Based on their career to date.

What I draw from this is that the league is pretty good about identifying the best quarterback available, whether that person is good or not. It also tells me that our new 1st round quarterback will be our starter for at least five seasons, so let's hope he's great.

1st line - Year - Best QB Drafted That Year - Pick among QBs in Draft - Round/Pick -
2nd line - Total Career Starts of the 1st QB Taken

2012 - Robert Griffin III - 2nd QB - Round 1, Pick 2
1st QB (Andrew Luck) started 15 games of 16 (Full-time starter)

2011 - Cam Newton - 1st QB - Round 1, Pick 1
1st QB started 32 games of 32 (Full-time starter)

2010 - Sam Bradford - 1st QB - Round 1, Pick 1
1st QB started 42 of 48 games (Full-time starter)

2009 - Matthew Stafford - 1st QB - Round 1, Pick 1
1st QB started 44 of 64 games (Full-time starter)

2008 - Matt Ryan - 1st QB - Round 1, Pick 3
1st QB started 77 of 80 games (Full-time starter)

2007 - Kevin Kolb - 3rd QB - Round 2, Pick 4
1st QB (Jamarcus Russell) started 25 games (out of league)

2006 - Jay Cutler - 3rd QB - Round 1, Pick 11
1st QB (Vince Young) started 50 games (out of league)

2005 - Aaron Rodgers - 2nd QB - Round 1, Pick 24
1st QB (Alex Smith) started 75 of 96 games (full-time starter, possible backup now)

2004 - Eli Manning - 1st QB - Round 1, Pick 1
1st QB started 135 of 144 games (Full-time starter)

2003 - Carson Palmer - 1st QB - Round 1, Pick 1
1st QB started 121 of 160 games (Full-time starter other than retirement whining)

2002 - David Carr - 1st QB - Round 1, Pick 1
1st QB started 79 of 176 games (backup)

2001 - Drew Brees - 2nd QB - Round 2, Pick 1
1st QB (Michael Vick) started 102 of 192 games (Full-time starter, then despised prisoner, then full-time starter, now not really sure but still despised)

2000 - Tom Brady - 7th QB - Round 6, Pick 33
1st QB (Chad Pennington) started 81 games (out of league)

1999 - Donovan McNabb - 2nd QB - Round 1, Pick 2
1st QB (Tim Couch) started 59 games (out of league)

1998 - Peyton Manning - 1st QB - Round 1, Pick 1
1st QB started 224 of 240 games (full-time starter with bad neck for cheating team)

You could make an argument that Andy Dalton and not Cam Newton was the best QB taken in the 2011 draft.

Andy Dalton choked big time today, I saw a bit of Matt Cassel there.

Dalton didn't have a good game today for sure, but still, he's played two years, has 7000 yards passing, 47 TD/29 INT and two playoff appearances playing in a division with Baltimore and Pittsburgh. That's pretty tough.

The Chiefs will be lucky if a QB they draft puts up similar numbers his first two years. There's more to it than that, but still he's done some positive things.

so you're saying the first QB taken, more often than not, turns out to be the best one?

Here's to hoping we trade down and take a QB at the top of the 2nd.

No doubt, why take the best when we can have the leftovers!

This demonstrates that skill can be used to identify the best QB in the draft (as opposed to the myth that it is a crapshoot). When you are in desperate need of a QB like the Chiefs are, and you think one QB is better than the other, you take him.

I read the KCstar article Go chiefs posted
said ANdy was a QB coach
if he sees something he likes, in the later rounds, give him a shot

the best part of this hiring was listening to my bosses dumbass son tell me how great it would be if Andy went to the cards
and then he completely STFU after we got him

Ouch....2007 and 2002 were truly awful QB classes...

Dalton two playoff appearances in his first two seasons and he wasn't a Joe Flacco-type bystander either during the process.

He's had two bad playoff game performances, but his career has been more impressive than Cam Newton's thus far.

I'd take cam over dalton.

Sure he's got more pure athletic talent, doesn't make him a better QB though....

Cases could be made that Joey Harrington and David Garrard were better than Carr in 2002.

Cases could be made that Trent Edwards, Matt Moore (undrafted), Tyler Thigpens ROFL. Or Drew Stanton(Milkman vote) were better than Kolb from 2007.

That is a weak group to choose from but Garrard has had the better NFL career out of those 3 players in 2002.

It wouldn't surprise me.

If what some people expect to be true actually happens (taking risks on QB's because the new CBA doesn't cause as much harm to the cap), there will probably be more first round busts than ever before.

I know it's still early but Locker and Gabbert don't look anything like conventional first rounders to me. It may be too soon to call them each a "Bust", but they've hardly lived up to their draft slots. And that was before the new CBA.

In my mind, it came down to Edwards or Kolb based on stats, and they were about even. I think Edwards had a few more yards, but Kolb had a slightly higher QB rating, so I went with Kolb.

And I missed Garrard. You're right. He should've been listed over Carr as the best QB of that draft.

This kind of feels like a little too much "positive reinforcement" that we can't fuck it up.

Some of those "best" options are debatable. Andrew Luck as an example. Did more "passer" things this year than RG3 did, but didn't do it as efficiently as RG3.

That being said, Andrew Luck also did it on a fucking atrocious team and made the playoffs. RG3 was in the "right" situation for a rookie QB. I'd hold back the reins a bit on calling Rg3 the best in this class and see where things stand a few years from now. I have no doubt in my mind that Luck is hands down the real deal here.

At this point, I know we're drafting Geno, but I'd like to use a crystal ball to look into the future and see what Bray does. He's got some bad and some good, and a tremendous upside. I hope that kid goes to the right environment with solid coaching in place to coach up his mental side a bit.
