Man hides cash in oven; cash gets baked by accident

One man probably has learned a costly lesson about where he hides his cash.

The unidentified man from Sydney, Australia, sold his car last weekend. The $15,000 (approximately $15,652 in U.S. dollars) in proceeds was earmarked for his mortgage payment and other bills, according to Australian media. Opting not to squirrel away the loot in a mattress or bury it in his backyard, he decided to hide it his oven, which rarely gets used.

Bad move: Turns out, his wife decided to use the oven that day, preheating it for chicken nuggets and, yes, cooked the cash.

"It was everything I had," he told the news station. "I've got nothing to my name. That money was supposed to go towards my mortgage."

His wife was equally distraught and, reportedly, could not stop crying when telling her husband after she discovered what happened: The cash was baked into a colorful burnt mess.

The man reached out to his lender and the Reserve Bank of Australia for help.

The Reserve Bank advises people to take damaged currency to a bank.

According to the Reserve Bank policy, "if several pieces of the same banknote are presented, the Reserve Bank's policy is for each piece to be worth a share of the value in proportion to its size... The combined value paid should be the face value of the original banknote."

In Australia, does the Darwin rule apply in Sydney, or does it only apply in Darwin?

I remember we once threw out $400 cash with the Christmas garbage. Realized what had happened the evening of trash day. :doh!:

Don't feel quite so bad about that now.

If you actually live in Darwin, all rules are distorted by the flux capacitor into an in-bred mutation of evolution.

Very good point. You would think only in Darwin. But in fact it does in all Australia since water flushes counter-clockwise.

Should have hid it in the banana stand. There's always money in the banana stand.

My wifes uncle hides money in coffee cans and buries them in his back yard.

On another note - anyone have a shovel I can borrow?

The guy is probably saying this, hoping that someone on an internet forum raises money for him.

He never had $15K.

No joke -- I have been hiding mortgage cash in my oven for months. I just had a lil work done on the building I'm restoring and it includes a hide away:D I feel for this man.

Speaking of which, I've got the bus rented. When are you guys going to show up and heckle me on it? I can use the money.

So does that cause Australian money to be worth ever so slightly more now that some of it has been destroyed?

Use a safety deposit box dude. I have two at different banks for my bankroll. I think this guy watched Limitless a few to many times.

Oh, good point. Since clocks actually spin backwards in Australia as well, that would mean Australian toilets turn Australian clock-wise, but counter U.S. clock-wise.

Just checking, considering your demonstrated propensity to believe incorrect things.
