Jonathan Winters, the comedic film and TV actor who was huge in the '70s and '80s on shows like "Mork and Mindy," has died at age 87 ... TMZ has learned.

Winters died last night of natural causes in Montecito, Calif, around 6:30 p.m., surrounded by friends and family.

RIP. He was so funny in so many ways. A great improv comedian. It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World still one of my favorites

This guy really had a life. He was a marine, an art student, a painter, an impressionist, a TV star, won Grammys for comedy, won Emmys for TV, had one of the first TV shows broadcast in color...

He was also a raging alcoholic for a long time, and wound up spending eight months in an insane asylum.

Without him, we don't have Carson's goofy sketch comedy, Robin Williams improv or Jim Carrey's physical humor.

One of the true comedy greats. One of a kind. Big loss to comedy.

Man...loved his comedy. They play some of his old improv bits on 24/7 Comedy where he would take audience suggestions and act them out. RIP.
