I actually did some work on this thing, called the dominator. actually was the dominator 2. http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2009/10/16/automobiles/autos1.480.jpg Has very large rods that dig into the ground.

There's a lot of info online about it (just google TIV2). Here's another tour of it that they did back when they were on the Discovery channel.

There was a Mythbusters episode where they tested the TIV and the Dominator. The TIV held up better... I think the winds were above 200 mph. It was built to shoot IMAX video... so this guy probably has some amazing IMAX footage from this.

Maybe..the imax movie tornado ally was released a while back. Got several shots inside a tornado and got a few in 3d. Must be working on another one..

They took storm chasers off and reed timmer(dominator) has online shows you have to pay for. You can also pledge money toward the site and if you pledge 10,000 you get to ride in the dominator and get in a tornado

If they allowed something this cool to leak, just imagine how good the stuff that makes the show will be.

exactly. F5 can tear off the road from the ground, and in the last one tossed a bulldozer (or some other heavy equipment) on top of a house.

Yup they are saying now it was definitely a EF4 tornado that went over them. Pretty much that tornado was at the limits of what the TIV 2 could handle. Pretty freaking amazing and crazy!!! Can't wait to see what it looks like in IMAX.

Of course that tornado was right in the area Braden Wilson is from in Smith Center.

I kind of hate to nitpick but why not affix the camera to the dash or something? It seems like they went to a lot of trouble and risk but then his camera dipped down low and cut off part of the view.

It would definitely be pretty tense, but it might survive. As mentioned, they tested it up to EF5 speeds on Mythbusters and it held up OK.

The big difference, though, is that that test only involved wind - not debris. If something heavy hit that thing at 200mph, it's gonna do some pretty major damage.

The reason that is the only camera you see things with is due to the fact the others are footage meant for the IMAX movie.

But was it a swirling, lifting wind? I could be wrong, but I'd think handling straight line wind is a lot easier than dealing with a swirling, low pressure, pulling up tornado. But as you said the debris would be the got you, if something hit it and lifted it up even slightly, would it still hold.

I was upset when that show got cancelled. We would watch that all the time. It would be awesome (although scary) to be in that.

same here..but at the end it was mainly tv drama bs anyways..the first couple of seasons were pretty cool

I have been watching storm riders recently..its cool but of course they dont have the tiv or dominator to intercept the tornado but they get some nice videos and pictures

I chase sometimes and got my first tornado last week in Oklahoma

Yeah, tough to say. The Mythbusters test was indeed a straight-line wind. While I think the anchors would hold it down from even a swirling wind, you're definitely right - if something big hit it and raised up an edge, they'd be in for quite the ride.

Storm Riders is cool. One of the guys on that show, Juston Drake plays hoops at the YMCA I go to here in Topeka. He's a cool dude. Really down to earth. And really passionate about meteorology and weather chasing.

Amazing how destructive these things can be. I saw a car off the shoulder of I-35. Looked like it went through a crusher.
