I am wondering if there is a way to record any of the football games to a flash drive that can then be played on a laptop later?

One of our posters is in the hospital again and he is likely going to miss all of the preseason games, he is in St.Louis at Barnes Jewish, so I am hoping to find a way to record or save the games from either my dish service or his cable service to a thumb/flash drive and send them to him where he can watch them on his laptop.
Thanks in advance.

you would have to save it to a computer, transcode to an avi or mpg4 file type, then drop it on the drive. doable, but not simple.

better to see if you can find a torrent of the game from someone, though that won't be easy for preseason.

Do you have a tuner in your PC?
If not, is getting one feasible. Priuce ranges from $50 for basic to $200 for multiple tuners.

wow so this is probably all going to be WAY over my head. transcode??? Don't know if I have a tuner...I have an HDMI port if that tells you anything....My laptop is a Dell Studio 1555 with 6 GB of RAM, the video card is a Radeon 5100, my processor is a Centrino Duo Core 2.80
If i need to purchase something I will.

Film it with a digital camera and put it on your computer then put it on a drive.

Depending on how good their internet connection is, you might be able to hook him up live with a slingbox.

Give me an address. I'll hook you up. No Chiefs fan left behind.

BUT it would be faster if he could just download it over the internet.

EDIT - I get the preseason games on tape delay (2-3 days usually) so this might not be a great option.

This is what I have and it lets me record HD content directly from my UVerse box.

Best solution has already been suggested, a TV tuner card. While I don't have one, I have researched the idea fully, and seems like it would be the cheapest, simplest solution.

Maybe a kind fellow Chiefs fan can make a torrent of the games. That would be the easiest way, if someone was willing to do it. Download it and put it on a flash drive. Watch.

Sorry I should say the best idea is a torrent. Problem is they are tough to find, quickly for preseason. Usually days late, and have to be on a private tracker to get them. Since the 1 person I know that uploads torrents regularly (thank you for that) has said he will be getting preseason on a delay of 2-3 days, tuner card is second best option.

Can you recommend any places that will be of good quality and speed with no viruses and so on?

I have a feeling I am going to show way to much of how far behind the times I am but, what is a torrent?

google bittorent

it's a file sharing protocol.

Basically, if you don't get a TV tuner, you wait for someone else WITH a PC TV tuner to record the game and save the file, then to put it up for sharing over the internet.

I could probably just hook you up with a lower quality direct download. That would be easiest.

But, again, there'd be a delay.

Okay cool by delay you mean the couple 2 or 3 days?

It's all up to the attentiveness of the person providing the file.

Yes. I don't get the game until it comes on NFL Network, which is 2 or 3 days after the actual game is on. Maybe one day, or live, depending on the NFL Network schedule. Not sure.

But it's pretty quick process to convert it and get it up for someone after that.

So then you will let me know where I can download it from?
Thanks for your patience with my being uneducated with this stuff.

I will probably get you a separate link just for your dude.

It won't be in HD though if that's OK. It'll be DVD resolution. I'll want to get it uploaded as fast as possible.

Yes it is a very nice gesture. I found out late last night that this all might be for not. Our member/my friend has taken a very severe turn for the worse.
