Portland man dies in meat grinder accident

A 41-year-old Portland man died Saturday night when he fell into a large meat grinder at Interstate Meat Distributors in Clackamas.

The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office said Hugo Avalos Chanon was among several contract employees with DCS Sanitation Management who were cleaning the grinding equipment at the plant on Southeast Last Road at about 11:45 p.m. Saturday, April 27.

Deputies said Chanon fell into the grinding machine while cleaning the equipment. Another employee hit an emergency switch that stopped the machine, but Chanon died at the scene.

Oregon’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the accident. No other details were released.

years ago I had to go into huge grain bins and try to push steel rods down through the corn to unclog the bottom where the auger pulls it out. MAN. I was young and dumb. I was in the middle of a grain bin on top of 40,000 bushel. If it had collapsed I would have been done.
