Chiefs | No new contract for Alex Smith
Wed, 27 Feb 2013 09:41:00 -0800

At this point, San Francisco 49ers QB Alex Smith, who will officially be traded to the Kansas City Chiefs March 12, will play under the terms of his remaining contract, which calls for a guaranteed base salary of $8.5 million in 2013. There has been no discussions between the Chiefs and Smith's representatives about negotiating a new contract.

????? How many years are left on his existing contract ??????

Alex Smith signed a 3 year deal for 24 million with San Fran last year after missing out on Peyton Manning.

Well we probably will still draft a QB but not the one that everyone had hoped for. 2 Quarterbacks in 2 Rounds I just dont see happening. They will draft a QB in the 3rd or 4th round and use the 1st round pick to trade back and acquire more picks.

Anybody know anything bout Zak Dysert the QB from Miami (OH) ?

Just long enough for him to pull a couple of good seasons out of ass, while JC gets run into the ground, to warrant a 5 year deal once his current contract runs out.

I doubt that.

He'll play two years ranging from 7-9 to 9-7 and then be let go.

Two years of all our football lives wasted...

They should be able to get the 10th best quarterback in a weak quarterback class. Well played, Andy.

OK. So ,He needs to play lights out to get another contract while we're developing another.

This is good news IMO.

BUt he "stablizes" the franchise, and 7-9 wins keeps butts in seats.

You must not know much about an Andy Reid offense.

Yes, but just think of the value Reid is getting by not taking one in the first or second rounds. With Quinn and Cassel likely moving on, they desperately need to shore up the backup QB spot and this draft is full of good backup QBs that can be had in the later rounds. /NFL draft "experts"

This is not the QB I wanted, I wanted us to draft Geno Smith but that dream is down the drain now more than likely, we will probably trade with Philly, Buffalo, or Arizona and hopefully we can acqure at least 3 picks in this years draft and 2 in next years to add some talent to this team.

He will play 6 games until he gets another concussion. More like half a year & 2 draft picks wasted. Oh, and the $ we could have spent on Albert.

Yeah I get that part of it, but what did Alex Smith have in SF? A good running game. Willing to bet that JC gets beaten into the ground in order to prop up Reid's hand choosen QB.

The 49ers still royally raped KC of it's draft picks. But this lessens the blow that this shithead may be only a 2 year plan.

I don't see it, why is anyone going to give us anything better than a 4th round pick this year to trade up to #1? It's just like 2009 with our 3rd pick.

JC had more rushing attempts this season than Gore did in either of the last two seasons. He'll be fine.

Yeah, I guess Dorsey learned at least one lesson from Pioli. If you sign a questionable backup QB from another team you shouldn't rush out and give them a long-term big-money deal without seeing them play a few games on your own team.

I just wish he'd learned not to sign trash QBs and give up drafts picks to get them. Maybe the next GM will figure that one out?

Oakland, Philly, Buffalo, and Arizona want Geno Smith.

Philly needs Joeckel too. Never know, anything can happen.

We can hope but I don't think Bray will be around, but I am hopeful he will too. I think the knock on him though is that he's pretty freaking dumb.

Agree with you 100% on that. I have always said that Bray would need a strong QB coach and some time to learn and grow. Well we have a strong QB coach and at least 2 years to learn.

If we can trade down (highly unlikely) and pick up another 2nd or 3rd round pick (which would only happen in Madden) we might be able to move up and grab him mid 2nd round.

Why are you guys giving up on Geno?

KC_Lee
02-28-2013, 10:03 AM
Why are you guys giving up on Geno?

The reality of the situation that this team will not pick Geno?

The GM stating that there was no QB worth the first pick before the combine?

The fact that this team just gave up our 2nd round pick, the 34th pick overall, for a dumpster fire the the HC is in love with?

The team's history of never drafting and developing its own start QB?

Take your pick or mix & match.

If he doesn't extend, then the compensation we're giving up is even more egregious.

In other words, he'll get his contract at some point.

Well, we don't not what the compensation is yet.

All i can do at this point is hope that John Clayton is right, and it's a swap + conditional 2014 pick

This is almost certainly from KFFL.

And it is almost certainly bullshit.

Alex Smith will get an extension this offseason.

Swap of 2nds plus a 2014 2nd rounder isn't so bad if KC drafts Geno or trades down to, like, #4 overall and drafts Matt Barkely. Actually, I'd dare to call that approach a bold one. Not ideal, spending three picks on two quarterbacks, but not altogether terrible. Win now AND win in the future.

Of course, this is not going to happen. Why would it? Hamas' Final Theorem and all.

No shit.

Seriously, this forum would probably turn back to being positive about the Smith acquisition.

Honestly, though, you don't give up 2 2nds for a two-year patch. Alex Smith will get extended.

Agreed, but it doesn't have to be now. I hope that we wait a year before extending him, allowing us to see if he's what we want for the team long-term.

Honestly, though, you don't give up 2 2nds for a two-year patch. Alex Smith will get extended.I would certainly be more positive. The compenstion is way too much for Alex Smith/I think virtually any other vet would've filled the role, but a vet and a 1st round pick would be the way I'd do it.

But they're not going to do that. You just don't give up the compensation that they did for Alex Smith if you plan to bring anyone else with any pedigree in.

Id like to think they just want to let him run out his two years and if theyve found theyre diamond in the rough they let him walk or keep him in a mentor back up (hasslebeck). But id also like to think no one would give up a second for A.Smith. Honestly i could swallow this deal if we swapped seconds but things dont look that way.
