This is the time of year NFL front offices worry the most about players.

But those front offices aren’t exempt from the concern, either.

According to CBS4 in Denver, Broncos director of player personnel Matt Russell was arrested and jailed over the weekend on charges including DUI and crashing into a police car.

According to the report, Russell was involved in an accident in the town of Frisco, and then crashed into a police car in the nearby town of Breckenridge. An officer who was in the car was hospitalized with what was described as minor injuries.

“Any time anybody is impaired and hits a fully-marked police car that person should not have been driving in the first place,” said Colorado State Trooper Nate Reid. “It’s a dangerous profession.”

Russell was charged with driving under the influence, careless driving resulting in injury, having an open container of alcohol in his car, and failure to display proof of insurance.

Russell was released on a $1,000 bond Sunday.

The former linebacker was viewed as John Elway’s heir apparent on the personnel side of the organization, and they even blocked the Chargers from interviewing him for their General Manager position this offseason.

You could argue that they wouldn't be the best player at their position on KC's roster. Bowe would be a beast with Manning throwing him the ball and IMO he is better than DT. Manning also makes Clady look better and I would take Albert over him.

KnowMo just can't quit us. He left me this little rep comment for the Division by Division All-Star Team thread:

"They left off Trindon Holliday, John Fox, and Wolfe. The Chiefs may have a bunch of above average players but nobody except Charles is a difference maker. Manning, DT, Holliday, Von, Champ and Clady are ELITE at their positions".

Let's be honest, Thomas and Clady are probably above average to good players that appear to be great to elite with Peyton fucking Manning under center. Champ, although he's had one of the best CB careers to date, has lost a step and should probably move his bum ass over to safety. I will admit Manning and Von Miller are fucking nasty though. They are truly elite, no question.

I find it funny that Von completely disappeared during last years playoff game against the Ravens though. Difference maker my ass.

I haven't read through all this, but the quote here made me chuckle a bit.

What is the supporting evidence for this comment?

A quick look at Denver's 2013 schedule, I'll throw this out as the worst case scenario - and I'll project a split with AFCW teams just for giggles. So, that's 3-3 ... but I really think it will be 4-2 worst case, but let's say 3-3.

Ravens, @ Giants, Eagles, @ Cowboys, Jaguars, @ Colts, Redskins, @ Patriots, Titans, @ Texans ...

Worst case ... that's 9 wins (3-3 division), 10 wins using my (4-2 divisional comment). I think the Giants and Colts are strong matchups and Denver can win those too, but both teams are talented and they are away games - much like WAS in Denver and @ HOU ... it's a tough schedule. They won't be 13-3... but 10-11 wins is a good season and that will win the AFCW.

I think KC will be improved... but 11 or more wins? I don't see it, not saying it can't happen, but I don't see it. They'll need a hell of a turn around and a catastrophic failure in Denver. The only real difference in the schedules with our two teams ... Denver plays the Ravens and Patriots while KC plays the Browns and Bills. That's not enough to change the dynamics.

Regarding the guy with the DUI ... he made a dumb decision, if it cost him his job, so be it. I'm losing no sleep on that one.

Annnnnnnddddddddd.....a SECOND Broncos exec has been arrested for DUI:

http://pro32.ap.org/article/apnewsbreak-2nd-broncos-exec-facing-dui-charges

Broncos director of pro personnel Tom Heckert was charged with DUI in Douglas County, Colo. on June 11.

Heckert served as the Browns' GM from 2010-12. The news comes just two days after Broncos director of player personnel Matt Russell was busted for drunk driving. Both executives will be facing league-mandated discipline in addition to whatever the law decides. It's a bad, bad look for the Broncos, who have called the situation "extremely upsetting."

The other factor, is the chip on the shoulder. I have no doubt whatsoever that the team will be more aggressive and fired-up under Reid. As long as the offense doesn't destroy the defense's resolve, they should start to feed off of each other nicely. I put no stock in the preseason, because they will be trying some things out and fine-tuning the whole show.
That said, I do believe that Jacksonville is about to get the ass-whipping of it's miserable existence come opening day.

All shit talking aside, I would think KC almost has to improve. They can't be as bad as they were last season. Even if Smith is no better than an improved Mark Asshole, at the very least you have an improved Mark Asshole. And he sucked. I mean, he really fucking sucked. As in "destroy your team" sucked. Add in the fact that Reid is, I think, substantially more aggressive on Offense (maybe Defense) than any HC you've had since Haley was actually trying to win games and maybe you've got something. I don't know what that something is. I doubt that it's 11-13 wins. But it's got to be better than that joke of a team you guys had last year.

I see them tripling their wins from last season. They certainly won't be starting out 8-1, though.

Agreed... KC is only 3 seasons from having 10 wins, but much has changed. I think that for the last 8 years, there has been at least one team go from last place in their division to first place. So, it's not impossible, but it's not likely that KC will be that team in 2013. Denver would have to crater in order for that to happen.

SD has the chance to hover in that 7-9 win range. OAK ... who knows, but they could play spoiler in a few games. Either way, I wouldn't be shocked with divisional splits by every team in the AFCW.

At this point, I definitely see Denver being in the best position to pass 10 wins and win the division. I see KC coming in second... there could be as few as 2-3 games difference between the two teams, but my guess is that the gap will be 3-4. Again - barring major injuries, anything can happen and completely change the dynamics and then all bets are off.

I also put very little into preseason wins and losses... teams are tinkering with new players and rarely playing the stars.

There's no doubt that Smith is an upgrade at QB and at CB, KC has good depth. But, is he enough?

Smith has 6.5 years of starting experience and overall is 38-36-1 ... not stellar. Smith only has 1 season with greater than 2,900 yds passing and that was 2011 when they won 13 games.

Smith is a bit of a caretaker QB... he'll have some bright spots, he likely won't make brain dead decisions that cost you games, but he also likely won't put the team on his back and carry them - he really hasn't done it ever. Overall, he's the 3rd best QB in the division... nothing wrong with that, but they really need players around him to step up, he's not necessarily going to raise the game and effort of those around him.

Strong ground game and top notch defense is why SF won those games and you saw them take it to another level when they replaced Smith late last season.

Questions - is the DLINE sound? WR depth behind Bowe seems spotty and inconsistent. TE - Fasano... doesn't do much for me.

I think the following teams are going to give KC fits:
Broncos (2), Cowboys, Texans, Colts, Redskins, Eagles ... I don't know that the early trip to PHI is going to be a fun one for Reid, they'll be ready.

LoneWolf
07-10-2013, 02:12 PM

I don't see Oakland winning more than 3 games and I doubt they even manage that. As far as SD I don't see them rallying late in the year like they use to under Forsekin-Head. And as far as head to head it seems like Rivers always makes huge blunders vs. KC.

Denver probably 11-5 but mostly due to that tough schedule. They'll be a better team this year with a worse record.

I think KC should finish in that 7-9 to 9-7 range. We play some really horrible teams this year and even more with garbage defenses.

I think the following teams are going to give KC fits:
Broncos (2), Cowboys, Texans, Colts, Redskins, Eagles ... I don't know that the early trip to PHI is going to be a fun one for Reid, they'll be ready.

I don't expect a lot of surprises. I expect us to beat most of the teams we should and lose to most who are favored.

They cowboys are inconsistent. It wouldn't shock be to see them win or lose any game of the year.

I think the Texans, Redskins, and Broncos will murder us. Not even close games there.

The Colts haven't done enough on defense to worry me. We had no QB play last year, gashed them for 300 on the ground, and should have won that game.

I think Andy really wants that Eagles win and will get it.

Those are some ugly numbers. I was looking for a chart to show how BAC relates to behavior/health. I dug through a bunch of impaired driving charts, but I don't think they really hit you with how bad those numbers are. I did find this:

I don't see Oakland winning more than 3 games and I doubt they even manage that. As far as SD I don't see them rallying late in the year like they use to under Forsekin-Head. And as far as head to head it seems like Rivers always makes huge blunders vs. KC.

Denver probably 11-5 but mostly due to that tough schedule. They'll be a better team this year with a worse record.

I think KC should finish in that 7-9 to 9-7 range. We play some really horrible teams this year and even more with garbage defenses.

Respect for a well reasoned post.

Our schedule is pretty much exactly the same as it was last year. Our three toughest games this year will be NE, Bal, and Houston, and we played them last year, but this year we won't have to play Atlanta. I could see us going anywhere from 12-4 to 16-0.

What offense on our schedule can keep up with us? NE, without Hernandez and Welker and with an injury prone Gronk and Amendola? No. Their defense isn't as good as ours either.

The game at Houston on week 16 is the only one that looks difficult to me. This is the first year in a long time where I honestly checked "W" after every game, the Houston game did give me pause though.

Not many.

We play patty-cake for the first 6 weeks and the NFL decided to lob us another slow-ball by making 7 of our last 8 division games.

Leading an 80 yard drive to give us a 7 point lead with 2 minutes to go isn't choking. Quite the opposite. We win that game 99 times out of 100 under those same exact circumstances.

10-11 wins is a possibility

So, if the best Denver can do is also a possibility for KC, you must think KC will be at least as good as Denver.

If he doesn't throw the pick six earlier in the game, the 80 yard drive isn't needed. If he doesn't throw the int in overtime to put Baltimore practically in field goal range, maybe Denver wins.

Peyton completely choked in that playoff game and he basically said as much in the post game press conference.

There's no doubt this is an embarrasing sting of events from people up the food chain... but as far as how that impacts the product on the field, it's incredibly negligible. Suspend 'em, fire 'em, move on... there are others to fill those spots.
