Has anybody ever done a study to find out how many minutes in an hour AM sports radio stations actually talk about sports?

I'd say less than 20 out of every 60 minutes are actually "sports talk." If they're not doing a commercial talking about buying jewelry, it's a divorce lawyer telling you how to get your ring back! Throw in a little porn music wile you wait for the host to get back from the pooper, and nearly 40 minutes have gone by. Add the "sports news update" and there's even less time the sports talk guys have talked sports!

No disrespect 610 and 810 station lurkers, y'all are awesome (ask yourself!), but it's just a question I've had for a while...

Well its actually more like 12-14 minutes of commercials, add another 1 min or so of sports update and then porn music, you are probably getting 43-45 mins of The hosts. Now, if they dont talk sports the whole time thats another thing.

They also do about 12-14 mins of commercials per hour. It seems longer on Sirius for some reason tho. I think because the sound quality isnt as good as terresterial radio

the am guys here going to and back from a break spend a good 3-5 minutes talking about whatever awesome lunch deal they have going at a particular place.

especially the noon hour.

And then you have the hosts/guests who repeat the same BS point over & over, so how much time is actually spent talking about NEW/FRESH takes on sports issues?

Yeah but thats not an actual "commercial". Thats them giving love to whoever just fed them for free. And it certainly happens more on a talk radio format then a music format only because we dont have time to talk about food, we have to get that Metallica tune going ;-)

I can tell you why they do this as well:
We have a thing called Time Spent Listening. TSL. Most people arent glued to their radios. They are busy, in and out of their cars, their desk whatever. So just because you have heard the same point being made last hour, someone else hasnt. We have ratings that tell us what the avergage time spent listeing is. And I gaurantee you its not 3 hours. its more like 15 mins in many cases.

My drive in from Lees Summit to Downtown isn't usually an hour, more like 35-45 minutes. I'll have to not text for a change and bring my 1983 stop watch and time the content portion... I'm pretty sure it's more commercial than content. Oh well...

Time it. Every 'Commercial" radio station in the country is about 43-45 mins of content. 12-15 mins of commercials and little extras. If a radio station played 40 mins of commercials, they wouldnt be around very long. Also, image production isnt commercials. Thats the little fun shit you hear with the station call letters in it. Thats imaging, not commercials. In other words, thats content as well.

EDIT:
Now, if you are traveling during the time where they are most apt to play commercails, that may be why you are under the impression thats its more commercials than content. For instance, our "Stop Sets' (Commercials), are 6 mins a piece at 20 after the hour and 40 after the hour. So if someone drives everyday from 8:15am and arrives at work at 8:45am everyday, trhen they are going to hear more comercials, then say someone who leaves at 7:50am and gets to work at 8:30. those people will only hear 6 mins of commercials.

At top of the hour, it will be 3 to 5 minutes with ads and the sports news. Take a 4 to 5 minute break around 20 after the hour. On drive time, probably hit half hour mark with news and traffice. Then more ads around 40 to 50 mark. Then top of the hour again.

Actually that might be it, I leave the gym at around 6:40'ish in the morning and get into the parking garage around 7:20 (give or take for traffic). So that could be it.

Either way, even when a Low-T add isn't playing, or the hosts talking about something other than sports, the actual time spent on content still seems low... I'll get over it I'm sure...

Point taken, but I'll do what I can to count basketball talk as "sports" talk. It'll be a challenge, but I think I can do it... :thumb:

Sports talk radio isn't always just sports, really on any channel. Sometimes, they do talk about subjects. Sports talk is just the predominate topic.

I get sick of our guys always talking food, their last round of golf, and arguing about non sports drivel. Not to mention the on air non commercial advertising. Even though they technically only do 16 minutes of commercials per hour, there seems to be less than 25 minutes of actual content here in KC>

I listen to alot of espn L.A during basketball season, Mason and Ireland and Max and Marcellus, usually only interviews are repeated.

On the weekends they have this show called Weekend Warrior with Dr. Robert Klapper the head Surgeon or someshit at Ceaders in L.A and they break down sports injuries, very informative. Its really cool shit. Last Sat they talked to the Vikings team doctor about Peterson and why he recovered so fast and why MCL's and ACL's tear without direct contact.
Good shit.

Got some numbers, perhaps I won the Commercial/Drivel combo-pack on 610 this morning.... I got in the truck at 6:44am in Lee's Summit and stepped out at 7:26am in the parking garage in downtown KC. In that there were 17:54 seconds of "talk." I use the term loosely because this is what I heard:

* Commercials were playing when I got into the truck
* Next they went into a long dialog about the upcoming "Top 10" list for MT
* Got the news update - that was informative
* I know somebody got a free camera shoved up his furnaces' ass (and that's good evidently)
* Then it's going to be signing day, but most of that was about the girls who take tha faxes off the machine, so I didn't count that time. We all know we'd fuck any of those girls if given the chance. This is unless they talked as much as these guys did.
* More on the Top 10 (and how we all know know what MT's going to do mostly, so we're to focus on 2-10. OK!
* Then there was a VERY circular debate about BA and does he deserve $10M a year.

No offense to the fine Bob at 610 and his posse, but I didn't leave the truck any better for the cause. I appreciated the fact that some clown in Baltimore thinks either 13 or 19 years (he didn't recall the exact number of years the doode said) is too long to wait for a SB parade.. Yeah, I agree, STFU Mr. Baltimore guy! And I can appreciate a quick reference to the fax girls, I like it as much as the next person, but don't drag it out.

Perhaps the facts are this; those 18'ish minutes of content in 40'ish minutes (let's call it 50%) reflected a slow sports day, the Kansas City area is just having a slow sports week (so we focus on BA!), or these guys just weren't on their radio game this morning...

Sirius/XM has WAY TOO MANY Commercials on it....

Their talk stations are worse than regular AM/FM stations. Really is discouraging that I can listen to Sirius for my 25 min drive into the office and catch 20+ min of commercials.

They are extremely frustrating...

810 is the worst about that. "Where you going golfing tonight?" "How was that lunch you ate on break?" "We have Jack Harry here but lets play catch up about our personal lives for the first five minutes."

No shit:rolleyes: I quit listening to 810 specifically for this and especially the long pregnant pauses and so bad that I thought something was wrong with my computer only to find out they just had nothing more to talk about once you got past as you say, "whatchya having for lunch today" BS.

At least Fescoe on 610 keeps it funny with sports top ten lists when they have exhausted the day's sports topics. Fescoe is so much better than the "illegal immigrant patrol".

I just recently started streaming both stations especially early in the a.m. since we now have the 1st pick just to get the pulse of Chiefs Nation so I will admit I don't have a long contextual true objective take yet but initially just for the a.m. shows Fescoe and Josh are far more entertaining and informative.

The best part about 610 is that they will talk Chiefs A LOT MORE than 810 so if you're not a fan of local stuff here other than Chiefs you may find 610 more enjoyable even though they really don't know shit from shinola most of the time. Ummmmm, I gave them credit for it, so yeah, it was content, but it was no more than 50% for the 40 minutes listened to. So I guess I should update the OP to indicated that 610, at least, runs at about 50% of the airtime being "content" (in some legally defined way).

But I have the option to turn off the radio, I just wanted to answer something I had be curious about for a while. I'm not saying I'll even turn the radio off, I just might focus on other things. It's all good. :D

Yep. This is the primary reason why I listen to 610 and not 810.

Back on the topic of actually talking sports. zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. I mean what is there to talk about right now? College basketball or Royals couldn't put me to asleep faster. I like the NBA but around here nobody cares.

At this point I'm only partly listening for draft talk. Outside of that? Yeah bring on the light hearted talk about Cdot's date with Kelly Jones, etc..

This may be tomorrow's experiment. I'm not tied to either of the to sports stations, and I even have KMBZ in there to listen to also. Hell, I even have the other one that sports ESPN yapping...

It was just a fun question to answer. I'm pretty sure that the period of time I drive in each day is indeed wrought with commercials (no surprise advertisers want a rush-hour crowd to hear their ads!), so it's just the price I pay for drive at pretty-much the same time each day.

Who knows, maybe I'll enjoy Christmas in February and try satellite radio! I'm sure there's a "Girls of the fax machine" station I can listen to there...

I usually only listen to 810, mainly because the hosts are all local guys, that have deep rooting interest in local sports. Sure, they get off topic a lot, and spend way too much time talking about sports not many people care about, but I know they all have followed and rooted for the local teams.

610 seems full of fresh out of broadcast school guys, who feel the need to fill the show with topic segments, like, " Hey callers, call in and tell us your top five Super Bowl moments!" " Where does this latest one rank? Give us you're list of the three best Super Bowls!"
I just hate that kind of, killing time radio.
