NORTH ATTLEBORO, Mass. -- New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was questioned by police investigating a possible homicide in this town 40 miles south of Boston. A source with knowledge of the investigation said Massachusetts State police spoke to Hernandez on Monday and were interested in possibly searching his home.

Hernandez is not believed to be a murder suspect, according to a source, but a vehicle rented in his name has emerged as a key piece of evidence in the investigation. The Sun Chronicle of Attleboro, Mass., reported on Tuesday that police identified a rented 2013 Chevrolet Suburban with Rhode Island license plates in connection with the possible homicide. According to the paper, the vehicle is registered to Enterprise and investigators were hoping to analyze it for fingerprints. A source said Hernandez's name is tied to that rental vehicle.

A jogger found the body of a 27-year-old Boston man on Monday in an North Attleboro clearing, less than a mile from Hernandez's home.

A North Attleboro police car idled in front of Hernandez's home on Tuesday, parked across the street from two television news vans. Yasmina Serdarevic, a spokesperson for the Bristol County District Attorney's Office, declined comment on Tuesday afternoon when contacted by SI.com.

A source close to Hernandez confirmed that the player had spoken with authorities in connection with case, but would not elaborate. Athletes First, Hernandez's agency, declined comment when contacted by SI.com. Hernandez has consulted with a lawyer, who did not return a call from SI.com.

A fourth-round pick in the 2010 draft, Hernandez was named to the Pro Bowl in his second season. Last season he caught 51 passes and scored five touchdowns for the Patriots.

Report: Hernandez recently was sued for allegedly shooting someone in the face

June is a slow month for football. It hasn’t been a slow month for a certain football player’s lawyers.

According to TMZ, Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was sued last week in a Florida federal court for allegedly shooting someone in the face.

The lawsuit, filed by Alexander S. Bradley, claims that Hernandez shot Bradley on February 13, 2013 while the two men were riding in a car. Bradley allegedly lost his right eye as a result of the incident, along with other injuries.

Per TMZ, the case was dismissed only four days after it was filed. Since it’s highly unlikely that any action was taken on the case that quickly, there’s a chance the case was settled.

Hernandez would have been much smarter to settle the case before it was filed. Between the lawsuit and the investigation in Massachusetts, Hernandez is now more likely to attract the attention of the league office, which is more apt to apply the enforce the personal-conduct policy when a player is involved in multiple off-field incidents.

Police reportedly spent hours inside Aaron Hernandez's home Tuesday night and emerged with a box.
There's still no sign that Hernandez is a suspect in the murder investigation, but he has consulted with a lawyer. It's possible that the box police removed from his home was evidence. The Patriots, NFL, district attorney's office and Hernandez's agents have all declined comment, leaving the public in the dark as to exactly what is going on. We only know that a 27-year-old male body of an "associate" of Hernandez's was found in the vicinity of a rental car connected to the tight end roughly a mile from his home. Jun 19 - 8:54 AM

The family of homicide victim Odin Lloyd tells WBZ-TV that Lloyd dated the sister of Aaron Hernandez's girlfriend.

The pieces of the puzzle are starting to come together. Lloyd's body was found roughly a mile from Hernandez's home, in the vicinity of a rental car connected to the tight end. WBZ-TV is reporting that Hernandez has not been ruled out as a suspect, but ABC says the tight end did cooperate with police Tuesday night.

He left his house in a white SUV Wednesday morning, presumably with his lawyers. A search warrant of the rental car is expected to be executed Wednesday. Jun 19 - 12:25 PM

I hate when newspapers report that someone is "uncooperative" with police officers.

Cops view it as their jobs to hang something like this on someone so by God, they're going to find a murderer in a high-profile case...oh yes, they'll find a 'murderer' for damn sure.

If someone's murdered in my front yard while I'm in Japan, if officers come to my front door and I have my passport triple stamped and signed affidavits from 18 people as to my whereabouts when the murder was committed, I'd still tell them to go get a warrant and we'll talk.

By the time they get back I'll have lawyered up and absolutely everything they get from me will be compelled by a magistrate.

Why? Because you're going to have to prove cause to get it and it's going to be a hell of a lot harder to fit facts to your narrative beforehand that way.

Being 'cooperative' in a damn homicide investigation is stupid. If a cop ever shows up asking you about a murder, I don't care how innocent you are, you lawyer up immediately and you make sure that said lawyer is there for every question you answer, every search that's conducted and ever statement made to you. This is your freedom on the line - being flippant isn't a good idea.

Report: Hernandez thought to have gang affiliations

According to a SI.com report, NFL teams were scared away from the prospect of drafting Aaron Hernandez in 2010 because of connections he may have had with gang members in Connecticut.

From Sports Illustrated:
Hernandez fell to the fourth round of the 2010 draft in part because of marijuana use while with the Gators, something he admitted to NFL teams at the scouting combine when he was a draft prospect, according to several NFL sources.

Personnel sources from multiple NFL teams tell SI that they had off-field concerns about Hernandez. In particular, the questions pertained to alleged gang activity of some of Hernandez's associates in his native Bristol, Conn. A law enforcement official familiar with Hernandez reiterated concerns about his circle of influence.

Combined, the marijuana use and gang concerns worried some NFL teams immensely. "There were a lot of teams that had him off the board," said an NFL personnel executive.

Two of Hernandez's Patriots teammates, one former Patriot and one current Patriot, told SI that they believed Hernandez was seeking distance from past associates in his hometown.

"It was a thug life," is how one teammate described some of Hernandez's friends, according to SI.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk should comment on stories traditional professional media produce that provide context and meaning about the news. Fact checking is an awesome online tool.

An excerpt from Boston Globe: Hernandez faces more legal issues

Hernandez was sued earlier this month in US District Court in Florida by a Connecticut man who claimed that Hernandez shot him in the eye after they attended Tootsies, a Miami strip club.

Attorneys for the man, Alexander S. Bradley, said in court papers that the incident took place Feb. 13, when Bradley and Hernandez were among a group of people who went to the nightspot together.

During the night, however, Bradley and Hernandez argued.

“Thereafter plaintiff [Bradley] and defendant [Hernandez] and two other persons were driving from Miami to Palm Beach, Fla.,’’ Bradley’s attorneys wrote in the suit. “Defendant had in his possession a gun. The gun discharged. The defendant caused the gun to go off while aiming it at the plaintiff.’’

The lawsuit, filed June 13, said that Hernandez does not have a license to carry a firearm.

According to the lawsuit, Bradley lost his right eye and has undergone multiple surgeries to repair his face. He is also now disfigured, has screws in his face to speed healing, has trouble eating, has become “substantially disabled” and will need medical care for the rest of his life, the lawsuit said.

Bradley withdrew the lawsuit on Monday due to an error in the text of the complaint, said his lawyer, David Jaroslawicz, in a Globe interview. He intends to re-file the complaint today, after making a minor correction to the extensive section of the lawsuit that describes Bradley’s alleged injuries from the gunshot.

Bradley’s attorneys have insisted that Bradley suffered more than $100,000 worth of damages.

At first it sounded like no big deal. "Not a suspect" and such. I figured maybe some guys he knew were involved in something.

Now it sounds like a "four guys got in the car, three came back", and the dead guy is the boyfriend of Hernandez's girlfriend's sister. And if 2+2=4 here, then the car they got into is probably one rented under Hernandez's name.

Most criminals are really stunningly and amazingly stupid, and it sounds like Hernandez is no exception. If he did this then he is a scumbag and deserves whatever he gets.

Amnorix

How does Hernandez have that massive house and the money to pay people off after shooting them in the face?

He was only a fourth round pick and TMK is still playing on his rookie deal.

He signed an extension with a $12.5MM signing bonus last year. And then apparently completely lost his mind.

If he's out of action the Pats will likely sue for recovery of the signing bonus. Don't know if there's anything that can be done in terms of cap relief.

http://espn.go.com/boston/nfl/story/_/id/8306183/new-england-patriots-tight-end-aaron-hernandez-agree-extension-sources-say

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots have locked up both their young tight ends to long-term extensions after reaching agreement with Aaron Hernandez on a deal through 2018, sources told ESPN.com on Monday.

A league source said the extension is for five years and includes a $12.5 million signing bonus, $16 million in guaranteed money, and a maximum value of $40 million in additional money.

The source said the contract would start after his rookie deal ends in two years.

This. This times eleventy billion.

Embroiled in the investigation of the shooting death of a man near his Massachusetts home this week, New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez also is the subject of a civil lawsuit alleging he shot a Connecticut man in February, according to court records.

Odin Lloyd, 27, was found dead Monday evening about a mile from Hernandez's sprawling house in an upscale subdivision in North Attleborough, Mass. Lloyd was shot, sources told ABC News.

Lloyd's body was discovered in a clearing near John Dietsch Boulevard, not far from a vehicle that had been rented by Hernandez. Police have ruled Lloyd's death a homicide.

Police say that Lloyd was a linebacker for the Boston Bandits, a semi-pro football team, was dating the sister of Hernandez's girlfriend, and that police are trying to reach the sister because they are concerned about her safety. Lloyd's family says he had connections to Hernandez but hasn't elaborated.

At least seven state troopers on Wednesday searched both sides of a road just off the street where Hernandez lives. The officers used thin poles to pull back plants and search through undergrowth along the road two days after a body was found about a mile away.

Police, who searched Hernandez's home Tuesday night, executed a search warrant Wednesday for an Enterprise rental car that was leased by Hernandez. That was the car near Lloyd's body.

Police are asking for the public's help in locating a silver mirror cover believed to have been broken off a vehicle and might be visible along a route of travel between Dorchester, where Lloyd was from, and North Attleborough.

Hernandez returned home Wednesday afternoon, declining to speak to media members.

"It has been widely reported in the media that the state police have searched the home of our client, Aaron Hernandez, as part of an ongoing investigation," read a statement from Michael Fee, an attorney at Ropes & Gray. "Out of respect for that process, neither we nor Aaron will have any comment about the substance of that investigation until it has come to a conclusion."

The NFL is not commenting on the Hernandez situation at this point, a league official told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. But the NFL is monitoring developments, as it would in any matter of this nature.

Alexander S. Bradley, the man who claims he was shot by Hernandez after the two argued upon leaving a Miami nightclub in February, is represented by New York attorney David Jaroslawicz.

Jaroslawicz filed a personal-injury lawsuit on behalf of his client, but that the suit was withdrawn because of an inaccuracy. A corrected version was refiled in Florida federal court Thursday morning, Jaroslawicz said.

Jaroslawicz said his client has been a friend of Hernandez for several years. The lawyer said Bradley spent several weeks being treated at a hospital and has endured several operations with even more necessary to repair damage from the gunshot wound.

The original lawsuit, Jaroslawicz said, alleged that Hernandez shot Bradley in the face. The refiling contends that Bradley was shot in the arm, but the bullet traveled into his head and caused damage there, including the loss of his right eye. According to the suit, the two had an argument in a strip club and later, in the car, Hernandez pointed a gun at Bradley. The gun went off and Bradley was hit.

IIRC, the Cowboys would have a barber come to the locker room once or twice a week. A rookie/younger player was in the chair and Irvin demanded he get up and let him go ahead, being a vet and all.

Words are exchanged, young guy refuses - so Irvin grabs a pair of barber shears and stabs the guy in the neck.

Police are back at the home of New England Patriot's tight end Aaron Hernandez today with another warrant based on evidence that "he destroyed his home security system,'' an investigator close to the case told ABC News.

The investigator, and other law enforcement sources, confirmed that the security system - which included video surveillance - was smashed intentionally.

And a cell phone used by Hernandez was handed over to investigators "in pieces'' by his attorneys, the sources said.

Police also want to know why a team of house cleaners were hired on Monday to scrub Hernandez's mansion, sources told ABC News.

The group then left the club, and while driving towards Palm Beach, Hernandez's gun discharged inside the vehicle. "It fired, and a bullet went through my client's arm and blew out his right eye," attorney David Jaroslawicz told ABCNews.com. "It has been enucleated -- replaced with a prosthetic eye. He has also lost use of his right arm."

I doubt it and the only reason I say that is the NFL player is hard to convict on just about anything.

Yep. Aaron Hernandez is going to prison.

Never underestimate the stupidity of the American juror.

It's reached the point these days where it's almost impossible to get a murder to stick without a forensic evidence. People watch so damn much CSI that they figure "well shit, if there's no DNA, there's no crime..."

Nevermind the fact that virtually every study ever done on the reliability of evidence indicates that circumstantial cases are every bit as strong as cases based on direct evidence, juries still won't convict on them.

The cleaning company, busted phone and busted surveillance are all going to be flat out ignored by the jury 99 times out of 100.

Juries are just extremely stupid when they are asked to determine what amounts to 'reasonable' doubt. It's like every last one of them becomes the guy in the Chappelle skit.

He did. "Police also want to know why a team of house cleaners were hired on Monday to scrub Hernandez's mansion, sources told ABC News."

"Jenkins' sister, Shanea Jenkins, was dating Lloyd, who played for the semi-pro football team Boston Bandits, several law enforcement sources told ABC News.

Shanea Jenkins could not be found in the aftermath of her boyfriend's murder, and investigators were concerned for her safety. Police were able to locate her Wednesday, the sources said.

Investigators have also searched three Enterprise rental cars that were registered to the NFL star, including one that had its silver mirror knocked off. That vehicle, sources said, was recovered at an Enterprise location in Boston Wednesday, a day after police issued a BOLO [Be On The Lookout] for it. The sources said it had been dropped off abruptly sometime Tuesday with the broken mirror.

Another rental vehicle was recovered not far from Lloyd's body. A third rental was stopped from pulling out of Hernandez's driveway Tuesday by state police and its two occupants were questioned and released. Police were seen searching that car Tuesday night.

In another development in the case, ABC News has learned from investigative sources that Hernandez had partied with Lloyd at a Boston nightclub Friday night into Saturday morning. Police reviewed surveillance video Wednesday that was taken at that club."

Reports about Hernandez background piling up
Posted by Darin Gantt on June 20, 2013, 2:55 PM EDT

With more and more reports about Aaron Hernandez’s potential involvement in a murder investigation, the stories about his previous brushes with the law are only building.

And with everyone looking, anything he’s done is bound to come out.

Sports Illustrated mentioned that several NFL teams were concerned about potential gang related activity by some of Hernandez’s associates prior to the draft. That talk, even if it never advanced beyond rumors, likely contributed to his draft stock falling as much or more than reported failed drug tests in college.

Now, there’s another report that he was connected to a shooting in Florida while he was in college, though no charges were filed.

According to Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel, Hernandez and three other Gators players were questioned about a shooting the night after a 2007 game. He refused to comment on it while he was a student.

That report also notes a juvenile arrest for an altercation at campus hangout called The Swamp, for which he received deferred prosecution.

Neither of those incidents necessarily have anything to do with his current situation.

But they add brushstrokes to the portrait of a player that’s looking much different than it looked a week ago.

Yeah, the dozens of hours they're about to spend being deposed for free is going to make the hourly rate they charged to clean that house look pretty shitty.

errr...sounds like Hernandez is a moronic fuckhead who is deservedly going to spend some time in jail. I root for the uniform, but if the jackass wearing it is a disgrace to society, which Hernandez seems to be, then it's time to root for someone ELSE to wear that uniform instead of that guy.

And how good or bad he is on the field doesn't have a damn thing to do with it. It's a damn shame that a 23 year old kid who had the world at his feet seems to have f'ed up so bad, but that's not an excuse. He's a grown man who is probably going to spend most/all of his playing years playing football in the prison yard.

How did NE cover up the lawsuit? Hernandez was never talked to during the Feb incident because the guy told police it was somebody else he didn't know. He is not mentioned in a police report or anything else until the lawsuit was filed June 13th.

You are saying the Pats covered up a lawsuit filed in federal court? They are bad-asses.

Furthermore what were the Chiefs supposed to tell the public before Belcher went ape shit? Just because the team knows stuff doesnt mean they are required to announce it to the public. Thats not covering things up as you claimed.

http://boston.cbslocal.com/2013/06/21/source-arrest-warrant-issued-for-aaron-hernandez/

BOSTON (CBS) – Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez will be charged in connection with the shooting death of a 27-year-old Dorchester man, a law enforcement source told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 on Friday.

According to that source, an arrest warrant has been issued on a charge of obstruction of justice.

It is expected that State Police will be responsible for arresting Hernandez, but it is not yet clear when and where Hernandez was going to be arrested.

The source added that it is possible that charges could eventually be upgraded.

The body of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd of Dorchester was found Monday in a field in North Attleboro, about half-a-mile from Hernandez’s home. He had been shot in the head.

Lloyd was driving an SUV that had been rented in the name of Hernandez and was dating a woman who is the sister of Hernandez’s fiancee.

Read: Hernandez Investigation Coverage

At first, Hernandez was said to be cooperating with investigators but police sources said he stopped talking to police after he hired the Boston law firm of Ropes and Gray.

Earlier this week, a lawsuit was filed in Florida, accusing Hernandez of shooting a man in the face after an altercation at a strip club.
