Was going to put this in the other thread but since there's 38 of them, I'll put them in their own thread.

I've been following the OTA stuff on twitter and apparently McCluster has been pretty rock solid so far, had a great picture on twitter that I won't be able to find of McCluster jumping like 40 feet up in the air to catch a pass. I'm really excited to see what Andy can do with him in this offense, since it sets up so well on paper for him.

He is a big physical press corner that will be playing behind a front 7 that should be pretty damn good.

Our front seven comprises of big bodies blocking up lanes, and pro bowl caliber outside linebackers that can get at the QB when asked to.

So, you're wrong.

Why is that good?

Our defensive line has absolutely no one that is even close to special.

Why is that good? Okay let me spell it out for you.

The other day, teicher or someone else reported that the "new defense" seemed blitz happy. So, you take your 2 pro bowl caliber OLB's and you blitz, you take your 3 fat kids up front and block up lanes, and give your pro bowl captain ILB/MLB who excels pass coverage and ball hawking, the chance to move freely in that defense and make plays. You take your new ILB/MLB guy, likely going to be Nico, and you use him to fill a gap in that guard/center vacancy depending on run type. You then pile on two physical cover corners, a Strong Safety (berry) who does very well in run support and has every tangible playmaking asset you could ever want on the strong side, and then add in a free safety to provide your support in zone.

If they run, you've got lanes filled up inside with what should turn out to be two VERY good inside linebackers in run support with your big bodies, speed on the edge to get these running backs to cut back against the grain into those filled lanes, and some hard hitting safeties if Dunta moves over to FS, if not you've got Berry and a more zone coverage Lewis to play with.

If they pass, you've got two solid corners in man coverage, one far exceeding the other in zone coverage, and pretty decent safety coverage. Now add in those two pro bowl caliber OLB's we were talking about earlier, and blitz them. Your opponent will have to go with a quick release or an incomplete pass to avoid the sack.

Where do most quick release throws go? They generally go two places. They generally go inside between the tackles, or they go outside to the sideline. If you have the two man coverage corners over there to prevent the outside sideline routes, you go over the middle or dump to the back field. If you dump to the backfield, you've got speedy OLB's on that guy quickly. If you go inside, however, you've got arguably the BEST coverage ILB in the game.

I'm not sure you're looking at the big picture here, but from what I've seen, from what I've heard about this new, very young, very raw defense and scheme that Reid and company have devised, this is going to turn out to be an absolutely BRILLIANT year for DJ in the middle.

If they do what I'm thinking they will be doing, DJ is going to make another Pro Bowl if he doesn't get banged up. He'll have a shit ton of garbage tackles, millions of passes defensed, and likely going to be one of his higher pick years unless Nico ends up being somewhat decent in coverage for some of this formations.

The big picture isn't that Smith is good, or that our Linemen are all stars, its that the pieces we are putting together around the already decent defense we have, are only adding to its strength, not amplifying a weakness.

You can stay on the "we suck, everyone here sucks" bandwagon all you want, so far I've been pretty damned accurate with what Reid and Dorsey have been doing here, dating back to before we signed them. While I don't completely see or agree with what these two are doing at certain times, the big picture is coming together.

We might not make 8-8 this year, we might not make the playoffs or win the division, but this team is being built right from all accounts, and we're adding strong depth to positions that we've had injuries to starters that, on their good days, play lights out.

In the end that's what has really hurt us the last few years. Losing Charles, Moeaki, Berry, etc.

When our team is healthy, we play pretty well, sans Cassel play. When we aren't healthy, we get rolled over. We've done nothing but add starter-quality talent, to our depth in many of those positions, and automatically and instantly upgraded the play of our worst position, QB.

This team is getting built right, eventually you'll come around.

Exoter is correct...great post.

BA's Balls is nothing but a whiny bitch. He would rather predict the worst than actually want something good for the Chiefs. Who gives a shit if he comes around or not? If this is all so traumatic for him, why is he still here?

Agree! I guess the forum wouldn't be as amusing without the whiny bitch brigade... but I am very glad that there are SOME quality posters with an ounce of faith in their team still left on here.

I, for one, am optimistic. If for no other reason, I'm tired of being pessimistic. Dorsey and Reid have a far better resume than Pioli did (hey guys, I rode the coattails of BB and Tom Brady, can I be your GM?).

I get the pessimism, I've been a Chiefs fan for 23 years, but for once I feel like the future is bright. Reid is a winning HC. Dorsey was an integral part of a SB winning team. I'm starting to let go of the mentality that this team is doomed every season. Do we have an elite QB yet? No we don't, but I'm willing to give Smith a chance.

I'm looking forward to our LB corp being one of the BEST in football. INT's by Berry and Flowers. TD's by Charles and Bowe. Hell, I'm even looking forward to being PISSED when they go 3&Out instead of expecting it.

I can't wait to see the sea of red again, the loudest bunch of pissed off fans in pro football, and proudly wearing my Chiefs jersey 1000 miles from Arrowhead every Sunday.

Injuries are not what's hurt us. 2011 was an aberration.

Two things have killed us, over the years: a lack of star players, across the board, and quarterback play. Simply put, the players that are traditionally best on our team are at positions of secondary importance. Tony Gonzalez was a great example of this.

Things are little a better now. Bowe's a legit star, at an important position. Ditto for Hali. You just can't overstate the value of pass rushers. And Houston may be another star in the making. Jamaal Charles is a game-breaker, albeit the only one the team has. After that, where are we? Berry? Okay, I think he could be there. But he's a safety... Flowers? Maybe. DJ? Inside linebacker, although he is good for the occasional big play.

But that is a few names, and they have gotten better in that sense. They need to continue to find guys who can change the scoreboard on offense, and guys who can turn games on defense. That's been the problem over the years, and why every offseason we hear about how this new system or that new system, on either side of the ball, is going to make so much of a difference. And of course rarely does. Because, while I wouldn't say there's a talent deficiency, per se, we're constantly trying to get star results out of a roster without many stars, through trickery and scheme. When what we really need the most is guys who are flat out good enough to beat the guys lined up against them.

All the talk about McCluster, that's an example of this. He's a gadget player. As shifty as he may or may not be, the simple fact is that he's never shown at this level that he has game breaking speed. Not even in August.

So that's the question: has Reid brought in many players to ameliorate that lack of stars? Avery, perhaps. He has the speed, if they can coach the consistency. I think Kelce could be turned into something, as well. Earlier comment about Gonzo aside, we have seen hybrid TE's make a huge impact in the NFL. Aside from that? I don't know. I see a lot of loading up for depth, but what moves have been made that make the starting 22 significantly better, and not just trading out one guy for another? I guess we did get a new right tackle with the number 1 pick.

That's not even discussing the QB. And in the end a lot does ride on Alex Smith. Although personally I think any veteran QB not named "Cassel" could've come in with the team's 2012 roster and increased the win total by at least 6 games. So for me anything under 8 or 9 wins will be a disappointment. And for what we gave up to get him, I think we should expect more from Smith, and expect it immediately. This isn't 2001 with Trent Green throwing to Snoop Minnis and Chris Thomas.

And yeah, 8 or 9 wins probably sounds great. Woohoo, big improvement! But I'm thinking about the things we need to do to turn this franchise into a perennial 12-game winner. And I'm not sure I see that in this offseason's moves.

But it is only one offseason, and you can't really tell what's going on with that little a sample.
