The Alex Smith to #Chiefs trade is now official. 49ers get 2nd round pick plus conditional 2014 pick. Chiefs get starting QB

The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs. The 49ers will acquire an undisclosed 2013 draft choice, and a conditional pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, in return for sending QB Alex Smith to the Chiefs. Smith must pass a physical in Kansas City for the trade to be executed.

“We would like to thank Alex for his contributions to the 49ers organization over the past eight years,” said 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke. “He is a true professional who represented the 49ers with class on and off the field.”

Originally the first overall draft pick in the 2005 NFL Draft by San Francisco, Smith spent eight seasons in the red and gold. During his tenure with the 49ers, he started 75 of the 80 games in which he played, completing 1,290 of 2,177 pass attempts (59.3%) for 14,280 yards and 81 TDs.

In 2012, Smith was 6-2-1 as a starter, completing 153 of 218 pass attempts (70.2%) for 1,737 yards with 13 TDs and 5 INTs, and a QB rating of 104.1. In 2011, Smith led the 49ers to their first NFC West title and postseason berth since 2002. He threw for a career-high 3,144 yards on 273 of 445 pass attempts with 17 TDs, 5 INTs and a 90.7 QB rating.

Born in Seattle, WA, Smith attended Helix High School in LaMesa, CA. At the University of Utah, Smith boasted a 21-1 record as a starter and became the first player in school history to be named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.

This. Dorsey and Reid got my hopes up for a bit and there's still the draft, I suppose, but I'm fully preparing for a boring passing game and mediocrity. I still watched last year knowing full well we were fucked going in with just cassel and quinn, so I'm sure I'll watch this year as well. This is a bad, bad move, and there's no other way of looking at it. Alex Smith is a game manager who needs to lean on a team that runs the ball 550 times a year.

It's amazing to me, but the guy's been gone for almost 15 years, and we still haven't purged Martyocrity from this franchise. This is a total Schottenchoker move.

At least it'll be entertaining if Andy Reid tries to put AS at the helm of a pass happy offense. Should go nuclear in an epic way.

Make the wildcard and get bounced by teams with 1st round talent at QB.

I havent spent a dime on this team in 2 years. I use to get a new jersey every offseason but havent in years. And if Pioli was still around, I would be continuing that trend. However, I think its clear these guys want to win, they just happen to be doing something, WE'VE seen before. But they didnt do it here. And Im sure they arent going, "OMG we cant do that, Pioli did that. Who cares if we think the QBs suck ass in the draft, the fanbase will be pissed because they've read this book before!! We better draft a QB at #1 even though in our professional opinions it isnt smart, but the fanbase Thinks differentl So we better do it or theyll think we arent trying to win"
Please. Just because it isnt exactly what we want, doesnt mean they arent trying to win.

He outran a fat slow D-lineman and once he got to the edge he got a great block. Great play call.

So are the Chiefs going to turn him into the "new wave" RGIII? If not? I doubt this play has a thing to do with his tenure in KC.

I don't think this necessarily rules out Geno, obviously puts it as unlikely, but I don't see Chase Daniels being a #2. Hopefully he learned something in New Orleans from Drew Brees, but obviously these are very underwhelming Quarterback acquisitions. I'm not looking at our FA signings so far as anything spectacular: Anthony Fasano comes off as Kevin Boss only a bit better, I don't know a whole lot about Devito except that I liked his uncle in Twins, unless they bring in a tackle, I'd pretty much say that locks it up for the number 1 pick, especially if we're still pursuing DRC or Sean Smith.

Every move is pointing towards a Tackle at one or a trade down and taking one. Every single one. It really bothers me that they'd just cut a very good tackle in Winston to take one that high.

Yes because Cassel led a team to the NFC Championship and yes, Cassel was the one that was the #1 QB and led his team to a 6-2 start before his injury.

That is just one of my biggest harps on Alex Smith. Can he stay healthy enough to stay on the field for 16 games? His endurance track record isn't very good. He is weak. He has to rely on the run game so if Andy Reid expects him to pass more than 30 times a game he is going start to crumble. He is no better than any other retread QB we have seen the past 30 years.

I just don't see what we're going to do without our second round pick and if we can't trade down. If you only have Chase Daniels and Alex Smith on the roster by the time the draft rolls around you have to think one of our picks will be spent on a QB (More than likely a fourth round selection). I think we really screwed ourselves by giving up that second round pick, especially if we can't trade down to pick it back up.

not really,
Smith hasn't had a major injury since he had his shoulder rebuilt in 2008 he played in 26 consecutive games in the last 2 seasons until he had his concussion, started every game in 2011, and has taken some monster hits and gotten back up and still played,so in essence you really don't know that much about Smith or his durability.
people are going to be surprised by this guy he has a chip on his shoulder and I have no doubt he wants to prove dumping him was a big mistake.

This is true. Been seeing a lot more posts like this since the frenzy of the last week or so ended. Although personally, I think it has more to do with keeping Bowe and Albert than anything :)

One move I think would be interesting would be to bring Nate Washington over to KC. He's a good vet who's still relatively young (29) and is available for a late rounder. Would fit in nicely next to Bowe methinks.

The less the Niners asked Alex to do the better he looked. He had more yards per game n TDs per game under Sing/ Jimmy Raye tham Harbaugh.

He can't sit back and let his defence hold the other team to under 20 pnts here. His 175-200 yards and 1 & half TDs a game avg wont win many games.

so 27 consecutive years without a quarterback the Chiefs drafted winning a game for them. Not a Super Bowl or playoff game. Just any game

and in what can only be an incredible coincidence we'll probably make it 20 and 21 consecutive years of not winning a playoff game

Are you kidding? He just had a concussion last year that kept him out several games and then that gave the opportunity to Kaepernic. So don't say he isn't prone to injury. It wont take much if he gets hit to get another or more concussions to put him on the sidelines.

In 2006 Alex Smith became one of the only QB's in the History of the NFL to start and play every single snap of the season. No other 49er in history has done it and only a few in the NFL, Brodie, Montana, Young, Garcia ect... As for him being injury prone you can blame his shoulder on Mike Nolan, he accused Alex of not really being hurt. So he threw him in there and he was hurt worse on National TV. He really is a durable guy. Concussions, happen. He was cleared the next week, but Kap had taken off and Harbaugh rode it out. so they kept smith out. It wasnt that he couldnt play its that the staff would let him. It was a national story. Everyone knew smith was healthy.

Im sure you dont watch the Niners near as much as the Chiefs and Vice-Versa. For all the things you read about his play, he has done some great things as well. I think your gonna be surprised. He really is one tough SOB. He gets up time after time. I really rooting for the Cheifs fan base to change their mind about Alex. He has got the goods, just an entire career spent with no continuity. The NINER organization was just in shambles when he was drafted.

Unless Alex Reid Dorsey prove it in the playoffs that this is a good deal I'm not going to like it. They have to prove it. I have no reason to like this trade so it's up to them to change my mind on game days. I don't have any expectations that Alex Smiff was worth the trade. Let them prove it. That's what we get yet again another retread and we are told to like him. FN BS.

We will draft OT Eric Fisher with the 1st pick because the only way to win with Alex Smith is to have a pristine pocket. Fisher has played both left and right offensive tackle so we can keep albert at left and put Fisher at right.

Next year we will have options about keeping/trading Albert because Fisher can flip over to the left side.

he was throwing 225 yards per game and was on pace to throw for 26 tds...i don't think he's a game manager. he just makes goo ddecisiions. He can throw deep just watch highlight tape.

If you look at complete games played in 2012 (8) and project that out, his numbers are:

208 ypg/3318 passing yards/24 TD/10 INT

The passing yardage would have ranked 20th in the NFL. TD passes tied for 13th with Ryan Fitzpatrick.

His QB rating would still have been pretty because of his completion percentage, but that is the line of a game manager who is not being asked to do too much.

#Chiefs Andy Reid and John Dorsey on QB Alex Smith:

“After many discussions with the 49ers and Alex, we were able to come to an agreement that we felt was mutually beneficial,” Dorsey said. “Alex wanted to be a member of the Chiefs; we are excited to have him, and we think he can help improve this team.”

“Alex is going to fit in well here in Kansas City, and we are excited to have him on board,” Reid said. “We’ve seen him play, and he is very impressive. We are anxious to get him in the building and get him started learning our system.”

“I’m happy to be joining the Chiefs family,” Smith said. “I’d like to thank the Hunt family, John Dorsey and Coach Reid for giving me the opportunity to play football for such a proud franchise. I know from experience that Chiefs fans are among the greatest in the NFL, and I’m really looking forward to Sundays at Arrowhead Stadium.”

49ers get 2nd round pick plus conditional 2014 pick. Chiefs get starting QB.

Chiefs fans get continuation of Carl Peterson philosophy. Woohoo! Tailgates!

I no longer believe it was the Carl Peterson philosophy and am more convinced than ever that it is a Hunt mandate since the Todd Blackledge failure.

Once the GM is a serious candidate and signs his non-disclosure agreement, the bomb is dropped.

Lamar/Clark: Well, now that you (Peterson, Pioli, Dorsey) are fully on board with the Kansas City Chiefs, I want to let you know more about the Kansas City Chiefs policy. We do not draft quarterbacks in the first round, period. If you divulge this information, your football career is over, and so is your life.

He never once came out of the game, the backup never took one snap, not even to kneel down.

You mean on a Patriots team right? Lets not start comparing that franchise to yours. I think he had a few more pieces around him then. You compare Alex career to Cassel but it doesnt even come close to the same path. Only stat wise do they look similar. Cassel was groomed and brought along, played when an injury happened. Alex was thrown into the fire just after he turned 20 on the worst team that has taken the field in 50 years. You know the rest of the story. Cassel has never dealt with what Smith has.

No wonder you were banned from your own boards, you moron.

Joe Flacco, is not elite.

I wouldn't rank him with Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, no.... but I think his playoff record and last years performance shows otherwise.
