View Full Version : Chiefs Late night bullshit: the best player in the 2013 draft.

Not the best player the Chiefs could draft.

The best player. Judging all positions the same.

Who is the best player in the 2013 draft? I shot this question to Sorter the other day, and he struggled to answer.

It's a tough question to answer this season. Even most of us Geno lovers frequently name other players as the best pure football player in this draft is.

I know that's a tough question to negotiate an answer for, since "best" can be interpreted multiple ways.

So interpret it however you want. This is a bullshit thread, not a legal document.

My interpretation of best player = who has the best combination of football instincts & acumen, and who manages to succeed despite certain physical limitations that may be present (or, if physically gifted, who doesn't just coast on that physical ability). In other words, who plays the game the best (not necessarily with respect to NFL projectability).

For me, its probably Tavon Austin or Barrett Jones.

Kevin Minter is up there too. Geno Smith, yes (partly because he makes up for iffy lower body mechanics with accuracy and intelligence). By my own criteria I have to include Joeckel.

Good explanations.

My only thing with those guys is Austin is tiny (there are exceptions to the rule, Desean Jackson); and Jones had a lisfranc injury if I'm not mistaken, which are a bitch to come back from.

If Jones' spine wasn't an issue, I'd say toss-up between him and Jordan. But since it is, I have to go Jordan.

Pretty much. I took Austin at 8 in the mock and Minter in the second...if he was off the board, Jones would have been the Falcons pick in the late second.

If it weren't for a huge need at qb, Minter might have been the Bills second rounder.

I should have put Jarvis Jones in my post. The injuries to guys like Jarvis & Barrett make NFL projectability difficult. But goddamn can they play the game itself. Hell, with Barrett, his injury only makes him more impressive since he played in the SEC Championship with that injury against John Jenkins and in the BCS championship game against Louie Nix.

I think Tavon Austin is the best player in the draft.

He's versatile, faster than lightning, and surprisingly durable.

I'm torn between Joekel and Jordon. Joekel has great technique and already uses them when most have to learn them when they enter the league. Jordan has incredible natural athleticism and if he is used correctly could be truely destructive.

IMO best player in this draft to change the fortune of a shitty team that is picking top 5 of the draft is Geno Smith. So imo Geno Smith would make the biggest long term impact out of the players in this years draft. Best player to make a loser franchise into winners would be Geno Smith.

I have to go with Austin based off of who I have seen. I have only seen clips of Jordan, and from what I can tell, most of his sacks... while impressive... came when he was left unblocked. Not that he had that many sacks.

Austin, by a slight margin, over Geno for me.

Lump me in with the Austin guys.

A hit with Geno Smith (or Barkley) would be a bigger impact, however.

Tangental sidebar: I can't believe Nassib is being talked about at 8. I mean I can, his coach and all, but I never saw anything from that guy that spoke to anything above lower mid-round talent.

Sharrif Floyd or Star Lotulelei

one or both of these guys is going to pan out with the ability to stop the run, and rush the passer and that is a rare premium for d-lineman that big and fast that can do both, as a team has to gameplan for them. (JJ Watt, Haloti Ngata, etc)

but if you are talking best player at his position, Chance Warmack or Jonathan Cooper could be top 5, top 3 at the guard position in like one or two seasons, so technically, they would be the fastest risers in the respective skill set.

If we had any need at all at that position, I'd be lobbying hard for Jones. I don't care about the spine thing. The guy produces Derrick Thomas-like numbers.

Even without a need I wouldn't be upset if we took him. I love quarterback sacks (emphasizing the football term of 'sacks').

Tough one to pick because it is so hard to evaluate between different positions. I think the best offensive guy in the draft is Chance Warmack, and the best defensive guy is Jarvis Jones.

No. No. He's a mediocre corner at best, and that's speaking about his college level of play. And I wouldn't say he's a better returner than Barrett Jones is an offensive lineman or something.

I know this guy isn't the best player in the draft, but I really do believe DeAndre Hopkins is the best WR in this class.

HUGE hands that help him catch everything, speed is solid and his route running are also solid.

Tavon Austin is the best known talent at the position, but I don't think he can be a #1 WR like Hopkins can.

Woot woot, mentioned in the OP.

Truthfully, this question is difficult.I suppose if I'm just looking at how they played throughout college and aren't projecting how they'll be as players, I'd say that Sheldon Richardson, Jarvis Jones, Barkevious Mingo, Tavon Austin, Barrett Jones, and Kenny Vaccaro are all viable candidates.

I really want to put Quinton Patton in this group but I just can't justify it. Gun to my head, I'm probably taking Sheldon as far as this thread is concerned.

He has to prove that he can be the number one option on his own team. He wasnt the receiver that defenses focused on last year. That was Sammy Watkins. I think he can be a solid possesion receiver. Big hands, but hes slow.
