On the Beer Trail: Boulevard Chocolate Ale in Missouri
Ethan Fixell
JAN 14, 2013

Editor's Note: Ethan Fixell tours the country as a comedian—and as a beer drinker. In On the Beer Trail, he'll share his tales from the road, favorite destinations, and beer recommendations.

The legend of Boulevard Brewing's Chocolate Ale haunts Kansas City like that of Nessie or Bigfoot: Nearly everyone I spoke to had either tasted the beer months ago or at least knew someone who tried it, yet every bar was out of it or never carried it in the first place. Bartenders and barflies alike seemed to speak of this "holy grail" in hushed, reverent tones—as if the beer's existence could be shattered by the mere utterance of its name.

Frustrated that the "Show Me State" had yet to show me a goddamned drop of precious Chocolate Ale after three hours of barhopping, my comedy partner/travel companion Dave and I decided to take a break from our seemingly impossible quest at a locavore-friendly restaurant called Room 39. We had delicious meals and a couple of great Missourian beers (though I can't recall what, exactly, as I was blinded with disappointment at the time). When the check came, the waitress politely interrupted our conversation.

"Have you guys tried the Chocolate Ale yet?" Her face melted into an expression of ecstasy. "It's amazing."

"So we hear," I replied, rolling my eyes at Dave. If one more person mentioned...

"They should have some over at the Riot Room," she said.

We left so quickly that there are still Dave and Ethan-shaped holes in the front wall of that restaurant.

The Riot Room (I guess Kansas City likes to include the word "room" in all its establishments' names to affirm that each is, indeed, an indoor space) is a rock venue that looks and smells like any rock venue should. But with 52 taps, it also happens to house one of the finest craft brew selections in all of the city. Of course, it was just our luck that we'd arrived two hours before first call, and with our show kicking off around the same time, waiting around wasn't an option. As we turned to walk back to the car, our heads hanging in dejection, an angel appeared before us: all hail the Boulevard Brewing distributor.

We followed the delivery guy into the Riot Room to find one of the owners taking inventory. After a few minutes of schmoozing about music and beer, we convinced him to hook up the fresh new keg of Chocolate Ale—ostensibly the only one currently left in the city—and serve us the first two mugs of the day.

"Don't tell anyone you got this here before opening...but I appreciate your dedication," he said as he pushed two glasses our way.

The beer, a collaboration with local Kansas City chocolatier Christopher Elbow, is brewed with crushed, roasted cocoa nibs. While I expected a deep, dark brown, the beer pours amber—no darker than your standard pale ale. It smells rich and buttery, which develops into an equally rich chocolate flavor, but the brew somehow emerges as a smooth, refreshing ale. It's an exceptionally balanced brew, and surprisingly light and easy to drink. Sitting there at the Riot Room bar before opening time, hanging out with the bar's owner and one of my best buds, I'd rarely ever enjoyed a beer as much as this one.

Yet while the beer was excellent, the real reasons for its scarcity soon became much clearer. When a great beer like this—a collaboration between a respected local brewery a well-known gourmet chef—is produced in highly limited quantities, it can inspire absolute mania. People will hoard bottles and line up at bars for the stuff, hype snowballing into greater hype. Often, finally tasting such a sought after prize—the score in and of itself—becomes the focus.

So was all the effort worth it? Perhaps Boulevard doesn't think so,—they announced this past summer that they would not be producing the labor-intensive Chocolate Ale in 2013. For me, my quest was well worthwhile: but as much for the lesson learned as well as for the tasty beer. These days I've resolved that that when actively tracking down a curiosity, you've got to enjoy the journey. The payoff in the hunt for something unusual is only worth as much as the path it takes to find it.

Not a bad beer. I like it. I agree that it's pretty well balanced.

That said, it probably wasn't worth what I paid for it. And it damn sure isn't worth what some people go through to get it.

Instead of brewing Chocolate Ale this year, Boulevard has brewed a Coffee Ale, collaborating with The Roasterie to do so. That beer may end up causing just as much hysteria in KC as Chocolate Ale did.

That is going to be huge. Hell, it could launch the Roasterie more than Boulevard.

Interesting. I love a good coffee beer - hope it makes it to MN...

I finally bought some 80 acre hoppy wheat, as recommended by some people here. It was very good.

It was a PR nightmare for them. So many complaints from people who couldn't get a bottle.

Are you sure you actually drank it? I think there's something wrong with your palate. It's no what some have made it out to be, but the flavor is without a doubt more sophisticated than that.

It wasn't a nightmare. It was marketing genius. Now, people are going to flock to whatever they put out in fear of missing the next big thing.

Not true. Sales of subsequent limited-release beers Stingo and Rye-on-Rye didn't approach Chocolate Ale levels.

As for it being a nightmare, well, that's from Boulevard themselves. Internally, they hate Kansas City's response to that beer.

Boulevard has finally made it up to Seattle. Needless to say, I'm stoked. I went and picked up some 80 Acres and Tank Seven the other day.

They hate a higher customer demand? **** them.

They probably hate whiny customers who don't understand they don't have the capacity to produce a seasonal beer like Budweiser has the capacity to produce their regular shitty beer. And the bad batches last year made it worse, even though Boulevard has handled all of it extremely well.

Kahlua? Cool mixer, not looking down on it, but not close to the same as a coffee ale. The latter seems really interesting to me.

That said, I'm going to miss snagging a few bottles of Chocolate Ale this year. Really liked that concoction.

The backlash towards Boulevard was mostly attributed to that fact that Chocolate Ale languished on shelves outside of KC, WAY before they released it here. I got a case from Cedar Rapids, IA almost a month before it got released here. Best part was, I got them for $7.99 a bottle there and retailers in KC were selling it for up to $20 per bottle.

Between the price gouging by retailers and the negative backlash from customers locally, I don't blame them for not brewing it anymore.

How is this shit worth 7.99 per bottle never mind 20.00?

What does it come with a couple of joints or something?

You have to check the content of the beer. Most are made with chocolate malts as opposed to actual chocolates.

That's for a 750mL, and that's pretty damned cheap, even for a good quality beer that isn't in crazy demand.

Even a standard beer like Tank 7 goes for 8.99 here, I think. Rye on Rye and such are like 12.99.

I mixed a Young's Double Chocolate stout with Lagunita's Cappuccino stout and it was delightful. Boulevard's Chocolate ale was not enjoyable. It was not well balanced and I would get a hint of cocoa in the aftertaste about every third or fourth drink. To me, it was like a mediocre homebrew. I checked, but the bottle I had was not the bad batch.

Enjoyed it more on tap than I did in the bottle. Good stuff.

I wanted to try it. Very badly. But after two liquor stores didn't have it, I decided some things in life are just not to be had by a common man that is unwilling to go through extreme effort to attain them. I mean, I'll never party at the Playboy mansion either, and I finally came to grips with that last year.

Might be the single best beer I've had in this life. If I saw another 750 of it right now, I'd have to break into the stash to buy it.

It's a nice novelty beer, but not something that I would actually buy year round. And I will concur with Zach, I found it to be much better on tap. The chocolate flavors don't come out nearly as full from a bottle.

Has anyone taken a tour of Boulevard?

May look into doing something like this one year for my birthday or something.

We should really consider doing a CP function there. Just under $30 per person for a 3 hour tasting room rental and brewery tour for up to 35 people on a Friday or Saturday night.

I still think the Pony Express 37 Forever party catered by Jose Pepper was the best grown-up party with which I've been associated. And Pony Express was a fairly mediocre brewery. I had an absolute blast and so did everybody else. We didn't have a single complaint.

I could swing that. We'll have to try coordinating that.

Being a Midwestern guy -- I absolutely love Boulevard's brews. Touring their factory and doing a tasting tour would be a great time.

If this is something that spawns CP interest you can count me and probably the girlfriend in depending when the event may transpire.
