Whats says Chiefsplanet.....Can a woman succeed in the NBA?

http://espn.go.com/dallas/nba/story/_/id/9127664/mark-cuban-give-brittney-griner-opportunity-dallas-mavericks

LOS ANGELES -- Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban would be willing to give Baylor women's star Brittney Griner the opportunity to prove she could play in the NBA.

Cuban said he would consider selecting Griner, a 6-foot-8 three-time All-American and Big 12 player of the year, in the second round of the NBA draft. If the Mavs don't draft her, Cuban said he would have "no problem whatsoever" inviting Griner to try out for a spot on Dallas' summer league team.

If she is the best on the board, I will take her," Cuban said before the Mavs' Tuesday night game against the Los Angeles Lakers. "I've thought about it. I've thought about it already. Would I do it? Right now, I'd lean toward yes, just to see if she can do it. You never know unless you give somebody a chance, and it's not like the likelihood of any late-50s draft pick has a good chance of making it."

Griner dominated women's college basketball with her size and athleticism, scoring 3,283 points and blocking 748 shots in her career. She also had 18 dunks, including 11 her senior season.

Griner would love the opportunity. "I would hold my own! Lets do it." she wrote on Twitter on Tuesday night in response to Cuban.

A woman trying out for an NBA team is not unprecedented. Former UCLA star Ann Meyers tried out for the Indiana Pacers in 1979.

Cuban said it's difficult to evaluate whether Griner could play in the NBA because of the caliber of her competition, comparing it to scouting players from small schools. However, Cuban said he was absolutely serious about at least extending an invitation for Griner to try out this summer.

"She'd still have to make the team," Cuban said. "I'm not going to carry her just to carry her. I don't think, anyways. But I certainly wouldn't be opposed to giving her the opportunity."

Cuban acknowledged that Griner playing in the NBA's Las Vegas summer league would have tremendous marketing potential.

"It would, wouldn't it? See how she could do?" Cuban said. "That'd sell out a few games."

As a business move, its genius.

The publicity, advertising sales, ticket sales, jersey sales.... cash cow.

And all he has to do is let her be on a summer league team.

Is the NBA draft still 2 rounds? Then he ain't taking Griner in the draft.
Would he bring her in for a "try-out"? Sure, for the publicity.

No way in hell she could actually make the team. No way she's strong or fast enough for the NBA. Only possible role for a female in the NBA is if she was an absolutely dead-on 3-pt shooter they could use her in spot situations where they could get her a wide open shot.

There was a discussion on this board a couple years back asking if Annika Sorenstam or Michelle Wie could compete on the Men's PGA tour. The answer is---absolutely not.

The physical differences in golf between men and women are pretty huge. Imagine the difference between men and women basketball players. It's likely she would perform well in some boys high school games. But against college men? Pros? Please child.

She could probably play on some lesser men's college teams, but not against major college players. I just watched some youtube video of her and it's a joke to even suggest that she could make it in the NBA.

Some people far underestimate the strength, speed and quickness of professional athletes. Even the ones that "suck" are better than 99% of humans. Even those totally ripped female Olympic track stars have no where near the strength of similar-sized male athlete.

I agree, but...When you go from college to the pros what do we always hear them say? They get bigger, faster and stronger. She will not.

The guys in the NBA would dominate her, push her around and physically man handle her. Once they realize, especially if she made a play on somebody, that she was trying to take their money or a roster spot, these guys would show no mercy.

It would be embarrassing.

She's 6'-8", 208. She played center in college. She's obviously not going to play center or power forward in the NBA, because she's too small for those positions. Physically, in terms of height and weight, she would probably have to match up with small forwards. But even the small forwards would still outweigh her by 30lbs, yet they would blow by her off the dribble with complete ease. She would also get beat to death on the offensive end and rebounding the ball.

I never got the people that view these things as some sort of "victory" for women's causes. If you let her play in the NBA, then you gotta let men play in the WNBA. Only major sport I see a woman playing could be baseball as a slap hitter (honestly surprised there arent any) or as a kicker in the NFL but it would hafta just be FGs cuz she would get demolished in special teams running down the field.

Ppl that think she can make it against the men have obviously not played against a supposed upper level womens bball team. Oh, probably in the Liberty league or something, but dude. They were keeping track of her dunks. Hell coming out of high school I could dunk. And I'm 5 inches shorter than she is and I probably would have sat the bench at a community college.

Hell, TCU and TTU were some of the NCAA's worst in 2012-13, and I don't think she plays on their team at all.

Female Marines Fail Infantry Officer Course (http://freebeacon.com/female-marines-fail-infantry-officer-course/)

BY: Washington Free Beacon Staff
April 3, 2013 10:28 am

The only two women to participate in the Marine Corps Infantry Officer Course (IOC) failed ongoing tests to determine which infantry positions should be available to women, according to the Marine Corps Times:

The women failed the introductory Combat Endurance Test, a punishing test of physical strength and endurance, officials at Marine Corps headquarters said Tuesday. The latest class began March 28 at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., with 110 lieutenants participating. Ninety-six men passed the initial endurance test. Twelve men and two women — the only female Marines taking part — failed.

The two women both volunteered to participate in the IOC. Two other women had previously volunteered in September but also failed.
