The Chiefs should sign this guy immediately. He's a perfect 3-4 ILBer. Only 3 guys had higher grades in run defense.

In all seriousness, he is just a more talented version of Belcher with remedial coverage skills and off field issues.

So, yeah, he can take Belcher's job. Bring him in

The Bad Guy

I'd claim him and put him next to DJ. Guy is a 3-4 backer.

I don't care how much of a headcase he is.

Mr. Laz

wouldn't claiming him would force more of a cap on the raiders? :D

why not

I think he's a better fit in a 3-4 and he's more athletic than Belcher.

Even if we only keep him for the rest of the year

Another bonus if we claim him is the defense he was the leader of at Bama is nearly identical to ours.

Not going to happen.

The Chiefs would never actually get that lucky.

Oh wait, yeah this probably will happen and then the Chiefs won't put a claim in on him.

Then again, Scott did say he'd need 53 guys off the street in order to win 2 games, so maybe this would be part of his master plan.

Yeah, but that also means the back end is extremely high.

Look at Tyson Jackson's deal. Sure, the signing bonus was high, but so was the back end of the contract.

Claiming McClain will almost certainly cost more than he'd receive on the open market. We'd also be incredibly stupid not to do it.

He makes less than a million this year, about $4M next year, and just under $6M in 2014.

The guaranteed money has been paid, except for a $250,000 "workout bonus" each season.

No financial risk here.

Let's say we hypothetically switch to a 1-gap. Rolando pans out.

We need CB, FS or SS, DE (3-tech). It would be great if we could upgrade at Javier's position and get an ILB who can cover. I don't think Rolando is very good in coverage IIRC

I like to think I played a little part by linking him to an article by Bucky Brooks, the scout BlackBob proclaimed was the only one he'd listen to and the scout he said trashed Geno.

Those are LBs that a new HC and GM would love to have.

The Chiefs will never claim him. I think the Chiefs boycott defensive players that actually play with intensity and anger. I'd love to have a hard hitting asshole in the middle of our defense, even if he gets the occasional penalty for some hits.

Oh wait, yeah this probably will happen and then the Chiefs won't put a claim in on him.

Then again, Scott did say he'd need 53 guys off the street in order to win 2 games, so maybe this would be part of his master plan.

I think the guy plays his role well, but that he is a limited ceiling type guy that needs to do all the little things exceptionally to stick as a long term starter and hasn't really improved over 2010 and in some ways has regressed (like the rest of the team has)

Wait, people are now coming around to the notion that Belcher is mediocre at best and needs to be upgraded? Who could have known this? he is an average starter. It's not like he is terrible, he is just limited because of his measurables. It's not like defenses need stars at every position and his is probably the least important of all in this defense.

I think he is a good "banger" but that he has reached his ceiling in that role and that a player like Rolando is a clear upgrade because of his footmall acumen and size upgrade.

Rolando's got some fans. Bit of an immaturity problem, but possibly could grow up with a change of scenery. Big, strong, smart, but missing something that makes a complete adult. Hits like a freight train when he feels like it. Gave up on Oaktown which is why his playing time was reduced. Look at him whiff on 3rd &1 (20 second mark): http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/0ap2000000100437/Raiders-vs-Bengals-highlights Doubt that he could make the KC defense any worse.... might actually make it better. Agree entirely. He isn't going to make this defense worse. Worst case scenario, he provides an upgrade as a 1/2-down run defender who brings some hits/blows up blockers for DJ. He's more athletic, stronger and quicker IMO than becher with better instincts and is better in coverage, specifically in recognition and coming up from hs drops to make plays. Absolutely struggles in man coverage but I don't think e'd be asked to do that here. I'm not advocating we play him like Bowman and have him in on all our passing subs, but he'd definitely be a positive addition in our base front IMO.

That $4M base salary next year IS huge, in terms of leverage. He needs the Chiefs even less than they need him.

If he reports, they're going to use him for 5 games and either cut him or force him to take a pay cut. Either way, he's not getting paid $4M next year.

Bay Area news speculating that Raiders are trying to suspend him the last 4 games of the year in an effort to try to trade him in the offseason for a low round pick.

If they played in Denver they could go about it that way with Goodells blessing.

He might just be real frustrated at his situation right now. If he plays for another team, maybe he will care. I know I'd try him on this Chiefs team.

They're horrible because they give up 400 yards rushing a game while McClain is playing

Lets not get al stupid and pull another garbage Raider player like we did with Boss and Routt

Theres talk around the league that this 2012 Chiefs team might be the worst team in the history of the NFL

I find it funny that with the Routt, Boss, Winston signing we had the best off season any team and we were a SB contender and we are looking at our plate with just 2 wins-

This goes to show you that FA's doesnt mean crap... neither does the nfl draft..

Every year it's the same old song and dance on this board... "11-5, AFC West Champs!, our defense will be top 3... gonna smoke the Broncos and Raidrs....!!"

Last time we won anything of worth people were still dying of polio

30 years of complete dogsh*t.. and it never gets better... it continues to get worse... this team is the laughing punching bag of the NFL.. hell even the Cardinals went to the SB a couple years back.. we cant even win a playoff game.....

Worst team in the NFL

it wont be the worst team next year, maybe from 2 to 3 wins this season to 5 or 6 next. A rookie QB will get us a couple more wins. The positional talent on this team is still god awful besides like 4 or 5 guys.

and now there are bigger holes than ever thanks to the GM. (starting CB, MLBer, FS etc)

The NFL Today: Rolando McClain suspension could portend release

By Jason La Canfora | CBS Sports NFL Insider
December 9, 2012 11:57 am ET

Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain, a 2010 first-round pick, is completing his two-game, team-issued suspension on Sunday and is eligible to return to the club on Monday. However, this suspension could well be the first step to releasing the former eighth overall pick, whom sources confirmed was sent away from the team after engaging in a very loud and volatile argument with coach Dennis Allen a few weeks back, during the individual portion of practice. McClain has not practiced with the team since.

The former Alabama star is no stranger to off-field issues as well, including a December 2011 arrest for assault. Several current and former teammates say privately McClain is a difficult individual to play with and be around at times. McClain is due another $3.6 million in guaranteed money between 2013 and 2014, the remaining years on his deal. But per the language in his contract, the suspension means the Raiders can void the remainder of guaranteed money still owed to him and release him without penalty. Should McClain appeal, the NFLPA would have to make the case that his actions did not amount to "conduct detrimental to the team" in order to recoup that money.

McClain has already pocketed roughly $20 million from the Raiders.

Oakland could be looking at major changes this offseason, with veterans like Carson Palmer and Richard Seymour possibly done there and oft-injured Darren McFadden entering the final year of his deal. Owner Mark Davis has expressed public dissatisfaction with the team's progress in 2012 under the first-year coach Allen and general manager Reggie McKenzie.

A large part of McKenzie's job this year was the restoration of order to the team's cap situation, purging bloated contracts and trying to prepare the club for the future. It remains to be seen if McClain will be a part of that purge, though the events of recent weeks would make it much easier now to get out of that deal without major financial ramifications.
