These two by a wide margin. The "Miracle on Ice" had it all; underrated sports team, America vs Russia, underdogs that no one believed in, Olympic venue.

Buster Douglas because we all thought he was only there as a punching bag for Tyson

Yea and he was a 40-1 underdog. For me, this is thee biggest upset ever. That's what Tyson gets for undertraining and underestimating. And getting rid of Kevin Rooney didn't help him. He became easier to hit post-Rooney.

Had to be the Tyson/Douglas fight. Tyson was not only beating opponents but terrorizing them in the ring. I remember the school I worked at had a dance the night of the fight, so I taped it off the tv. I got home at around 2:30 am and rewound and played the tape, having no idea who won or lost. I ended up watching it twice before I believed what I saw had happened. Buster dismantled the dude, in his prime, that had been untouchable up to that point

Memorable, but sorta like a kick to the nuts, 1998 Big 12 championship game.

The line between winning and losing in the NFL is quite small.

I think in todays NFL you couldn't really call any sort of win one of the most memorable upsets in sports history. The teams are relatively evenly matched each year from the top of the league to the bottom compared to other levels or sports.

Even the Giants Patriots game...sure it was an upset but...I don't know thats just the NFL the Giants are good.

Boxing has felt like a sham as long as I have been alive. MMA UFC stuff is interesting. If it is on TV and there is nothing else I am interested in I will watch it. Those guys are warriors but the product inst always what it could be. Not the only sport with that problem obviously.

Agree completely, the NFL is really 'any given Sunday.' the middle third of the league is pretty much even and the top isn't too far ahead of them.

With the Giants and Patriots, people confuse a great game that ends in an upset as a great upset. The Giants were the NFC champion, they didn't suck. They weren't 14 point dogs. The best team lost to the second best team, that really isn't that shocking.

What do you [or |Zach], or well anyone] think of the effect of Spain's STYLE of dominance?

I really, really enjoy watching their interchangeability and their unwavering passing competence, but am still wistful thinking of the beautiful game of Brazil or the flash of the game with more individual offensive superstars.

For those less acquainted, Spain is straight crushing folks with a keep away style of play. They don't so much as stutter passes, let alone fumble them, so the game is this precision procession of crisp passes as they patiently wait for an offensive opening. Once they score, they are nearly impregnable on defense.

At times it looks like the Globetrotters working 'the weave' against the Generals on offense, then the Rodman era Pistons on D.

Seriously.

This is probably the most significant upset in sports history.

You'd be wrong.

Brazil?

****ING BRAZIL?

What else could we do?

Beat Germany as well?

It'd be like beating the classic Packers and 49'ers...

Brazil is amazing...a top team in the world but Spain's recent dominance is simply stunning. Right now Spain can look at Brazil and with a straight face say "get on my level".

Totally agree with all of this. There are not stunning upsets in the NFL. There are just really great games and that was one of them.

I get the idea of wanting the best of the best to play a certain whimsical style of the soccer you want to see at the top. They don't quite have that but they are amazing...and they are positive...and they do spread the ball the around.

I love that they play the game in good faith because if a negative style team were to have that kind of success it would be a crying shame. Watching Oranje in that WC Final was embarrassing.

I am much more well versed in our domestic league and the ins and outs of the MLS not that I don't follow international soccer closely.

With Spain its like...they are always where they need to be to pounce as soon as you give them that chance. They force you to make so many decisions...more than you would like and when you make the wrong one they smoke you.

I feel like Brazil has played some pretty uninspiring ball not really in the mold of their past but they are still damn good. WCQ is going its not gonna be long till the tourney starts again.

To me it was every year the Chiefs had home field advantage, 1st round bye & the 1st game was lost. I think there were a couple times in the last 3 decades?

Joe Cool getting his bell rung in that CG.

I'm sure there's other ones' that are more important to casual fans' but these are the only ones I remember without putting a lot of thought into it.

I guess I don't at all understand the criteria some of you are using. How could that be considered a huge upset?

Going into that game BUF was 5-1 but KC was 4-2.

To finish the season BUF was 13-3 KC was 10-6.

Two good teams...where is the upset?

I know most of you aren't soccer fans but, the 1992 European Cup had the greatest upset of all time. The European cup is second to the world cup as far as soccer events go so it's a bigtime tournament.

In 1992 Denmark failed to qualify for the tournament. The Soviet Union collapsed and could not field a team so Denmark was first in line to take their place. Denmark's second best player's son was in the hospital with leukemia. The dude scored like 7 goals in the tournament and Denmark won the whole thing and they weren't even supposed to be there!

It was amazing... There should be a movie...
