ESPN announcer: Angel Rodriguez has 'Puerto Rican temper'

Angel Rodriguez has endured racially insensitive remarks before. The Kansas State point guard and Puerto Rico native put up with chants of "Where's your green card?" from the Southern Miss band last season.

During the second half of Saturday's game between Kansas State and Florida, Rodriguez picked up his third foul on a contested play. ESPN announcer Mitch Holthus and analyst Fran Fraschilla then discussed the merit of the foul.

But Holthus concluded the sequence by saying, "That's sometimes where the Puerto Rican temper kicks in there. They need him on the floor instead of picking up a third foul."

It's unclear what prompted such a comment. But in cases like this, intent is irrelevant. Whether Holthus knew it or not, he was tapping into an offensive stereotype.

And it's another bad look for ESPN, which just dealt with the fallout of Rob Parker's comments on RGIII. The two remarks don't mirror each other, but how can Holthus be so out of touch after watching Parker be lambasted?

I was always surprised he didn't get more of a backlash from the centaur population when Larry Johnson played for the Chiefs.

Not defending him by any stretch, I mean " put the hammer down" is like fingernails on a chalkboard, but is it possible he said "the Puerto Rican's temper" as a way of acknowledging Angel's heritage and not as a generalization? Had the sound down and Christmas music up so I can't say....

Mitch Holthus has embraced the Chiefs 2-14 or bust mentality himself. Good for him.

This is the most united from top to bottom towards a common goal I think I've ever seen this team.

I don't understand the big deal. I've heard the same descriptors applied to Rosie Perez. Why are sportscasters all the sudden held to a higher standard? I don't think this is going to blow up much at all.

Listened to the game and it gave me a short pause, but clearly wasn't meant to be offensive. Much ado about nothing methinks.

Agreed. My brother is married to a proudly Italian woman. He even has a shirt that says Help me, my wife is Italian. It's the same type of thing, its a reputation for being hot blooded. Shit, most Puerto Ricans would probably agree...

We want everyone to 'feel good' about them selves and have a positve 'self-esteem'.

Hey-some times you lose, sometimes you are a loser.

We need to teach kids and others how to handle not winning instead of how to feel.

As for the Holtus thing-it will blow over.

(as for me, I'm not going to get mad at Mitch for this. But I'm also not going to think someone is a "pussy" for being upset for feeling that his comments work to distill a historically underrepresented and un-voiced community down to a cartoon of a sterotype)

I just don't know how these announcers can talk for hours without insulting somebody. Most of these guys - like this one - say things that are absolutely true and nothing different than others would say. And yet they get in trouble.

I was a manager for Warner Brothers Studio Stores at Pier 39 in San Fran back in 1995.

We had the Japanese consulate calling for a boycott of WB because one of the Bugs Bunny cartoons was called "Bugs Nips the Nips". I got the pleasure of escorting the media out of the store and the always appropriate "No Comment".

We did, however, pull all the videos from the stores. :(

I used to like Mitch Holthaus but lately he is sounding more and more like a douchebag and I think the main reason is that he is worn out trying to tell a good story about the Chiefs as they toil in misery. He is a homer and paid to pump up a positive story on every loss.
