By SAM MELLINGER
The Kansas City Star

The short man with the stern look and pressed suits is not messing around. He will not waste time. Enough. No more clinging to the background or letting other people make the biggest decisions with his family’s Kansas City institution.

Clark Hunt has lived his entire 47 years in and around the Chiefs organization, and today he is in control of it like never before. His grasp is tighter than ever, his fingerprints in places he used to entrust to others. The worst Chiefs season in franchise is history is less than a week in the past, and Hunt appears to be giving his best effort to rebrand this thing back to respectability.

Absentee owner? Hunt’s got your absentee right here.

Hunt’s power grab means the Chiefs are a different franchise. The stark differences between him and his beloved father are coming into focus. Clark is quiet but ambitious. Respectful but ruthless. Flexible on details but intolerant of failure.

Lamar was a golf cart and a smile and enduring loyalty, known for driving himself around town and personally selling tickets. Clark is a black SUV and a direct question, a calculating man who in four years has pushed out his father’s co-pilot and neutered his own top football deputy.

Look, none of us know for certain whether Andy Reid will rise or sink if he’s the Chiefs’ new head coach. There are no guarantees in the NFL. Maybe you think Reid is a tired retread coach who could use a year off after being fired in Philadelphia. I happen to think he’s a proven coach and innovative offensive mind, a good fit for what the Chiefs need even as there are legitimate reasons to wonder whether he’s ready for another job so soon.

Maybe you wanted a push for Chip Kelly.

Maybe Mike McCoy intrigued me.

But whatever we think of Reid’s bona fides, we can all see what Hunt has done since Sunday’s appropriately limp, season-ending blowout loss at Denver: fired a failed coach, publicly emasculated a failed general manager, made clear a new power structure, identified the new coach he wanted, flew in for a meeting that effectively canceled other teams’ meetings and appeared on the verge of making the first hire of a seven-coach NFL offseason.

In Reid, he has settled upon a respected football mind, a classy man who quietly suffered awful personal tragedies and was put on public notice by his owner before last season but still wished the franchise well after being fired.

Reid had just three losing seasons in 14, and his teams ranked near the top in scoring offense and defense more often than not. He is a lover of both the screen pass and the long pass, a reputed hater of the running play who nonetheless gave his star back the ball more often than all but four other NFL rushers over the last two seasons.

Reid is also a proven evaluator of talent who made critical recent personnel mistakes that helped lead to his firing. The Eagles sent more players to the Pro Bowl than any other franchise during Reid’s time in Philadelphia, but his demise is directly traced by many to a free-agency binge that produced spicy headlines but just 12 wins the last two years.

Instant judgments of coaching hires are typically made with fewer facts than feel, initial speculation that turns into a lasting narrative of how a man is viewed. Along with the owner and quarterback, the head coach is one of the three most important positions in the Chiefs’ new power structure. But he is probably not as critical as it feels at the moment.

Reid could be the new face of the Chiefs, but no head coach goes it alone. Even if he has final say on staff and personnel, he’ll need help. Smart people willing to push back along the way. Obviously, he will need a better quarterback. Wide receivers, too. An upgraded offensive line. A better second cornerback opposite Brandon Flowers. You know the list.

But Reid would be the central beginning of a franchise reboot. He’d be here because the boss is fed up with losing. Starting now, Reid would be the Chiefs’ voice, the guy on the sidelines and in the news conferences. But his would-be boss is the muscle, shaping the Chiefs into something entirely new.

This is Hunt’s franchise, now more than ever before. He is remaking the Chiefs into something they’ve never been. That’s the change that makes this a historical week. Good or bad, we will soon see the results.

I've felt pretty meh about Reid the whole time. Another longest tenured coach who never won the big one... aka Marty. But that article explained a few things I wasn't aware of.

10 of the last 15 Super Bowls have been won by guys in their 2nd job. Reid is actually a pretty good choice.

Holy ****ING shit.

There are 5 Chiefs in the Pro Bowl this year.

All the proof you need to show that Pro Bowls mean jack.

those 5 Chiefs in the Pro Bowl was probably an attractive reason Reid wants to come here

he can build around said 5 and with those 5 (to 7) can become instantly competitive in year 1. That's all you can ask for. Those 5 are certainly better than Arizona's top 5 players. Though Arizona definitely has better depth roster wise, but worse FO structure (haha their owner sucks)

"Pursuit" of someone is putting a stamp on the franchise? Kind of a low bar to clear.

Yeah, not a week out and he still hasn't fired Pioli and supposedly still HAS him involved in scaring away talent by letting Pioli in meetings about the new people!

As for being an absentee owner, Sam, if you're going to drop the "less than a week" bullshit, then keep with it, one week of improved "team" focus doesn't make you a resident and passionate owner either. Especially when any number of other teams HAVE fired their under-performing GMs and Clark's still thinking...

Dick Vermeil lost a Super Bowl with the Eagles. In his next job, he won a SB.
Andy Reid lost a Super Bowl with the Eagles. In his next job...:hmmm:

Also, no one named "Andy" has ever coached a Super Bowl winner, so an Andy is due.

This is a lock.

Stop sucking Clark's dick. That will only happen once we win a playoff game. And how sad is it that Clark will be anointed savior if we win one fucking playoff game!? A fucking playoff game! Most teams in this league shoot for a Super Bowl....we shoot for one playoff win every 20 years.

Save it until this franchise actually proves it's worth.

While it seems hopeful, there is a chance that D-Cromartie ends up as our #2 if the Eagles decide he isn't worth his salary (I don't think he's a URFA, can't recall).

Mellinger is a bigger flip flopper than half this board. His first story after the press conference was all whiney bitchy basically trying to say why would change work if the last 4 haven't, that is GREAT logic. Dude is a shitty journalist. Funny to see him hanging from Clark's balls now.

If Andy Reid is hired, who cares about Pioli? We know he's way down the chain of command. He can't hurt us anymore.

As for Chunt.... To say this is one week and that he's done nothing is just plain wrong. In one week, he took everything away from Pioli, and said he's going to do it better. And of any team, our owner is pretty much putting clown shoes on other teams' owners and GMs. So I'd say he's done quite a bit.

Now... lovefest aside, what remains to be seen is Clark is committed to winning Super Bowls, or if his goal is to start getting butts in the seat again. I don't know the answer to that. If Reid gets this team to the playoffs every year, restores the roar at Arrowhead, but never wins a Super Bowl or comes close... I still think he'll be here 10 years.

Flip flopper?

Much like many of us, he's been saying he'd like to see certain types of change.

Clark went out and MADE CHANGES.

That's not flip flopping, it's called being partially satisfied.

Wrong. I have stated all along Clark wasn't the issue from day 1. He hired the best GM available and paid him well. He was trying to win and to do the right thing and it backfired.

He came out end of season and fired RAC and neutered Pioli and said he was taking charge. People bitched. I didn't. I backed the guy and preached patience.

It has worked out. I am proud to have backed Clark, he hasn't done a thing wrong since taking over except hiring a guy most thought was the right guy. When it was wrong he did what Pioli wouldn't do, he corrected the mistake.

Sorry not everyone has flip flopped on Clark. I am a Clark OG and I am proud. You wanna be OG's can just deal with it.
