Cleveland Browns Rookie Faces Attempted Murder Charge in NJ Nightclub Punch

Ausar Walcott turned himself in to Passaic police
Wednesday, Jun 26, 2013 | Updated 11:12 AM EDT

A Cleveland Browns rookie is charged with attempted murder for allegedly punching a man outside a club in northern New Jersey.

Ausar Walcott turned himself in to Passaic police Tuesday after he was identified as a suspect in the incident that happened around 3 a.m. Sunday.

Authorities tell The Record newspaper the 23-year-old Hackensack native and former University of Virginia player punched 24-year-old Derrick Jones in the head just after The Palace Gentlemen's Club closed.

Police say Jones, who is from New York City, is in critical condition.

Walcott is held on $500,000 bail. It's not clear if he has a defense lawyer.

The linebacker was signed by the Browns last month. In a statement, the team says it is "aware of the situation."

well if you were to punch someone and he dies from it would that not be murder? Only if it wasn't self defense.

They can charge with manslaughter, I believe. Murder is premeditated and most likely doesn't apply here.

You can definitely die from punches, especially to the back of the head.

Additionally, when you participate in a fight in an urban environment (e.g. a bar), you run the risk of that person hitting an object after the punch and potentially causing more trauma than a singular blow would have.

Yup. Happened to a guy in Westport a few years ago. The guy who did it was found not guilty.

Manslaughter or attempted manslaughter is likely what this is reduced to.

Everyone who is surprised by the murder charge might want to wait to hear the facts. If the suspect sucker punched or, even worse, punched the guy whilst not provoked, it would certainly fit a reckless homicide charge.

I know a ton of people I don't like.

I have a very short list of people I'd actually like to harm physically. People I know I'll never hit but would love a good reason to.

There are probably only about 3 people that if God him/herself came down and gave me a free pass to kill anyone in the world and have a free pass I'd consider.

That said, If I won $20 mil in the lottery (meaning I'd likely only see $5 mil at best over 20 years) I wouldn't give a fat rat's fuck about any of them.

Any anger or even the small bit of strong hatred I have would be completely gone that day. Anything that might have happened that once ticked me off is completely irrelevant now.

You have the Rick James card.

What could possibly happen to make you give that up?...

Thats not what he's been charged with "Police have charged Walcott with first-degree attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault and third-degree endangering an injured victim. The undrafted free agent from Virginia had his bail set at $500,000."

I wonder if he punched or kicked the guy again once he was down?

He must have, as well as waited for him to leave to get the murder 1.
