Technically, vBulletin called them "visitor messages." They were the little posts you could write on someone's "wall" publicly. They were useless and now are gone.

I usually stop by real quick, look and see if there are any vm alerts in the top right corner, do a quick scan of the front page and then bounce. No wonder I haven't got any replies to my vms the last week or so...
