Yeah. The beautiful thing about Kansas is that you can claim the prize and keep your anonymity. Snag a little off the top to pay the bills for a few years, invest the rest, slowly improve your lifestyle over a few years, and slowly fade out... spending a lot of time travelling, maybe even under an assumed name.

I like that idea.

Rain Man
05-17-2013, 08:56 PM
So the gross cash will be about $377 million. You take out taxes and you're probably around $203 million.

I have a deal with a friend where we split any big winnings, so my take-home would be around $101.5 million. I then have a deal with karma where I would give one-third of it away, so my breakdown would be:

$67 million for me.
$17 million for my wife to give away however she seems fit.
I give away $17 million as follows:
$7-$10 million to family and friends
$500k-$1 million to an animal-related charity
The remainder would go into a scholarship fund for my high school. The scholarship would be for first-generation college students, and I would award one scholarship per year. It would be structured something along the lines of this:
$8,000 in freshman year
$16,000 in sophomore year (assuming they make grades)
$24,000 in junior year (assuming they make grades)
$24,000 in senior year (again, grades)
$15,000 upon graduation to take a trip anywhere they want, and it would be a surprise.

Now, my $67 million is more than I need, so I don't need to live just off the interest. So I would take out about $1 million per year for living expenses, which would end up being $46,000 per month after taxes. That's more than enough to live permanently on a cruise ship and travel around.

Here's the process.

1. Drive to the Quick Trip.
2. Look to see if they have a Powerball sign on the front.
3. Go in the store, holding it open for the pregnant woman who is entering to buy cigarettes.
4. Pretend to shop in the candy aisle while trying to figure out what country the counter guy is from.
5. Check out the soft drinks. Ponder the amount of calories in the energy drinks.
6. Look at the doughnuts. Break down and get one.
7. Go to the counter.
8. Wait behind the pregnant woman buying cigarettes, the UPS guy buying the day-old hot dog, the housewife in curlers cashing in her $2 scratch lottery winner, and the kid buying a pack of Nerds in pennies.
9. Tell the Kashmiri counter guy that you would like one powerball ticket with no powerplay. (Powerplay is for suckers.) You may buy more than one ticket, and you may pick your own numbers using one of the handy forms, but most people just ask for a ticket. The Kashmiri guy understands the implication that you are purchasing "Quick Picks", which are computer-generated random numbers.
10. Pay the Kashmiri man two dollars per ticket purchased.
11. Return to your car, dream about how your life would change if you won.

I'd probably post about the same amount.

I'm accustomed to my current lifestyle and honestly wouldn't need most of the money for myself. I'd probably go through the list of family members that have helped me along the way and pay off all of their bills and make all the necessary improvements to their current homes to improve their quality of life.

From there, I'd put the necessary amount in an interest bearing account for all of my families children to have their educations paid for and houses purchased for after college.

From there, I would go back and find the dozen or so teachers that were influential in my life and do the same for them as I did for my family.

Next, I'd carefully select my closest 20 friends through my life and do the same thing as my family members.

Then, I'd make a donation to all the schools I attended to improve them and offer more after school activities and start some community projects to better the areas around the schools.

Next, I would look to purchase some key Star Wars movie props because I'm a nerd like that.

From there, I'd probably want to invest the rest into something that would change the world for the better in one way or another.

Yeah I paid my money to the idiot tax of America. $2+ investment for hundreds of millions of dollars? Yeah, you'd be pretty dumb to not at least try.

I'd put my parents into early retirement, my Dad is 63 and still works a job as a maintenance man and within the last 5 years went through Chemo, became cancer free, but took away his 401k. He needs it.

I'd give my fiancee the wedding and honeymoon of her dreams, and the life of her dreams as well. I figured if she loved me when I had no money, she's worth keeping around when I do.

I'd pay off so many people's debt. School loans, car payments, house payments, friends and family members alike. Debt is the enemy in the economy nowadays, if you can get people back to even ground, and give them a little bit of money on the side as well, it'd be a great gesture.

Obviously donate a good chunk to charities that have to do with saving lives. March of Dimes, World Wildlife Fund, Adoption Programs, Animal Shelters, I'd probably donate $20 million over my lifetime to these causes, at least.

Everyone has the dream, of what they'd do with the money. If I could make life easier for me, my family, my kids, my friends, I would feel like I accomplished my ultimate life's goal.

But acting like it's somehow "dumb" to not throw your money away is...well...not very logical.I'll buy two tickets when it gets over 300 million. So I'd say my money wasted on lottery tickets is less than $10 a year. If it was meant to be, its meant to be. No reason to buy $50 worth of tickets because the pot is up to $600 million. I'm sure it improves your odds but not worth it.

It's the poor that buy the majority of the tickets. But a middle class guy or gal buying $20 worth of lottery tickets every 3-4 months aint no big deal. Your on food stamps, welfare....WTF are you thinking?

Yeah, I think of the things I waste money on... Red Bull, Beer, eating out, etc. None them come with a chance of winning a million dollars. It's a small use of my disposable income.

For the stats guys, the expected value of a $2 ticket is up to $1.68 after taxes, and $2.51 before taxes. That means it's almost free to play. If no one wins it this time, we need to group together and buy $175 million worth of tickets and we'll guarantee a profit.

Unless there are multiple winners, which is ... probable? Improbable but still possible? I don't know how to phrase that it's possible that two or more people will get a 1:175,000,000 sequence of numbers, just due to the sheer number of tickets sold..

I've always heard that if you won a powerball jackpot and took the lump sum, you end up with roughly 30% of the amount after all taxes are settled.

200 million-ish in my pocket would be ok with me.

Has any millionaires tried to win the lottery?

IIRC, the first person to win a powerball jackpot over 300 million was a millionaire businessman from somewhere back east (Carolinas?). His story was a disaster - one of his grandaughter's friends was found dead in his pool, and supposedly some people got access to his accounts and cleaned him out.

Again, IIRC.

Apparently a group of Australians bought $5 million of Virginia lottery tickets in 1992 and won: http://www.forbes.com/sites/joshbarro/2012/03/30/can-you-ever-guarantee-a-mega-millions-win/

Yeah, the likelihood of multiple winners, which is exacerbated when casual players jump aboard when the jackpot is huge, assures that the expected value will always be < $2.

200 million-ish in my pocket would be ok with me.

The high tax figures and the way so many people go through the large amount of money within a couple of years are why, when I actually spend money on the lottery (very seldom), I ask for the annuity payout. You get more total and you are guaranteed a very large income for many years (probably the rest of my life at this point).

600 million paid over 25 years = 24 million per year before taxes. It might be a little rough but I think I can survive on that for a few years before needing to find a job again. ROFL

Keep in mind, the advertised jackpot doesn't actually exist. The cash they have on hand to pay the winner is the lump-sum payment. If you choose the $600MM option, you are basically telling them to hold your money for you, invest it in an annuity, and pay you from it each year. They calculated that with interest, you'll eventually get that higher number.

If you want an annuity, you could buy one yourself. The tax difference doesn't matter much (except maybe in CA where they have a million dollar bracket), you are way into the top bracket either way, and if you take the annuity, maybe they raise taxes in 10 years.

If the lottery winner is either dumb, a spendthrift, or weak-willed enough to be taken advantage of, they should do the annuity. If the winner is smart, they should take the cash.

Check those Powerball tickets, Florida residents: One of you is holding the winning ticket in the record $590.5 million jackpot. One ticket sold at a Publix Supermarket in Zephyrhills, Fla., has matched all six numbers, the Florida Lottery announced Sunday. The winning numbers were 10, 13, 14, 22, 52 and a Powerball of 11."This would be the sixth Florida Powerball winner and right now, it's the sole winner of the largest ever Powerball jackpot," Florida Lottery executive Cindy O'Connell told the Associated Press. "We're delighted right now that we have the sole winner."She said Florida has had more Powerball winners than any other state. The winner was not immediately identified publicly and O'Connell did not give any indication just hours after Saturday's drawing whether anyone had already stepped forward with that winning ticket.Estimates had earlier put Saturday's jackpot around $600 million, but Powerball's online site said Sunday that the jackpot had reached an estimated $590.5 million. The largest lottery prize ever was doled out in March 2012 to winners in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland for a $656 million Mega Millions top prize. Saturday's drawing doesn't top that jackpot, but it's the highest in Powerball history, surpassing that game's $587.5 million record set in November 2012.
