Dwayne Bowe plans to show up by Week One

Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe is the last unsigned franchise player. In theory, he can stay away until the Tuesday after Week 10.

But he most likely won’t.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Bowe plans to show before the regular season begins.

It’s not uncommon for franchise players to stay away until the days preceding the start of the regular season. Since the player isn’t under contract, he can’t be fined. And since the franchise level play doesn’t commence until the real games start, the player gets his full salary if he makes it back in time for the first regular-season game.

For Bowe, that’s $9.5 million for the year. Which translates to more than $558,000 per game.

Given that the deadline for doing a long-term deal has passed, there’s nothing Bowe can really get at this point — unless he’s looking for a promise that the Chiefs won’t use the tag on him again in 2013.

The real question is whether he’ll show up before the days leading up to the regular-season opener, given that the Chiefs have a new offensive coordinator. Bowe needs to have a big season in order to max out his value in 2013; taking the field unprepared will make that harder to accomplish.

I'm wondering now: Has there been a single comment, statement, press release, tweet, etc., from Bowe himself about this whole thing? Maybe I'm not paying attention, but I haven't seen it.

If Romeo is smart, he'll play Bowe as soon as possible. The players aren't stupid and they know that they need Bowe if they're going to make a run this year. Sitting Bowe will risk pissing the players/fans off...

The one thing I don't understand a whole lot of is the administrative side of the game like cap room, contracts/guaranteed money, hold outs/fines, rules/deadlines, etc., so maybe my .2 cents is just completely off base here but..

Wouldn't Bowe be hurting himself here in this case?

He states he won't miss any regular season games. Probably because he needs to get paid, and paid well. My thinking is that the 2 sides are/weren't anywhere near an agreed figure so they completely stale mated. I mean out of the entire offseason we've heard jack shit about this subject. Just the same ol' shit week after week, month after month. If Bowe knows Pioli isn't budging at this point, wouldn't it be in Bowe's best interest to sign his tender, come to camp and practice, learn the new system that allows him to be even more successful this season with the return of other players, then he can look for a bigger pay day next off season?

I mean at this point, what good is he going to do in week1 against the Falcons with 1 week of prep to learn a completely new system and contribute? He'll be benched most likely I would think or at the very least his touches/production would be so minimal he might as well not even play.

K so Baldwin is running and has been running the #1 routes in a new offense. Suddenly Bowse shows up for the 1st week of the season and what happens? I see nothing good of that situation for several weeks. Bowe has to learn the offense and get in game shape and Baldwin has to start learning the #2 routes which he had not been practicing during any OTA's or TC. Just what we need with a QB like Cassel...muscial fucking WR's in a new offense right at the beginning of the season.

Is he allowed to have a playbook while not under contract? Secondly what does this do to all the work Baldwin has put in at #1? Not to mention Breaston at #2? It just fucks with the whole chemistry the offense is building right now in camp. See, this is what no one wants to really talk about. All the work these guys have put in during OTA's and TC suddenly goes for not and they have to start playing at different positions that they have not been practicing. I understand this happens due to injuries and stuff but for it to be happening because of a hold out just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. If he is going to show up for week 1 under the current offer then just show up now and get on board with everyone else. It really starts to smack of selfishness if indeed he does show up under current offer.

Because he doesnt have too, he doesnt have to be out there practicing in that 100 degree heat. He can sit there in arizona where they usually go and practice in the AC in that damn practice facility they have. He's a veteran he knows how to run routes, he knows whats expected of him and what kind of shape he has to be in. Good grief.

Would it be better if he was there from day 1? Yes. Are these guys pros that will overcome this minor speedbump? Yes.

It's not ideal. Both sides acted in their own interest. At the end of the day they are all after the same goal, making money, best achieved by winning.

Just what we need with a QB like Cassel...muscial ****ing WR's in a new offense right at the beginning of the season.

Seriously???

There are only so many routes that a WR can run. They should all know how to run routes. That should not have to be taught to them at this point.
The playbook is not going to be much different. It is going to be the verbage that will be the biggest difference.
Bowe and Cassel have been playing together long enough that they already know each other.
If anything this should help the other receivers get reps that they need in case of an injury.

Right. If these guys are quality pros, this is a small hurdle compared to what all the NFL can throw at them.

It's not like Baldwin is going from playing RB to WR. He's not going to have to learn a new position. He just needs to know the plays from the perspective of either WR spot, which he probably needs to know anyway. If the coaches are doing their job, no one is going to be caught with their pants around their ankles when Bowe returns.

Yeah, it's the player's fault Bowe isn't getting what he wants. Look it, I want him on the field as much as anyone but I don't want it to **** everything up. If he is going to sign the franchise offer then just sign the ****er and get to camp so everyone can get on the same page BEFORE the games count. What a novel ****ing idea, I know.

Why is it that some of you are expecting more out of the player than you are out of a team?
This is a business where teams cut players reguardless of their contracts. Players do not owe us as fans or the team anything.
Of course we want them to be there and be the best they can but 90% of people would be doing the same thing.

This. Hell, here's a Bowe related example.

Bowe came to training camp late his rookie year. Practiced all camp to be the #2 receiver behind Kennison. Then Kennison was injured in week 1 and Bowe had to be the #1 Rec the rest of the year. It didn't take a rookie Bowe long to adjust so I doubt it would take Bowe too long now.

I guess you're missing my point. Right now, Casshole is developing chemistry with Baldwin running the #1 route. When Bowe returned, Baldwin will be running the #2 route in the same play and be in a different spot at a different time. The chemistry is lost. From your point of view, why don't everybody just skip all preseason activity to avoid injury and just show up in week one. There's no purpose in running routes and developing timing with the QB, they're all veterans, right?

Dude come on.

They run the same routes from both sides of the field in practice. So Cassel should have been throwing to Baldwin running whatever route on either side of the field. So Bowe coming back should not change their timing for any route from either side of the field.
The #1 WR doesn't just have a couple of routes, the #2 WR doesn't have just a couple of routes and so on.
They change the routes that each WR runs on each play depending on down and distance.

Next he tweeted the above photo. He claims that he is on a Delta flight bound for KC and that he is using the in-flight internet connection.

I think the from the facial hair on the upper lip (what you can see of it) the profile looks like it could be D-Bowe.

It would also make sense for Bowe to come to KC to sign his franchise tender today. The Chiefs are in town so Bowe can meet up with Pioli to ink the deal. He can also catch up with his teammates and possibly even make an appearance on the sideline for tonight’s game. Once it is all over, Bowe could go back to St. Joe with the Chiefs and get to work.

Showing up now would have gotten Bowe out of a couple of weeks of training camp but it will also give him a couple of weeks to practice and get ready for the season. None of this holdout has made sense in my view, but sitting out the entire offseason would have been a colossal mistake on Bowe’s part.

Then again, this guy could be full of it.
He hasn’t attempted to send out another picture, though he may try to get one after the plane lands. It doesn’t appear he is at a very favorable angle.
If it is Bowe and he is in town to sign his deal, we’ll likely find our soon anyway.
