Yeah, someone might want to explain "sample size" to Dayton Moore and Yost. I realize that the latter sets the lineup, but the former must be able to override stupidity, and is thus ultimately responsible for this nonsense.

Hi, I'm Ned Yost, and if there is one thing I cherish in life it's variety. Change. Gotta love it. Change for the sake of change is the best kind when you get down to it. Something working for ya? Change it! You need the drama in your life. It keeps you young, keeps that anxiety level up, doesn't let you get too far ahead ....well in some cases it doesn't let you get ahead at all. Just look at my record as the Royals Manager! Do you know that in 82 games I have only had the same lineup maybe 5 times. Now that's change we can all get behind. I can't risk my players getting settled into a role and give the time to adjust and understand things. No Sir! That leads to things like consistency and we just can't have that. And we all know, if you can't be consistent at the top, there is no way to be consistent at the bottom.

I'm Ned Yost, your KC Royals Manager!

He gave up 4 runs in 5 innings last start, but I don't know all the circumstances of that. He didn't walk anybody, which is good. He walked 8 in his first 10 IP, but only 3 in his last 16. And prior to his last start, he given up 0 ER in 10.2 IP.

Mendoza is definitely the weak link in the rotation. I never have high hopes for a win when he pitches. I don't understand why Chen doesn't get a spot stat from time to time. I think it would be a good change of pace for the rotation. Crafty lefty as opposed to hard throwers everyday.

Nope. He's not "a bit" off his season last year, he's WAY below it. He's a woeful 109th out of 158 qualifiers in slugging %. Last year? 20th of 143:
http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=2013&month=0&season1=2013&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=16%2cd

So no, he's not even close to last year's totals. As for the comment about lack of protection, Bill James has already debunked this myth. Even if it was true, it doesn't apply to BIlly as he didn't have any better protection last year anyway.

gblowfish
07-07-2013, 04:04 PM
Well, in the case of Billy, yes, his power has been down. But the season isn't quite half over yet. Let's see what he does in the second half. His walks are way up too, because teams have been pitching around him.

No fucking way. The sample size that you're basing your analysis off of is way too small. He's been a shit hitter for the majority of his career.

gblowfish
07-07-2013, 04:20 PM
I think Billy has been more selective at the plate. And after he made the All Star team last year, the AL has pitched to him with more care. Also, since all the guys that got plugged in after him during Ned's lineup juggling -Frenchy, Salvy, Moose, Hos, whoever, they've pitched around him a lot because our number five guy had been a big question mark for most of the first half. Now that Salvy has been left usually at #5, that should help Billy see more hittable pitches. Hosmer's starting to hit in the #3 hole, and that will help too.

I just think that our offense should be better in the second half. I sure hope it will be, because I doubt our pitching will be able to be as good as the dog days wear on.

Exactly. Voice of reason. If and when we make the playoffs, Billay will be long gone. Royals had to sign him to a contract or fans would have burned down the stadium. They were so sick and tired of seeing our players going to the Yankees or any other legitimate team. Just sucks that the player they decided to "send a message to the fans" is an unathletic DH.

Yea, I think that's what bugs me about Butler. A guy with no speed and limited athletic ability should be hitting with more power. A base cleaner, instead of a clogger. He needs to sacrifice his average some and swing for the fences more. Looks like Harmon Kilabrew, swings like Rod Carew. It doesn't add up.

thebrad84
07-07-2013, 10:13 PM
I will never have respect for Billy Butler. Dude gets paid millions of dollars to play a sport and he can't even put in the extra effort to lean up and build muscle instead of fat. How freaking easy would it be for someone to do that when they have a personal trainer and nutritionist/chef at their disposal. You see actors do it all the time for certain characters they play (i.e. Christian Bale in batman, right after the dude starved himself for The Machinist).
