Extended opportunity to Sept 14th. Please give. We're at $240 so far and this site can do much better.

In the past 2 months our site has lost two longtime members who were great people and contributed to this site over the years. Each of these men were in their 40's.

Currently, the Lounge is named for a man named Dan Edwards (aka CrazyHorse) who had fought lung disease for a very long time and finally succumbed to a second transplant which failed earlier this month.

Previously, Mike Hall (aka MadMax) died after a lengthy battle with liver disease on June 30th. We named the Lounge after MadMax for the entire month of July.

Several current members know these men in real life and some were even introduced to ChiefsPlanet by them.

We used to do nice things for people more frequently when the site was smaller and we haven't done anything like this for years. Dan was a Chiefs fan but spent enough time friendly trolling over at OrangeMane.com that they pooled their money and sent he and his wife on a vacation prior to his first lung transplant more than 4 years ago. We did nothing at that time.

I know there are some financial needs in both of these cases and these were extraordinary individuals who were taken far too early. Mike left a couple of minor children. Dan's son is grown.

We'd like to accept gifts which will be passed on to the families of these members who were taken tragically far too soon. Dan's family will utilize these funds to help pay for funeral expenses. Mike was a personal friend of FlopNuts and he will ensure that the money given for Mike will go directly towards the care of the children and/or their college fund. If you're unable or unwilling to give, please keep these families in your thoughts and prayers.

If you choose to send a gift via paypal, use the button below. l total the moneys collected and share those numbers on the 4th. Please specify how you would like your gift to be earmarked. If no instructions are specified, it will be split 50/50. Thanks for your generosity.

Personal checks can be mailed to me or I will provide an address via PM.

We will take contributions until Sept 4th. If you choose to send a gift, PM me for instructions. Personal checks will be collected centrally and then mailed to each respective party. We will also accept Paypal to my account and I will then mail a check once those funds have arrived. I will total the moneys collected and share those numbers on the 4th. Please specify how you would like your gift to be earmarked. If no instructions are specified, it will be split 50/50. Thanks for your generosity.

Not trying to cause trouble, but dont families usually set up official funds for donations when death occurs?

Donating money over the internet to strangers might scare alot of people off.

But other than that, classy move Phil.

I don't think they set up funds as often as you think. I understand the concern of donating money to strangers so it's a good thing I'm not a stranger. We've done something like this probably 10+ times over the years here, we've taken contributions for the site itself, and we used to run a charity on this site. Every single penny has always reached its destination. I'm not a rich man but I do value my experience on this site and my reputation more than the few hundred bucks this is likely to bring in.

PM me. I'll have a name and address for checks. I will facilitate paypal donations and write a check for what comes in. The personal checks will go straight to Mike's mother (who cares for the kids) and to Dan's wife.

Just members? Long time members who post regularly? Spouses? Parents? Children?

That's a good question. We have a lot of members. Obviously, not every death is going to mean we put up a solicitation like this.

You and your wallet decide where the line is. If neither of these guys inspired you and you don't feel compelled to throw down a few bucks then don't. I'm not going to spend my time organizing this each time a member of this site dies, obviously. But these two were particularly tragic, too soon, and there is a need for donations. I feel comfortable the money sent isn't going to be injected into somebody's arm or used for a trip to Vegas. Obviously, a guy like Logical would have qualified for something like this if there had been a need communicated. But we honor his memory in other ways because he was financially well off.

Holy shit, I want to go kick something after learning this. Every time something like this happens, I wonder why the good people have to go early.
I am going to miss Crazyhorse on here, and had truly wanted to meet him in person.
I wasn't aware of the MadMax passing either, will post again when I collect myself.

I've spoken with the kids grandmother who is raising them. She has no problem with people sending check donations to Phil or even directly to her personally. If you'd like to mail direct you can PM me for her name and address. 14 and 16 is awfully expensive for someone who's already done it in generations passed and didn't expect this to happen again. She has asked for nothing, but I know first hand it would be incredibly helpful. It's much appreciated but she wouldn't want anyone to take any mustard off their hotdog on her account so no one should stress themselves to do it.

I think setting a line where this step is taken is fraught with land mines. But, I think we can safely set the bar to at least long time members of the community in good standing.

I agree. I know we've done this several times over the years. One was strange in that a father/son duo in good standing here had their wife/mother become diagnosed terminal. They were open about how their homelife was suffering so we collected some money and sent some pizzas to lessen the load on the sick lady. Then we sent the rest to hire a cleaning crew to come out. That lady is still alive and kicking which is awesome but it left questions about the contribution. No, I'm not going to identify them. There's really nothing to be embarrassed about but my intention isn't to finger them at all.

Then there was another member collecting money for himself. We'll never allow that again.

Everyone who has someone depending on them, or for whom their passing would be a burden should obtain life insurance if they are eligible.

Sometimes you aren't eligible. Sometimes you are, and it's still not enough. Every little bit helps.

Funny you should mention it. Zach has never been to a Chiefs game. Grandma and his sister don't care about it so I'm planning on taking him to his first game this year. Things are a little tight right now but by the time I'm ready to go it shouldn't be. I've got that one covered. But that would've meant a lot to Mike so I appreciate you bringing it up.

Very classy move. I can attest that any small amount is helpful to the family at a time like this. I have been a CP member for a long time (and was lurking before that) and have seen many members come and go. I read much more than I post as you can tell from my low post count. I have never actually "met" any of the CP members despite being here for so long. However, I can say there is a feeling of family here.

Last year my mother lost her second battle with cancer. I took a significant break from posting then as I was handling most of her finances. Believe me that the bills add up quick and are a huge source of additional stress on those fighting for their lives and their families. We held a couple of benefits in an effort to try to help out. We were very grateful for ANYTHING that we received as we realized money was hard to come by.

I would encourage anyone/everyone to try to donate something.

In fact, your efforts as a mod to keep this place as an interesting diversion are priceless. Today is payday. Please consider sending a few bucks for these guys. I don't have any way of knowing how much has been sent directly to the families via check but the paypal totals thus far, while generous on the part of those who have participated, isn't really anything worth boasting about for the size of this site. You don't have to send $100. We've had some guys send $10 and $20. Those are just as important and add up quickly. Thanks.

I just wanted to say thank you, to everyone who contributed to Mike and his family, as well as Dan and his. I know times are really tough out there right now, and it seems like everyone is just trying to scratch out a roof over their heads and keep moving in the right direction. It means a lot that you took a little bit out of your family's mouth and put it into his. I have no idea what was collected, but I am appreciative of it greatly. I hope everyone who contributed gets it back tenfold, one way or the other. Thanks again.

Got a nice thank you note, it was unnecessary but nice, from Dan's (Crazyhorse) family. They were amazed a person could give to someone they havn't met. We're all one dysfunctional family in my eyes, we're Chiefs fans :p

I said I was going to close this on Sept 4th but we have $240 in the account. I was hoping to send at least $300 to each family. Let's see if we can do better.

My donation just got returned by PayPal (after a month) because "[Phobia] is not a Verified PayPal member."

I'm happy to re-send if you can point me in the right direction.
