Little part if a recent interview from next years ESPN # 10 and Rivals #12 recruit-

-You went to Iowa State last weekend for the Iowa State-Baylor game. It looked like you got showered with love ...
It was crazy. The fans were chanting. I stayed the night. The game was amazing. It was fun down there.
I saw the tweets and the pictures of all the signs. They went all out so much so that the Baylor coach had signs removed
They had Fat Heads, signs, and one of their quarterbacks was tweeting at me. I was shocked. It was fun.
-Why don't Gophers fans go all-out like that?
I don't know. They do, but that was the best I've been a part of so far.

Quote from his dad- "heart says Minnesota, but brain says Iowa State" he wants to stay close to home.

What: Iowa State (16-6, 6-3) @ Kansas State (18-4, 7-2)
When: Saturday, Feb. 9 at 5 p.m.
Where: Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan, Kan.
TV: ESPN2

This was always going to be a big basketball game for Iowa State and Kansas State. It’s just that three weeks ago, we all assumed that it would be for positioning in the Big 12 Conference. Maybe these programs would be duking it out for second, third, fourth or perhaps even fifth in the league as mid-February nears.

Then TCU shocked Kansas on Wednesday night and now, everything is different.

Both Iowa State and Kansas State enter Saturday’s contest with legitimate Big 12 championship thoughts in mind. Kansas State is currently tied with the Jayhawks at 7-2 in league play. The Cyclones are one game back and with a home game against Kansas still left on its schedule (Feb. 25), within striking distance as well.

As one guy put it Thursday after the Cyclone Fanatic Radio Show at BenchWarmers, “We (Iowa State) control our own destiny.”

It sounds crazy and he was half-joking but that fanatic was spot on. Here's a look at tomorrow's critical road game.

Breaking down the Wildcats
When Bruce Weber and his Kansas State team left Ames on Jan. 26 (after a 73-67 Cyclone victory), a lot of heads were hanging. After the Wildcats began conference play with a 4-0 record, KSU had just dropped two straight vs. Kansas (at home) and Iowa State. However that losing streak didn’t last long. The Wildcats rebounded to win their next three over Texas, at Oklahoma and at Texas Tech.

What makes this match-up so fascinating tomorrow is the fact that Iowa State of course is the Big 12’s top-ranked offense. Kansas State, who has held its last three opponents to an average of 55.3 points (and 23.5 percent 3-point shooting), is the league’s top-ranked defense.

Every time you play Kansas State, Weber’s best player Rodney McGruder is going to be a focal point of your defensive game plan. Guess where Chris Babb will be tomorrow? McGruder 6-for-11 and scored 13 points in round one. Because of Babb, McGruder is much less of a match-up nightmare for Iowa State compared to most teams in the Big 12.

Will Spradling is the Wildcat that has my attention leading into tomorrow. He went 4-for-5 from downtown against the Cyclones earlier this season and led Kansas State with 15 points in that game. Iowa State’s Tyrus McGee has gotten lost on defense quite a few times this season, giving up threes along the way. Because of that, Spradling is a big concern, especially playing at home on Saturday.

Prediction
Don’t look now but Iowa State is a trendy “upset” pick for Saturday. I’ve seen numerous national college basketball writers take the Cyclones in this one. Iowa State is a sexy basketball team right now. The Cyclones sling it and score the ball often.

Will Clyburn, who is averaging 21.3 points per game in his last four, is playing like an elite player in the league right now. Add to that – the fact that Iowa State just played what was arguably its most complete basketball game of the season, an 83-64 rout of Oklahoma on Monday night.

Iowa State has won three straight over Kansas State and two of three games in Manhattan.

The Cyclones get criticized often for not being a good road team but I think you can argue against that. From a win-loss standpoint, no, the Cyclones aren’t as good on the road as they are at home. But dig a little deeper and you’ll see that in two of Iowa State’s three road losses (Kansas and Oklahoma State), the Cyclones actually played well. Those were games against what are in my opinion, the best two teams in the Big 12.

Texas Tech was another story, one that if you’re hanging out at CycloneFanatic.com, you’d like to forget.

The fact that the “experts” are on the bandwagon right now makes any Iowa Stater a bit hesitant and full disclosure – I don’t have a great feeling about this game from the standpoint. Here’s where I do feel good though:

As I mentioned above, Iowa State was right there on the road at Kansas and Oklahoma State. Right there. In fact, any objective basketball mind would probably tell you that those are games that the Cyclones should have won.

My point is that when these Cyclones “get up” for a road game, they are more than capable of winning. This isn’t like some of those Eustachy/Morgan teams (Orr too) that when they left Hilton, you knew that they had only a very small chance of winning. If this team brings it like it did against the Jayhawks and the Cowboys, it will win tomorrow.

If it brings anything less and that will not be the case. I’m going against my better judgment here and picking the Cyclones to win for two reasons:

1) Because after impressive wins over Baylor and Oklahoma, this team is hitting on all cylinders right now. The Baylor win was especially impressive as Iowa State did it by going 4-for-24 from 3-point range. There’s something about winning ugly that I love. It proves that you can take care of business in multiple ways. I didn’t think Iowa State had it in them to do that. I love it when the Cyclones prove me wrong.

2) Because we haven’t seen any sort of a letdown at all since the Texas Tech loss from Iowa State. It is one thing to say that you learned from a bad experience. It is another thing to actually learn from the experience and not let it happen again.

Kansas State's physicality down low scares me. So does the fact that in Ames, I thought that Iowa State got a lot of calls...But that's also the game where the Cyclones couldn't hit a free throw to save their life.

What's most important though in my mind is this question: How can Iowa State just not show up when it is playing for a league championship? I think that pound for pound, the Cyclones are better than Kansas State and that's why I'm picking Iowa State in a thriller.

The Pick

Iowa State 71, Kansas State 70

Who exactly has Ist beaten to be so big in the britches coming into today? The noncon is littered w/ losses against teams w/ a pulse and one w/o one (Iowa). One win over Kst at home and all of a sudden they are proclaimed league champs. I do think they're good but nothing special.

Ku's struggles continuing today make it apparant this league is anybody's to grab w/ little separation in the top 4.

It is impressive how close it was with all our turnovers, how awful we were at rebounding in this game, and our best player only scoring 6. Lucious getting into foul trouble early was a big big hit to us too. Can't get too upset about losing @ KSU though. KU hurt more because it was just a BS bank 3.

Well the first one he was scheduled to go to since working out his problem with the Rockets.

"@brentblum: Royce White finishes night: 18 minutes, 7 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists. A bit out of shape, but talent still impressive."

He still should have stayed one more year, Fred is one of the best in the business at shooting the ball and that's the biggest area on the court Royce needs help. Could have been a magical season with him!

According to Pomeroy, KSU = 31 and ISU = 35 in the nation overall. So they are about the same team statistically. They also play the same type of game, being offense-first and defense sometimes (KSU 18 offense, 72 defense....ISU 8 & 118) Yet one is 26-6 and the other is like 22-10. KSU is 30th in the "luck factor" while ISU is a very low 258th.

So what does that mean? They're about the same team and one is lucky while the other isn't.

Good luck, 'clones. With their reliance on 3 pointers, I'm not picking them to go very far, but wouldn't be shocked if they got hot and did some damage.

Lucious has some Final Four experience. Hes been off his game the last two games, but if he shows up its hard to beat us. Will Clyburn is our big key though, we need him to show up like how he took over the end of the Oklahoma game. If both those two come to play, we can beat anyone.

Thats just a big IF though.

I read a tweet the other day, that if our games ended 45 seconds earlier, we'd only have six losses. And if they ended 7 seconds earlier, seven losses.

We just gotta close out games!

Time for karma to kick in, and a little luck come our way for once!

Good to see Iowa State stepping in to replace Missouri quite nicely here in the Big 12. Similar athletic accomplishments throughout their history and now eager to take on KU which is one of the best ways you can raise your profile as an AD.

If games like the two regular season ones keep up, might turn into a nice rivalry.

Eamon Brennan was very complimentary to the Cyclones.

3. Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg is really good at his job. There already have been plenty of reasons to think highly of Hoiberg in the three years since he took over at ISU: his ability to coalesce a roster full of transfers (and to take advantage of college basketball's highly active transfer market in the first place) into a real team; his ability to get complicated Royce White to put up the best year of basketball in his life; his highly impressive per-possession statistics, including post-timeout points per possession, a statistic in which his team led the nation in 2011-12. But if you weren't already impressed, Sunday should have helped you along. The Cyclones not only were one of the best 10 offensive teams in the country this season but also were one of the most entertaining, playing a five-out style that was as thrilling as it was effective. On Sunday, they took one of the best (and hottest) teams in the country to the wire, and had Craft not made the first 3 he attempted all game at the buzzer, they would have had a chance to win the game in overtime. The Cyclones are more than relevant again, and Hoiberg is very methodically -- and calmly -- making it so.

Fred is going to be near the top of any school or NBA teams list looking for a coach. I feel safe knowing he took a major paycut to take his dream job at Iowa State! I'm also very happy that thanks to new Big12 media rights, we can give big raises to him and Rhoads if they want, but both have refused more money because at this point they want that money going to better facilities and assistants! Class acts and I love the direction Iowa State is heading!

Yeah, I like hoiberg. He's definitely good for the conference.

But the true test will be if be can recruit. Always is with good XO coaches.

Two great freshman coming in that both may start be t year. Also a top 125 guy who redshirted who will be in the mix. I think recruiting will only get better too. We are a top school for the #1 SG next year! I think it's between Iowa State and UNC really.

No. There was a rumor last week that we were interested in a different guard... Can't think of the name but he was a great three point shooter. I think for the most part we are done with transfers, that was just to jump start the program back up. We will obviously take them here and there like any other school though.

EDIT- Aaron Cosby is the transfer I'm thinking of.

Aaron Cosby is also interested in Missouri. This will be the ultimate battle to see which coach is better at attracting transfers. LOL.

Top 5 team next year?

Should be a tournament team again, similar to this years and last years. We will be super young next year, with the potential to be something special a year or two later.

Ejim and Niang are the only two quality minute guys returning. Bubu will be back, but he should be nothing more than he has been previously... Just take a few minutes to give the PG a breather.

Gibson started at C to start the year, and he can be a threat when he gets the ball and was awesome his freshman year... But this year three guys would close in on him under the basket and he'd still try puttin it up instead of passing it.. And he got a little lazy on defense. So he was replaced by Niang. If he gets lets selfish and puts more effort on D he might be in the mix again, but our Juco coming in is said to have blown away all of our bigs in the gym this year.

Ejim and Niang will likely man the 4 and 5 again, and I'm guessing the two freshman will be our guard and either RS freshman guard SDW at the three or Juco SF Hogue.

I like the Mayor ok, but has any coach without a single Sweet 16 ever been more lionized than this guy? Has anyone garnered Hero status with any resume less accomplished than Fred? I mean, look at Self's record by comparison. Like comparing Aaron Rodgers to Russell Wilson.

Not surprising really....I mean...its ISU.
For reference, their God is Johnny Orr....The greatest coach ever
at ISU.....

His record? Overall 218-200 and 79 -177 in the Big Eight.

He should of got Hero status after he somehow reached .500 his first year. He inherited an awful team, god awful. Then two tournaments the following years? He's only going to get better at coaching and he's getting better recruits each year. Selfs job was way easier. He inherited a good team, that constantly gets good recruits. Fred is taking us in that direction, it doesn't just instantly happen for a team like ISU with a first time Head Coach, who wasn't even and assistant coach before that.

Self's current job is definitely easy to win at. However, he started at Oral Roberts and Tulsa. He took Tulsa to 32 wins and an Elite 8 before going to Illinois. Where he won big as well. If Self can take Tulsa deep in the Tourney, Hoiberg should be able to at Iowa State.

I have no doubts that he will. I believe Morris, Thomas, and Niang will be apart of his first team to do it... That's two freshman and a sophomore next year. Not saying it will be next year, but they will do it.
