A Utah soccer referee who slipped into a coma after being punched by a teenage player during a game a week ago died Saturday night, police said.

Ricardo Portillo, 46, of Salt Lake City passed away at the hospital, where he was being treated following an assault, Unified police spokesman Justin Hoyal said.

Police have accused a 17-year-old player in a recreational soccer league of punching Portillo after the man called a foul on him and issued him a yellow card.
...
Portillo suffered swelling in his brain and had been listed in critical condition, Dr. Shawn Smith said Thursday at the Intermountain Medical Center in the Salt Lake City suburb of Murray.

Wow, that's horrible. I think the kid should definitely do jail for it, but I have no idea how long? It's not like he meant to kill the guy. Just a horrible situation all around. Lives ruined over a stupid mistake.

I believe the charge would be involuntary manslaughter.

Have no idea what the minimum sentence would be for a conviction.

It's manslaughter, for sure.
And i'm glad no dumbshit has come in here saying "life with no parol"... yet.. I'll give it another 10 posts until some fuckfaced fuck says something as stupid as we know CP is capable of.

5 years with possibility of parole after 3 sounds about right.

Life with no parole is definitely the way to go...... or isolate him in a room with Rex Hudler.

I think Rausch's suggestion - Life of reffing soccer games would be punishment enough.

This is one of those cases where prison doesn't seem like the best solution, though it's certainly called for. The kid should be incarcerated for a year or two to do anger management therapy, and then he should pay the family some stipend every month for the rest of his life. He stole their family member, after all.

And with the felony conviction, he can work at Mcdonald's the rest of his life.

Apparently the Grim Reaper overlooked visiting this ref for the last 5 years. The deceased looks like he got more than his daily allowance of grains and water through the intake of doughnuts and beer; probably smoked 2 or more packs a day as well. It looks like he's stored a whole Bundt cake inside his neck within the upper part of his esophagus, to be completely swallowed immediately upon thinking of food. The player feared the ref was going to eat him and reacted in self-defense, thinking he was reaching into his pocket for a salt shaker.

A mistake?!?!?!?

What, he hit him accidentally?

Fuck the little bastard. he needs about 50 years in a hardcore prison. That way he won't be too dangerous when he's released.

He already had a yellow card for shoving another player, so I bet this gets him a red.

I'm surprised there haven't been refs slipping into comas all over the world from the overwhelming boredom of having to watching that much soccer tbh.
