View Full Version : Football The Blind Side is a bad movie.

It's got a feelgood plot and everything, but geez.

Outside of Sandra Bullock, the acting is horrid.

The writing is super predictable.

It's like if someone was to write fan-fiction about Michael Oher's personal story.

Too cheesey. All of the "bad guys" in the film are hilariously dumb caricatures, and the characters don't talk or interact like real people.

Anyway.

What were we talking about?

Really? I totally bought the scene where the little kid is teaching Oher about the rules of football, offensive and defensive formations, etc.

Yes, horrible.

Also, I'm just going to come out and say it: the movie has no plot.

A really big dude is adopted out of poverty and, surprise, is really good at playing football.

Some colleges recruit him, he picks one of them, has to dodge some administrative hurdles and he's there.

Roll credits.

And in the movie, didn't he get like a 96 in protective instincts?

WTF is protective instincts? Is there such a thing as a test for it? And who the fuck would test poorly at it?

I still haven't found out if they really do have standardized 'Protective Instincts' tests.

Worst line in a move ever. "He scored in the top 1% in protective instincts. OMG"

Where do they test public schools for protective instincts?

Direckshun

And why would they, anyway?

"Well, this guy's going to really struggle in math class. But at least the guy's loyal to his siblings. That definitely matters, somehow."

The daughter, I can't remember her name, spoke in Springfield. She said that the movie was pretty much spot on except for a few liberties. The actress who portrayed her got several bruises from playing volleyball. She asked the daughter if she got that many bruises. The daughter said she never played volleyball. The actress asked the director why she was having to play volleyball when the daughter didn't play. The director asked if she'd rather learn how to pole vault. Apparently, the daughter was like the #2 pole vaulter in the state. The actress said she'd stick with volleyball.

Also she said that Michael slept on an air mattress at first, and not the couch. It was back in the day when air mattresses weren't really made to hold that much weight, so he'd wake up to a nearly flat mattress every morning.

She said that Sandra Bullock played her mother perfectly.

I know its Hollywood and all, but the biggest stretch in the movie is that the family, after 'rescuing' him, taught him to play football.

Dude was First Team All-State and ranked as a national top-5 offensive lineman prospect. This was BEFORE the family met him.

But on a serious note about this film. I felt it created a good depth into the life of a young hoodlum. Not until some wealth was brought into his life by some kind, nurturing and hot white lady. See, without money. One can not have happiness and Michael Oher had not that until money found him. It's a classic American tale expressing just how wonderful it must be to be rich and every once in a while, a rich white person will help out a black hood.

Hmm. I did not know that.

My favorite part of the movie was when Sandra Bullock got naked and wrestled with the NCAA investigator lady to save Oher's eligibility.

Oh. Was that actually in the movie or was that something I added in my mind later? I don't remember. It was so vivid.

Well, she lied if she said that Oher being a big, dumb, ox was accurate. He didn't struggle like that in school. He's a lot smarter than the movie made him out to be.

It wasn't really portrayed very well in the movie, but I think it was more of the fact that he was undereducated (as in teachers not caring or taking the time with him). They didn't exactly say how far along he came in his academics.

I agree though. The actor didn't do a good job in that regard either.

It wasn't that bad. It wasn't meant to be a classic movie. It was poorly acted and formulaic but so are most movies. I agree with others, McGraw does seem to maybe have some acting talent.

Saul Good

Oher's character was such a stereotypical "big, quiet black guy is a gentle giant, but he will crush you if you are mean to his rich, white family who show him love in a way his original shitty, poor, black family didn't/couldn't...also, he seems dumb and is easily confused by his new life with white people, but he has a wisdom about him that shines through when you get to know him" that it ruined the entire story.

Add in the "black bad guys are so violent that they pull out their guns any time someone even thinks of disagreeing with them" trope, and you've got a true abortion of a film.

It's so patronizing that it ends up being horribly racist while trying to be the opposite. The black guy isn't a person...he's a pet. He's too dumb to take care of himself, so a family has to take care of him. In return, he is loyal to the family, and the viewer's heart breaks when someone dares wrong this sweet and gentle creature.

It was not a bad movie, but it was boring and unremarkable and seemed hard to believe.

I almost always hate sports movies because they take a story and make it predictable, schmaltzy, and boring. Every sports movie is basically like every other, a bland "feel good" movie.

Sports movies generally suck because they take what you love about sports, passion competition and unpredictability and turn it into some PG rated Disney nonsense
