Here's a question: We have been assuming that Reid will install his pass-happy offense here in KC and needs a QB that can handle that workload. Now that he's picked up Alex Smith, who is not a prolific passer, does this mean that he's going to change philosophy and try to run the ball more?

Oh and fuck Alex Smith.

Of course you didn't mention that he had a broken finger on his throwing hand in that game. Realistically he shouldn't have been out there as that was his worst game in 3+ years.

Look up highlights of his passing at the end of the Saints game in the playoffs, he's one of the best in the NFL at making plays when it counts, running a two minute offense and a no-huddle. Andy Reid is a known QB guru and he LOVES Alex Smith.

He also just spent a week at the Combine, meeting with and watching college QB prospects, if he makes this move now, maybe, just maybe, these prospects aren't the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Seriously though, I just assumed that Reid was sticking to what he did in the past. Has he actually said that he will? If so, Alex Smith seems like a bad choice for that system. Alex Smith is "perfect" for the R2P2 slap-dick offense we've been running for the last however many years it's been.

My head may completely explode if we draft DL and Reid holds a presser to say "we're going to run the ball and play tough defense, I was wrong to pass the ball so much while I was in Philly".

Chiefs decision to trade for Smith says plenty about their optionsPosted by Mike Florio on February 27, 2013, 3:40 PM EST

Last year, when Alex Smith was an unrestricted free agent, the Chiefs didn’t make a play for him. This year, they opted to send the 34th overall pick in the draft and a conditional selection in 2014 to San Francisco in order to secure the final two years of his contract.

So what does this all mean? Let’s break it down.

First, it means that coach Andy Reid concluded during his time to date on the job that Matt Cassel, Brady Quinn, and Ricky Stanzi aren’t the answer. (When Reid was on PFT Live last month, he left the door open regarding the possibility of giving the job to one of the men on the roster.)

Second, it means that the Chiefs didn’t like any of the available free-agent options in 2013. If they did, they would have signed a guy and in turn kept their picks.

Third, it means that there was no one else they wanted to acquire via trade with a lesser package of picks.

Fourth, and finally, it means that the Chiefs not only decided that no incoming rookie quarterback justifies selection with their first-round pick but also that no incoming rookie quarterback justifies selection with their second-round pick.

Regardless, then, of how well Smith plays (or doesn’t) for the Chiefs, the deal means that the Chiefs have considered giving up a second-round pick and another pick in the future for the 49ers’ No. 2 quarterback to be a better option than any other option that was available to the team.

Which means, frankly, that the Chiefs really didn’t believe they had any other options.

.

I'd say this is a wakeup call to the Geno Smith Kool-Aid drinkers who act like he's Joe Montana in black, but I'm not that optimistic that they'll see the reality of the situation.

Bottomline, this is a bad year for QBs in the draft, not a single one of them is ready to start, so unless people fancied the Chiefs with someone like Matt Moore at the helm next year, this about as good as it could have been for them in terms of having a quarterback.

You also have no chance of playoffs with Matt Moore. Give Alex Smith a good running game, a supportive head coach and he'll run with it. There's no reason this team can't make it to the playoffs, they've got a few holes to fill in, but they've got a solid defense, a good QB, a great RB, good coaching, its all there, but there's so many pessimists here that they're only responding in emotional and visceral fashion rather than looking at the potential that is right there before their eyes.

Smith's unofficial trade from San Francisco to Kansas City invited comparisons between Smith and recent Chiefs starting quarterback Matt Cassel. Smith was much better than Cassel during the 2012 season. He has much better traditional passing stats over the past two seasons. But as the chart shows, Cassel and Smith have identical Total QBR scores over the past five years. They were at 46.6. All starting quarterbacks were at 53.0 over that period. ()

Cassel was slightly ahead of Smith, 46.4 to 45.8, when only starts were considered. (We are fucked)

Even 49ers fans know he sucks.

Alex will play fine, but he's definitely limited in what he can do.

He cannot throw the ball downfield with any accuracy. He cannot get through his progressions quickly enough and winds up checking the ball down way too often.

His third down percentage and yards/attempt are awful. He will make very inaccurate throws at crucial times and he tends to miss the rbs on his checkdowns.

https://twitter.com/TheFilmRoom is absolutely destroying Alex Smith and this trade today. Give him a follow.

@TheFilmRoom

Nuance with Alex Smith's motion is he doesn't get extended. Negative motion in windup...at 6'4" releases point is next to head.

@TheFilmRoom

Similar to Brady Quinn in that respect. Drops ball to waist...limiting forward motion/release point...hurts ability to manipulate passes.

@TheFilmRoom

Reason extension is important is a QB gives the wrist more range of motion. From the wrist manipulate trajectory, speed, release.

Hammock Parties

@TheFilmRoom

Smith can't be made out to be a savior...it's pretty evident who he is. It's who Cassel was supposed to be last year...don't get in the way.

@TheFilmRoom

Smith in my mind can speed up our passing game. Have reservations if we gain any more versatility vertically. It's a plus, but not a big one

‏@TheFilmRoom

@CravenMorhead Cassel had 96 passes over 10 yards...Smith 46.

@TheFilmRoom

Have fun...you will only need one hand to count the win total Alex Smith has when opponent scored more than 24.

@TheFilmRoom

Let's not draft a QB because he's not elite...let's just grab the non-elite veteran QB and lineman. -Chiefs for eternity

@TheFilmRoom

@getnickwright we capped ourself off again at that spot...the arm alone is going to handcuff the passing game and things we are able to do.

Show of hands...who has watched Alex Smith throw...watched this draft class throw...and still feel Smith skill set as a passer is superior?

This is my favorite one. It's so true. Everything is now right in the universe. It was starting to get weird there for a while. It seemed like we were going to be forced into taking a QB in the draft. Now we can all relax and start talking about whether to go OL or DL with our first pick.

so we can bash Smith and hate the trade (deservedly so), but he is a massive upgrade to our team which doesn't really mean anything because I doubt in today's NFL you can win anything of importance with Alex Smith at QB.

So if there's any hope for Alex, it's that he will be accurate in the intermediate range.

2011/2012 Alex Smith 11-20 yards (24 games): 66-120 (55%), 1,162 yards, 17.6 YPC 6 TD 6 INT, 2.75 completions per game.

2010 Matt Cassel 11-20 yards: 59-113 (52.2%), 1,082 yards, 18.3 YPC, 9 TD 3 INT, 3.9 completions per game

I see a QB who not only threw the ball intermediate LESS than Cassel, but completed less pass passes by far and also turned the ball over more in that range.

Hope is not kindled.

Yeah, Cassel did that as well. You know, the Cassel we saw last season wasn't the best he had to offer. He was totally shot; zero confidence. I personally think Cassel's best is = to Smith's best, and we'll see that play out over the next four years.

How fucking depressing.

The more I look at this deal, the less I understand it. I just don't get it. Elvis Bono IS Matt Casshole. Here's how I see the side by side:

Specs:
EB: 6'4", 217lbs, 29 yrs old, 7 years experience.
Casshole: 6"4", 230lbs, 30 yrs old, 7 years experience.

EB Playoff record as a starter: 1-1.
Casshole Playoff record as a starter: 0-1.

EB Career Stats: 14,280 passing yds, started 80 games, 81 TD, 63 INT, 36 fumbles, sacked 196 times, 79.1 QB Rating.

Casshole Career Stats: 13,495 passing yds, started 78 games, 82 TD, 57 INT, 24 fumbles, sacked 160 times, 80.4 QB Rating.

Both guys grew up in California. Raider QB Carson Palmer was Cassel's best man. Elvis Bono married a Oakland Raider Cheerleader.

you can actually make a logical argument if you wanted that Cassel on paper, is better than Smith

how SAD is that

you are talking about a 1st overall pick being equal to a 7th round draft pick that never played a down in college in terms of NFL Production. So really, WHICH one is worse and which one exceeded their expectations. Kind of sad

The Film Room bringing the pain.

http://echointhehead.blogspot.com/2013/02/no-fancy-titlealex-smith-too-long-for.html?spref=tw

Who is Alex Smith?

Since 2005 up until a week ago I could care less to answer that question. He was a QB that San Francisco allowed to be pursued by the Dolphins...who ended up taking Tannehill instead. He was a QB that took his team to the front door of the Super Bowl, and a back-up to a QB that kicked the door in the next season.

Did you ever really want Alex Smith last year...did Miami...did San Fran? The answer is no...two teams passed...not for Manning, not for RG3, not for Luck...two teams passed for Tannehill and Kaepernick. Up until a week ago...how badly did you want Alex Smith?

San Fran and Miami worked Smith out, was up close and personal...the Chiefs made this choice at a time when they could have no contact. Smith was never an Eagle...he was never a Packer...if this choice is that important...get him in a room.

Sure Reid has contacts...but why choose a QB...a QB two teams passed on...without checking it out for yourself?

The stats lie...sure Smith's %'s and rating increased under Harbaugh...but his usage decreased. The two years under Harbaugh...San Fran ranked 31st in the NFL in pass attempts. San Fran was defined by defense and the power game.

The thing that bothers me about this situation. Reid's offense is dependent on the Quarterback to make plays. Even under Harbaugh...while Smith's rating increased...the TD's, the yardage really didn't. All indications do not point to an improved QB...points to an improved scheme to mask the QB.

The biggest issue with Smith is the lack of understanding where the numbers come from. The INT's decreased...the rating rose...but the sacks he took nearly doubled. This particular change is reflected in the rating...he didn't improve as a passer...he simply stopped making mistakes.

Make no mistake...we didn't get a good QB...we got the same QB by and large that was on the open market that few were clamoring for. We got a QB that has learned how to not make mistakes, in an offense that didn't ask him to throw much. That situation has changed...and it's important.

This isn't a brilliant move by Dorsey and Reid...it's a safe one. The film has been out for years...there is no re-writing Alex Smith's history. He's marginally better than we've had, and he's a vet with success...but he's not special.

People act like I'm not supposed to question...but in my heart...this move isn't one I can grip. I hope it works out, but I think it's a safe move...not the best move for the Kansas City Chiefs.

This! The trade off is he is not as tough as Cassel so we won't have to watch him flounder for long. Who ever the backup is in KC will probably play 3 to 5 games next year. All we can do now is hope that backup is some one drafted with the 3rd pick this year and happens to be good.

The 49ers have been no higher than 25th in third-down conversion percentage for Alex Smith's entire career.

32nd
26th
32nd
29th
29th
31st
25th

Exactly why so many niner fans were hoping he would be gone a long time ago.

That stat did NOT improve much under Harbaugh. The niners won a LOT of games last year thanks to the leg of David Akers. He set the record for field-goals last year. We won a TON of games scoring in the teens and having our D get turnovers. We had one of the highest turnover ratios ever recorded last year.

Alex didn't lose us games. THAT is the point. We relied on special teams, defense and not turning the ball over to get to the championship game. It was when we got down big/early that the true Alex showed. He is not capable of overcoming big deficits. His third down percentage is low because he is so afraid of making a bad throw that he immediatly goes to the checkdown if the first read is covered.

Alex has never been accurate on his second reads. If he has to move in the pocket he loses sight of the field. He panicks. He doesn't have the arm strength to stretch the field.

If not for Vernon Davis, we would have not even made the playoffs. Alex can hit the wheel route like nobody else, but the reason it worked so well for the niners is Davis' speed. He's the fastest TE in the NFL. Alex will NOT make those throws to your TEs unless they are WIDE open.

He completed 1 pass....................ONE PASS to a wr in the NFCCG last year. He reverted to captain checkdown in the biggest game of his career.

I don't hate the guy, but I am very happy he's gone.

I'm just trying to prepare you guys for what is coming. Your punter will become the MVP of the team. If your defense can get turnovers and your special-teams units can score some points you have a chance at the playoffs, but you will never win a SB with Alex Smith.

U can't say he's horrible. No professional or player in nfl thinks he sucks. Just be rational and admit he's decent. that's all we're saying. He's just good. Not great.

He's good under certain circumstances. He's downright terrible in others.

He can read defenses very well at the LOS, but once the first read breaks down, he becomes very inaccurate. He will force your WR to make some circus catches across the middle. He can't throw deep with any accuracy. He will have a play or two ever game that makes the entire stadium stand up and say WTF??????

Some people here likened him to AIDS. I disagree. He won't kill you. He's more like herpes. It sticks around forever and can be an embarassing discomfort at the worst possible time.

He does have some great qualities, but his limitations are what will keep the Chiefs from getting to the SB. Andy Reid will NOT be able to get Smith to win games. You will rely on the D and Special teams to win most of them. If you can hold the opponent under 20 and get a couple turnovers, you will win with ALex.

He isn't. And he won't.

We're stuck with a douchebag who can't throw the ball down the field.

Sure he can, he can roll right and throw to the guy in the BLACK TRENCH COAT who is standing out of bounds...

JFC I'm done hearing about how Alex Smith is an asshole because he went 1/14 on 3rd down in his biggest game of the season.

WTF about Geno Smith? That mother****er went 0/10 on 3rd down in his biggest game of the season and nobody says a ****ing word about it.

Don't be dissing on Geno "Black Jesus 2.0" Smith on this board.

Geno, with two NFL caliber receivers, completely dominated the 123rd ranked scoring defense in week one.

He kicked the living crap out of a defense so completely in week two that they weren't even ranked at all.

He showed true grit in week three when he defeated and demoralized a mighty Maryland team that was ranked 56th in scoring defense.

You want a QB that can go head to head in a shoot out? Look no further than what Geno did in week four as he took apart a mighty Baylor defense ranked in the top 113 in scoring defense.

Geno really showed his mettle as he was seemingly unstoppable against the 74th ranked scoring defense in week five.

Smith is such the master of the passing game he was able to hang 14 points on the unmovable wall of the 92nd ranked scoring defense in week six.

As any Jayhawk fan will tell you, the guys in purple are cheaters, plain and simple; that is the only way to explain how they managed to field a 28th ranked scoring defense this past year--yet Geno dismantled them and UWV scored an impressive 14 points in week seven.

Every QB experiences heartbreak at least once in his career, and Geno knows the heartbreak of losing in OT to the 30th ranked scoring defense in week eight.

Geno would have sweet, sweet redemption in week nine against the 64th ranked scoring defense in week nine. Or maybe not.

Realistic expectations at this point in the season should prevail; no one should expect Geno to win against the 50th ranked scoring defense in week ten.

All hail Geno! All hail Geno! Franchise Savior! Overcoming the greatest of odds, Black Geno 2.0 shows us the light and triumphs over the 38th ranked scoring defense in the nation in week eleven.

The curtain is coming to a close and Sweet Geno puts on a show for the ages against a daunting scoring defense ranked 112th in the nation.

I wonder why ESPN isn't GenoSPN all day and all night.

For a final encore in this illustrious season, the Face of a Franchise proclaims his glory and cements his legend as destroys the 46th ranked scoring defense in the PinStripe Bowl with a 14 point performance.

How can you question Geno? How can you not believe that someone with wins over the 123rd, 113th, 112th, 74th, 56th and 38th ranked scoring defenses might not be the franchise QB that every desperate bulletin board fan says he is?

Alas, you doubt too much...and for nary a reason. Overcoming the 92nd, 64th, 50th, 46th, 30th and 28th ranked scoring defenses is too much for anyone to expect of the Lord of the Pass.

Oh Geno, my Geno....

No. It means we're the Chiefs and we will never get a decent QB. Doesn't matter who it is; if you are a QB and you are associated with the Chiefs (sans Dawson) you suck. You might be great somewhere else, but while you are here or are coming here, you suck.

First decent game he plays, never mind good, and there will be demands for apology threads all over the place. Then, when the sample size becomes large enough and it's proven beyond a shadow a doubt that he sucks, we can start this process all over again.

I can't think of a single player that will have encountered so much hate before he plays a single down. As much as Geno would have received the benefit of the doubt from me, Alex Smith will have to be perfect in nearly every phase for me to give him props.

He will have to carry the team when the running game isn't working. He will have to make plays late in the game when we need good play from the QB. He can't get us in a hole early by turning the ball over. He will have to stretch the field with deep passes to help loosen up the defense for the run game.

I'm not going to give him a pass because he did not lose the game for us, he must be the one that wins it when no one else steps up. He has to do that all season or I'm not going to give him any apology.

Anything less than this and we should be looking for his replacement. Hell, we should be looking for that anyway. I'm being realistic though, we aren't going to take anyone capable of competing with him this season.

I second that. Did you know Kaepernick came in on key redzone situations earlier in the season before Smith went down?

Why?

Because we couldn't score for shit with Smith in there!

Smith made his money on play action passes with 8 men in the box to stop Gore. He is no good when the onus is on him to make the play. He'll just check it down or take a sack. I hope you have a great punter. There will be a lot of three and outs. Thank god we had Andy Lee, one of the best punters in the league who put our defense in good positions despite poor offensive play.

Why is his career high only 17 TD passes?

Many will say he has had bad WR core. I don't buy it. Brady was successful with scrubs early in his career and so have other good QBs.

My take is he is really cautious and in the NFL, to score TDs, you have to throw into tight coverage on time.

One, he is not confident in his arm, which is slightly above average at best so he is not going to fit throws into tight spots on a regular basis. This will kill you in the redzone and scoring ranges when those windows shrink due to the field shrinking.

Two, he gets rattled easy and has little pocket presence. MEaning, the timing will be off because he is not good at sliding around in the pocket and sensing pressure. He will have "happy feet" and sometimes feel pressure that isn't there. So this will throw off all the timing and he will just check it down. Thus, high completion percentage, low yards, low ints, low tds and high QBR.

Think about it. Last year the niners had a historical defense ad special teams and he mustered only 17TDs. Daid Akers broke the NFL record for most FGs in a season. that pretty much sums it up right there.

If i could post images and vids id show you examples but i'm only a rookie here.

Captain Checkdown is Matt Cassel.

He's in sole possession of that distinctive award.That's only because Alex Smith is Major General Checkdown.

I can't figure it out. It keeps saying naw.

But google 12/11/2011 49ers vs. Arizona. Go to the nfl website link and watch gameday highlights and forward to 2:48 of the video.

The game is on the line with a 4th down.

There are multiple pass catchers open and Alex smith senses pressure which is not there....The rest is just....

Also, that pass was an overthrow, The RB Hunter made a diving attempt but it was out of reach. Deoin and the candy crew announcers got it wrong, as usualy

Yeah in the last 8 years our third down percentage has been bottom barrel. The only time it became middle of the road was when Shaun Hill stepped in when smith broke his collarbone.

SHAUN HILL

He was essentially beat out by JT O Sullivan (who?) due to that injury and also benched for Troy Smith at one point. I remember Trent Dilfer coming in at some point due to an injury but I think my brain blocked out that traumatic experience.

Us fans will hate it!!! After watching some footage of Alex even when he is on he stares down the receiver, throws stiffly off his front leg....gadz mechanical...not fluid....after 8 years still bad throwing mechanics...Smith is atrocious and a horrible deal a second rounder OMG:shake:

How misleading, Smith rarely if ever threw to Moss in fact Moss only had 400:( yards all stinkin year he stunk as bad as Alex.....Moss is a WR not a RB or TE for a checkdown when they stack the box....:(

49ers fans chime in:

This is the recipe if you want to go to a championship game with Alex Smith:

SF 2011:

Break the record for most field goals in a NFL year

Defense allowed ZERO touchdowns rushing until week 16.

The special teams and defense broke the NFL record for worst averge opponent starting field position.

Have 47 takeaways on defense

Have 42 sacks on defense

2000 yards rushing

Defense holds for 64 rushing yards per game forcing opponents to pass.

49ers fans chime in:

You picking and choosing your fans and stats now huh?

What happened to -

He had a pretty solid season in 2006. The 49ers are horrible and have had no talent in the passing game for awhile so I'd give him a break. He could do some good things with Bowe.

Me wanting Alex Smith as a developmental replacement for Brodie Croyle five fucking years ago has absolutely zero relevance to present day conversation.

I've already stated I'd take him here as our backup QB.

In no way am I happy about him being the starter or giving up two high picks for him.
