A continuance of the Top 5 Rock Bands thread.

Mine are (no in order);

Guns N Roses - Appetite for Destruction
AC/CD - Back in Black
Metallica - Ride the Lightning
The Eagles - The Long Run
Van Halen - 1

I couldn't pick just one Rolling Stones album and I thought Hot Rocks was a cop out so I didn't include it.

I listen to everything on random now so don't really listen to "albums" any more. I guess I'll list the favorite album by each of the bands I listed on the other thread.

Pink Floyd,
Led Zeppelin,
The Cure,
Thin White Rope
Front Line Assembly

1. Toss up between Wish You Were Here and The Wall
2. Used to be Presence but is probably Houses of the Holy now.
3. Easy - Faith
4. Moonhead
5. Gashed Senses & Crossfire

Alice Cooper- Welcome To My Nightmare
Kiss- Alive
Marilyn Manson- Golden Age of Grotesque
Pearl Jam- Ten
Gin Blossoms- New Miserable Experience

HUGE Alice Cooper fan, LOVE WTMN ('Cold Ethyl' has some SICK guitar work) grew up in that shit. My faves are the early stuff - Pretties For You, Love It to Death, Killer, and Billion Dollar Babies - Dennis Dunaway = SICK freaking bassist.

As for Manson, I'm down with The New Shit, (s)Ain't, and mObscene from GAoG, but I mean, Antichrist Superstar and Mechanical Animals are so much more realized and more epic, and to me, it seems that those two albums have a depth that truly regards them as 'classic', wouldn't you agree??

Just found it odd that you would pick that particular one; I think that Antichrist Superstar was the apex of that whole industrial/goth-metal thing. And Mechanical Animals is like MM's 'Tusk' or 'Tunnel Of Love', insofar as they couldn't do their biggest record over; it had to be completely different. And that one, MA, was genius.

I just picked up Mechanical Animals on vinyl - 2 discs, one is 'Alpha' and the other 'Omēga', with the original tracklisting. My turntable LOVES it, haha!!

Alice is probably my favorite rock artist of all time although Kiss is very close. Saw him live for the first time on Fathers Day this year.

I love everything I've heard from MM but I don't have all his albums including Anti-Christ Superstar so I can't speak to that one. I've heard some of it. I mis spoke naming GAoG. I meant Holy Wood. That was the first Manson album I bought and I probably have some extra affinity to it for that reason... however I do completely love it. I like that it's more raw than a lot of his other stuff including Mechanical Animals. I like that one too I just prefer the more raw sound over the more produced. I think Eat Me Drink Me is fantastic too.

get Antichrist Superstar and Portrait of An American Family - easily the most 'raw' and 'industrial' of his entire catalog. If you like Holy Wood, you will LOVE Antichrist.

Also, I can send you mp3s of the Pre-Reznor mixes of Portait - probably the most raw Manson you'll ever hear. PM me your email.

Mechanical Animals might be my favorite; it has grown on me to the point where I consider it an 'essential' album. It's like a David Bowie/Thin White Duke for the new frontier or somesuchshit. It's ahead of its time, at least for me; I bought ot the day it came out and I'm just now starting to catch up to it.

or even the Illusions. I mean, I have the record, and some of it sounds like the Dracula stuff in Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

Dude's a bug Buckethead fan, and he's pretty wizard-y with the guitar. I saw him do the nun-chucks solo, shit's crazy. But it's more 'shredd-y' guitar than the bluesy guitars of Izzy and Slash. I prefer Izzy and Slash.

Would prefer the original GN'R, but can't shit on the new line-up, either. Liked Brain better than Farrer, but DJ Ashba is a badass, so...it's apples and oranges, ya know?? Some people dig it...

At the end of the day, The only 'shredder'-type guitarists I'm into would be like, Van Halen, Dimebag, Al DiMeola, etc.

Buckethead has some beautiful songs that arn't about shredding he can play real emotional ballads. He plays great funk & has stuff with Bootsy Collins and Snoop Dog he is very diverse musician. Buckethead > Slash & Slash has been my favorite for a long time I just recognize a superior guitarist. Now I think Slash is over rated and he doesn't put forth the effort to push himself. He has drop off from his days in GnR & they all try to hold on to that fame with the band recognition and Slash and Duff arn't in it.

The RRHF was a joke they sold out & Axl didn't want any part of it.

It is a greatest hits but it's live. I know... very small gray area. If you noticed I kind of backed off my "no greatest hits" stance earlier. I shouldn't have included Alive if someone else shouldn't include greatest hit but that's not defined here.

Rock and Roll over is good, I agree. As far as my favorite album cover I have to go with Dressed To Kill.

Maybe just a little.

Maybe I also like Broken, but I couldn't put that in the list because it was too short of an album.

Awesome...NIN is my all-time favorite band. Have seen them live 6 times...1 of the 6 was up front at Lollapalooza 2009. Nobody does it like Rez. What's also cool about Reznor is that he has good taste in music with other artists...whenever I see a list of shit he is into or hear an interview of him giving some band props, I immediately check out the band and they are almost always awesome. I wasn't quite able to get into Throbbing Gristle...not sure what their even about, but the rest of his recommendations are superb. I was hooked from the first time I heard the song, "Burn" on an MTV commercial when I was 11 years old.

Not gonna argue with any of that.

I have a Col. Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains show from '06 that is stellar.

I'm an Izzy guy anyway - his albums are fucking GREAT.

I included Kiss "Alive" on my list. I'm just one who can't see a greatest hits album as something new or fresh in any way so to me they shouldn't count. There's no concept behind them other than making money. JMO. It wasn't defined that way in the OP so I guess anything is fair game.

How about when they stick 1 or 2 new songs onto the latest greatest hits package? That's a great move for fans. Not as big of a deal in the iTunes era, but I always hated that they made me buy a whole CD of songs I already had just to get the 1 or 2 new ones.

I'm going to do a semi-spinoff of this thread, was listening to Boneyard on sirius the other day and heard about their contest where you win a chance to pick a five song block and wondered what i would play.

If it's a compilation that has alternate live tracks or outtakes, alternate versions, something where you can go 'I'm picking this because it has the live version of 'blah blah' and the single mix of 'woof woof'' or whatever, ya know??

But yeah, Greatest Hits are probably a cop-out.

I like Burn too. It used to be my deadlift song back in college. Isn't 11 a little young to be raging out to a song like Burn?

Lol, yes I was too young for that shit, but I always had a way of working around my parents. I saw a short clip of NIN performing "Burn" on MTV one day and all that I heard from the voice-over was that it was a band called Nine Inch Nails. From that point on, I was bound and determined to purchase the CD that had that song on it. At school the next day, I asked all of my friends at school about this band that I saw on an MTV clip called Nine Inch Nails and they were singing a song called "burn." I was hoping that one of them would be able to purchase the album from one of their older brothers or something. I asked them if they knew what I was talking about. Nobody did. I then began asking people who weren't my friends and finally stumbled upon some luck with a Dungeons and Dragons/Magic freak who was notorious for growing his fingernails out and sharpening them so he could use them as "weapons" if anyone tried beating him up. Not only did he know what band I was talking about, but he also knew some random facts about them, although he had never heard the song, "burn" nor did he know what album it was on. He told me that he believed the band got it's name from the length of the nails that pounded Jesus's hands to the cross being nine inches. A light bulb came on in my head almost immediately. My parents were Bible-thumpers. I was going to tell them about this new Christian band that I heard from one of my friends called Nine Inch Nails who's name was inspired by the nails which pounded Jesus's hands into the cross. I was going to ask them to buy the CD for me the next time we were at the mall together. And sure enough, the next time I was at the music store in the mall with my parents, I found one of their CD's (The Downward Spiral) and asked them to buy it for me like they promised. My mom said, "sure," and didn't bother to look at the CD or some of the names of their songs with questionable titles such as, "heresy," "Mr. Self Destruct," "march of the pigs," "ruiner," "big man with a gun," etc. I covered the "parent advisory" label with my thumb and while the clerk was ringing it up, my mom was pre-occupied by some (presumably) Trisha Yearwood CD's. Parents.....suckers. Rico.....score. Although I was a bit pissed because I couldn't find the song, "burn" on any of their albums. It took me years to discover that song was on the Natural Born Killers soundtrack...I was starting to think that I either imagined the song or perceived as something that it wasn't. I was happy with The Downward Spiral album though and proceeded to scheme ways to get my hands on Broken and Pretty Hate Machine and succeeded admirably. :thumb:

I was pleasantly suprised to see The Black Crowes on a few lists. Very underrated group with so much talent and versatility. Was saddened the Robinson bros couldn't work out their shit and keep it going. Only release of theirs I didn't like was Lions. I really love Powerage, For Those About To Rock (We salute you), Highway to Hell and High Voltage from AC/DC.
I miss Layne Staley. Going to see Sabbath next month - saw them last year and Ozzy was better than on some of his recent solo efforts. Geezer and Tony are still great.
Not really interested in a Gn'R reunion if they don't bring the originals back (Izzy, Steven).

Siouxsie and the Banshees

-the Singles(1981)
yes,it counts. I didnt know anything about the Band or the music/subculture except for a couple songs on alternative L.A. radio stations between 83'-86'. I got this and listened to it many times and it lead to going to goth clubs in LA for 3 years, seeing bands like Janes Addiction up close every weekend. I saw Siouxsie and the Banshees 3 times.

Janes Addiction-
1st album, live recording, produced by triple X records...I was one of those people that knew about this band a year before any of you did...2 years ago I found out a good friend was the brother in law of Dean Naleway. One of the Triple X producers/founders who did the lighting for Jane's on tour.

Clash
-London Calling..the Led Zeppelin of the punk set

Roxy Music-Avalon
..yes,it belongs. Siouxsie, Adam and the Ants, all the punk bands in England went to their Gigs but of course their early stuff at the time was more experimental and artsy.

Sigue Sigue Sputnik-Flaunt it
LOL it doesnt really belong and I could interchange it with the Sex Pistols or the Dead Kennedy's or the Jam or something. But I enjoy pulling this out to shock people if they didnt know who they were or remind them if they did. I like it but not in the same way I like a Clash or Siouxsie album lol

I'm glad Appetite For Destruction is well represented in this thread because rumor has it fans are going get their wish. Slash and Axl on the same stage again. GNFR will return for a tour in 2016.

I know DJ Ashba has left the band and I wish he would have stayed but this is pretty much what fans want is the original lineup. I hope Bumblefoot is still a member he kicks ass.

Rock isn't usually my thing but here mine. No particular order AFTER Sublime

1) Sublime 40 oz to Freedom
Mad Season
311- Music
Alter Bridge - Blackbird
Blind Melon - Soup
Black Crowes - Southern Harmony...

Yeah I know it's 6 but couldn't leave any off of it. With a very close runner up Candlebox - Into the Sun. Easily their best album in my mind.

Because the standard list of:

Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon"
The Beatles "Sgt. Peppers"
Rolling Stones "Exile on Main Street"
Bob Dylan's "Blonde on Blonde"
Led Zeppelin "I through IV"
Radiohead's "OK Computer"
The Who's "Who's Next"

is just that - standard. We all know that those are magnificent albums. Also, all Smith and Cure and Tool albums are excluded based on the fact that they are generally regarded as awesome by just about everyone.

However, I'd like to provide Sac's "Deep Cuts" Version of the five best rock 'n roll records of all time:

1. The Modern Lovers - "The Modern Lovers"
- The best pure rock and roll album ever. Simple, raw and encompasses the purity of why you start a band in the first place - to get laid. It's insanely hip, intelligent, timeless and everytime I listen to it, it makes me want to get drunk as shit and pick up chicks. If I had a band, whether it was a country, metal, jazz, rock or whatever genre, I would cover at least four songs off this album. Recorded in 1971 and released in 1976. It's amazing that this album even exists as the band broke up, and Richman basically refused to do his earlier works and wanted the original recordings destroyed.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/8KB_YzJH0Bk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

2. Nick Drake - "Pink Moon"
- The absolute quintessential singer/songwriter album. Every song just absolutely tears your guts out from an emotional perspective. Absolutely tortured poet soul who was light years beyond his contemporaries, I consider Drake and his Pink Moon as the musical equivalent of Melville's "Moby Dick." It sold only 5,000 copies when it was released in 1972, but has gone on to influence countless artists.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/3sQv04CFSdE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

3. Prefab Sprout - "Two Wheels Good" (Steve McQueen)
- The absolute pinnacle of the '80's new wave sound. Brilliant musicianship, songwriting and production (produced by Thomas Dolby). It's rich and silky and emotionally deep with Paddy McAloon's amazing songwriting and vocals just making every track an absolute pleasure. 1985 was one of the greatest years in music ever.

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/dlFyqniT34U" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

4. My Bloody Valentine - "Loveless"
- There's been a couple of occurances where I put on an album and the roof of my head has completely blown off. This is one. The massive wall of sound of guitar and synth driven distortion perfectly integrated with lush, shoegaze vocals results in one of the most amazing musical listening experiences I've ever had. Released in 1991, it was the second album by My Bloody Valentine and the last until 22 years later when they released "mbv" in 2013.

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/OrMjc4oz0mY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

5. Danzig - "Danzig II - Lucifuge"

I think it's fucking brilliant. Schlocky, chuggy metal coupled with some of the most amazing vocals ever heard. And I honestly can't stand anything else put out by Glenn. Don't like the Misfits and the rest of the Danzig albums suck. This one is insane though. Blues, good old Rock n' Roll and metal fused together perfectly in this 1990 release.

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ETZLhBwlSSk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Other considerations:
KMFDM "Angst"
Los Lobos "Kiko"
White Zombie "Astro Creep 2000"
The BoDeans "Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams"
The Cult "Love"
Steve Earl "I Feel Alright"

My "popular" picks:

1. Aerosmith "Toys in the Attic"
- Walk this Way, Sweet Emotion, title cut, etc. Really a phenomenal album front to back.
And it spawned a classic CP thread. Aerosmith at their absolute best.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Q9NAerwlYWw?list=PLG60CR__0a0WjS51q7eUlOEXHBBE5WwBm" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

2. Black Sabbath "Paranoid"
- The best four songs to start an album, any album, in the history of music. I had this album when I was in sixth grade and I was scared to listen to it. Too much heavy, too much dark, too much. However, when I was in my early 30's, I was driving home from work and War Pigs came on and I had this revelation, an epiphany. The heavens opened and I realized how remarkable this album was. Gives me goosebumps when I listen to it.

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/_n62agh6Zfw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

3. Boston "Boston"
- Masterpiece of music. Innovative, both in structure and production and recording. Utilized a number of handmade projects of founder Tom Scholtz, such as the Rockman, that influenced some of the greatest albums in rock history. Vocals were insane and everything works to perfection. Every song is an absolute classic.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/pQihHtiPFLs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

4. Bee Gees "Saturday Nigh Fever Soundtrack"
- The Gibb brothers, along with friends, created one of, if not the most memorable and greatest movie soundtrack albums in history. Right from the opening note, you know this is some special shit.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/upreJjwag0g" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

5. Michael Jackson "Thriller"
- Another near greatest hits album from one of the truly great artists at his creative peak. Eddie Van Halen, Paul McCartney make guest appearances. Genius.

Just because you can dance to it and you aren't a stripper doesn't mean it's not rock and roll.

Bee Gees are just as much rock and roll as Opeth is - just because one is heavy and one isn't doesn't mean it's not rock. Hell, you could argue that the Bee Gees are substantially more similar to the roots of rock and roll than even a band like the Who, let alone the vast majority of metal bands.

Rock and Roll is a very large and encompassing classification.

Michael Jackson? He was the biggest game changer since Chuck Berry.

The Beatles were probably a bigger game changer on more levels than Chuck Berry. Chuck was the catalyst...but a bunch of those early 50s Chess sides were written by Johnnie Johnson anyway. Chuck took a lot of credit, and he was a badass, no doubt...

But Chuck influenced the real game changers (The Beatles and Stones). The Beatles have sold 10 million copies of the White Album ALONE. Does Chuck have 10 million album sales, total??
I know London Sessions went Gold...

With all due respect, and I know they were influenced by Chuck (who wasnt?)
But by all accounts, by 1960 Chuck was in jail, Buddy Holly and Eddie Cochran were dead, and Elvis was in the Army. It was 'How Much is the Doggie in the Window' and Doris Day and Shit like that.

We have the Beatles and Stones to thank for bringing Blues, R&B, and Chuck Berry back to America and introducing that music to a generation that was not buying Chess or Sun Records until maybe after they read the credits to the Beatles and Stones records they picked up at the local Woolworths.

Look at the early Stones albums - Jimmy Reed, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Howlin Wolf, Chuck, Chuck, and more Chuck.

If it weren't for the Beatles, Dylan may not have went electric. Hendrix, all that came after...Micheal Jackson doesn't even compare to the Beatles. He was just a game changer in the unit shifter way. He may have changed the way the business worked at the time, and he was a gifted singer who had a great sense of melody and timing. I had Thriller when I was a kid. It was great. When I was a kid. But I'll never actually put on a MJ record today. It's well produced and all, but...if I want to go back to that Era and style, Prince had 2 albums right around that time that shit all over anything MJ did after he left Motown.

If MJ influenced anything, he influenced the vacant, soulless pop dreck that the likes of Justin Timberlame and the guy who was with the Chili Peppers at the Super Bowl whose name I forget but whose music was way better when it was called 'The Police'. You know who I'm talking about. It's like 2 one syllable words or something. Bruno or something. He's terrible. I can hear (and see) some MJ in that guy.

So I guess MJ was a "game changer" of sorts...but not in a really good way, as far as I can tell. MJ created the likes of Lady Gaga. Someone else who everyone goes out of their way to convince people how good she actually is...and I'm like, 'nope. I've got too many other records to listen to.'

Plus, MJ liked to get his Jared Fogel on. **** that shit. And I know, so did Jimmy Page and Don Henley and Ted Nugent...but somehow, 16 hear old girls are different than 8 year old boys, Dude.

He was a pederast.

8 year olds, Dude.
