View Full Version : Life Car people of CP... I need a new car.

My Focus SVT's transmission just bit the dust and I am tired of putting money into this damn car. Gonna buy a new one and drive that fucker off the lot.

I would prefer a 2 door car. Hatch is a plus.
I need the car to be sporty/fast as I do autocross.
Manual gearbox.
Around 25k to spend or so.
No GM products.

Suggestions?

If I can find one with a working Mr. Fusion... I'll buy it. That said, non fusion powered DeLorean's are slow as snails.

He could never go over 88 when doing auto cross. Unless he really wants to go to prom with his mother.

That v6 is basically unmoddable and expensive.

That 2.0 TURBO needs just a little massaging and it could be a firebreathing monster, capable of sub 12 second quarter mile times and blistering fast laps around a track.

Or, do like I said and gut that WRX. My WRX made 362 WHEEL horsepower (something like 450 for you factory HP types) with just a little baby 2.0 turbo motor. And no, that's not a wind up toy Honda, this made that power at 4k rpms and held it and 300+ foot pounds of torque across redline.

Now they make even more HP and torque with same mods, because they are all packing the 2.5 liter.

For the LOVE of god dont pick a FWD car

No offense but you're kinda doing this backwards. You said you want to autoX, what class do you want to run in? Street prepared, stock, modified, etc? Also do you want to be competitive?

I would say go here

http://www.scca.com/solo/content.cfm?cid=44517

Look at the 2013 stock classifications and see which cars are in which class and what you want to run in. i.e.

http://www.scca.com/assets/2013%20Stock%20by%20manufacturer%205-17.pdf

Then if you're still deciding you can ask people what they think of the cars you're looking at.

I would most certainly be running in a stock class. Also, the purpose of a race is to come in first... no? Of course I want to be competitive! lol

Aside from it being stock, I don't much care class (a,b,c...) I'm in.

Honestly I've been too far out of Autocross to be up to date(I still own my S2K though), but the reason I ask is that some classes are dominated by one type of car or not and if you want to be competitive in that class you want to look at that type of car. It depends upon how serious your local is 'cause it may not matter as much.

I'm sure the BRZ/FRS is really popular I just don't know how much of a pain is is to get one since they are popular overall. Unfortunately we have a real dearth of new 'sports' cars lately. If you want new the selections might be a bit thin.

CrazyPhuD
06-20-2013, 07:33 PM
One other point to everyone else. For autocross, raw power isn't always the best. Some of the best autoX cars are quick and well balanced but may not have a ton of raw power.

Take the GTO mentioned earlier, I like the car and think it can be made into a pretty decent track car but for autocross I don't think it works...too heavy even with the fun power.

That said the GTO is coming back...it's the Holden, and it's coming back as the Chevy SS.

You have a few options here:

All in one vehicle solution WRX, hatch if you're smart.

Or FWD options Fiesta/focus ST, GTI (heavy/slow), Mazdaspeed 3, Mini.

Or RWD with Daily Driver combo S2000 (the only option), Miata (if gay), 350z (heavy/slow), RX8 (perfect car but tard engine).

I know your tastes from past threads, I just saved you a billion hours. Pick from above and find a stellar example.

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2024966

Seems to be a wash, you pay a very hefty premium for sti vs wrx, hard to justify the cost imo plus I think every STI has been beat on vs probably 60-80% of the rexs.

Notice the common theme of "scared of the S2000s" :)

Can you afford the STi model? If so.. DO IT. You'll thank me later. I've modded my 05 Imprexa Wrx Sti to death. Fast as fuck in the 1/4 mile and I love doing autocross in it. Not a better car out there as far as driving inthe snow. Even stock they are quick cars.

Just my two cents bro, as a former credit manager. Buy a car that is a year or two old. Let someone else take the depreciation hit on "brand new". Never pay interest on a depreciating asset. I mean, you're going too, but don't get double dipped on a brand new vehicle. Do that shit when you're retired. Getting off my soapbox now.

P.S - I walked that line. I have wanted a newer Mustang for a while now, finally bit the bullet and bought an 08 with low miles. Got it for a song. The guy who bought it got all the bells and whistles and his loss is my gain. Be wise.

350Z(used)
G35(used)
BRZ
FRS
Focus ST
2004 Cobra (used but the best investment of all of them)

You could ALMOST stick a newerish Mustang GT in there with the new 5.0 Coyote Motor and a 6 speed manual :D

But you'd probably need about 26-29 for a 2012/13ish model.

If you get a mustang, don't get a 2005-2010 models. Wait for the 2011+ with the 5.0 Coyote in them, trust me, you'll want to spend that little bit extra for 100 HP.

Pretty solid advice for most vehicles, however there are a few exceptions where due to ridiculous resale values you might as well buy the damn thing new.

At least in Colorado, you're better off buying basically any Subie (especially WRX so you know it isn't beat), Wranglers, Tacomas, and Honda Fits brand new. This can soften at the 5 year old or 50k mile mark, but if you're going 2 years or less you might as well pony up for a new one.

I'd be careful with the FRS/BRZ twins. The stealerships have been marking them up like crazy, and a lot of these first gen models are having reports of issue with fit and finish(i.e. rattling, taillights having condensation inside being built up). They are also very low in torque and require you to really bump up the RPM's to stay in the sweet spot, with the car not being as fast as it looks. That being said, it has often times been said to be one of the most fun cars to drive, with the point and shoot steering, minimal body roll, ect, with a rewarding gearbox. But it is a really small car, and you have to be sold on the fun to drive factor, not straight line speed or practicality.

They list above that. Go to cars.com or something similar. Fill out the send me a quote shit. Put the max price you are willing to pay in there and say the first dealership to beat it gets your business.

Mine was listed at $25k. Put in the email that I wouldn't spend more than $23k. 36 hours later I was signing paperwork at a dealership for $22,895.

Edit: the tech package adds $1500. Tell them you want a non-tech package one. The tech package was needed on 2012s and before but for the 2013 it is unnecessary unless you want an ugly ass touchscreen in the middle of your dash, blind spot monitoring (just pay attention), and a rear view mirror with lights (blah)

He's planning on getting a WRX . . . That's certainly not NA. If the turbos are tunes right, there's no issue with lag, which is the main reason to avoid them on an auto-x circuit.

The dominance of the NA and NB Miata was due to how much better they are than the competition and not necessarily any inherent advantage because of a lack of a turbo.

Does that apply to buying Harley Davidson motorcycles? The reason I'm asking is that in a couple of years I am considering selling or trading in my 05 for a new bike. I know HDs hold their value fairly well but all motor vehicles depreciate.

The way I look at it is anytime you buy, it shouldn't be new. Even if you plan to drive the wheels off of it. Throw in paying interest at any level, and you're getting double dipped. If you're willing to keep the thing for years and years and years, at least you're getting your money out of it.

Buying low miles and a year or two old will save you a lot of coin in my opinion, but ultimately it's your money and there's something about owning it from "birth" if you will. JMO, it's not golden or anything. Just my financial logic.
