Tom Brady split time and sat behind some big-name studs, and was not physically developed when he was drafted. No one knew he'd be such a beast, otherwise he wouldn't have went in the 6th round. However, the belief that Brady only got his shot because Bledsoe got hurt is a fallacy. According to reports (most often quoted is the Michael Holley book about that period of time), Belichick and the coaches had already taken note of Brady's abilities. His first season (2000), they carried four QBs because they were afraid they'd lose him if they tried to waive him to the PS. He sat around behind Brady, John Friesz, and Michael Bishop. By the time 2001 rolled around, he'd been promoted to backup. By the second game that year against the Jets, the coaching staff was already mumbling about possibly yanking Bledsoe in favor of Brady. Mo Lewis's blood-vessel-shearing hit accelerated the process, but Brady, IMO, would've risen to notice regardless.

Point being? Cassel had none of that. He literally was the best shit to stick to the wall in terms of being a Patriot backup.
