Smith revealed the fine today (http://blog.sfgate.com/49ers/2012/09/19/alex-smith-nearly-fined-15000-by-nfl-for-wearing-sf-giants-cap/), saying he was told the Giants cap is non-sponsored gear of a competing league, and as such is off-limits during the 90 minutes after each game. Note that this doesn't apply to regular, non-sports clothing.

-snip-

Because someone in the NFL offices has a sense of what constitutes bad PR, the fine was quickly rescinded. But Smith was warned that if he does it again, he'll be out $15,000 each time. Fourteen more games, plus playoffs, that'd be upwards $210,000. We don't think Smith will be repping his Giants fandom so openly.

Matt Cassel should be fined for wearing any Chiefs gear at all.

I was really confused until I realized that he wasn't wearing Eli's hat.

A competing league? ROFL

Man the NFL is really uptight sometimes.

That's really lame that he is supporting his local team and gets fined.

That was throwing me for a while, too. I couldn't figure out why he'd be wearing that.

It's odd to me that they would consider baseball to be a competing league, but don't mind the guys wearing college football gear. I'd think they compete more with the NCAA than with MLB on a pure financial basis.

So Deion Sanders and Bo Jackson were exempt?

I guess the rule is randomly enforced. Maybe the replacement refs are running the NFL Front Office.

I edited the thread title for clarity.
