View Full Version : Life Goodbye, Dane McCloud lifestyle. I'm moving to San Francisco!

Well gang, after spending every minute of my breathing life as a resident of Los Angeles I'm loading up the VW bus and moving to an even more expensive city - San Francisco! Land of Rice-a-Roni, cable cars and 2013 SuperBowl participants the 49ers.
Any CPers up there? We can get together for a game or risk our lives watching the Chiefs in Oakland.

I don't advertise but I live in the area. Raiders games are cool I've been to a couple, it is nuts. Raiders fans are probably more likely to fight with each other than any one else. It was funny one year I went to the OAK/KC game in both OAK and KC the differences in how the fans treat the other teams fans in the stadiums was night and day. I would say don't wear a chiefs jersey unless you want pain lol. In KC they would rib the raiders fans but it was pretty good natured....in oakland.....ROFL....yea just don't wear a jersey unless you go in a group of friends...the bigger the better.

Strangely some of the most violent fights are games between the niners and the raiders....and the niners fans are as big or bigger thugs than the raiders fans.

If you had shown up last weekend you could have gotten to see SF in all it's glory at the pride parade! ROFL

San Fran is fun as hell, but goddamn there are some crazy motherfuckers in that city. Downtown SF was weirder than Brooklyn, Philly, Chicago, or anywhere else I've been.

Oh, and people in the SF area seem to be okay with toking just about anywhere.. basketball courts, cars, outside restaurants. That was pretty bizarre, but I didn't really mind.

Sadly, the gay community is way outnumbered by the douchebags now. It is some sort of toxic waste left over from the nineties dot com thing, and it boils up every 5 or 6 years.

Congrats! It is a great city. I lived in both the city and the east bay for a while. Chiefs watching is scarce and like most cities you will have to contend with Steelers fans who seem to have every bar staked out, but post if you do a meet up for a game, I am up there alot in the fall for work. Enjoy the burritos.

Agreed

I lived at Telegraph Landing on Sansome St in SF from 1996 to 1999 and then moved to Mountain View. I loved SF and you won't need a car

The Bus Stop Saloon in Cow Hollow/Marina district for all the games

Marina District park to people watch

Great places to eat:
Boulevard-great chops usually veal or lamb
Zuni Cafe-fun California fusion
Fleur De Lys-excellent and unique French
Il Fornaio-Italian
Yank Sing or Ton Kiang-Dim Sum

A ride to Half Moon Bay and then all the way through La Honda on Rt 84

Golf Courses like Harding Park and the other 200 within 30 miles

San Francisco is 10x's better than L.A.

I moved last week to the West side of skyline to a 30 acre ranch. We are putting a motocross track on the property. Absolute heaven. There are not many places in the world where you can work in a financial epicenter like SF and within an hour be in complete beauty and tranquility. My neighbors are very famous so getting in and out is a little pain but I love it. The isolation is great. You don't even know you have neighbors.

My honeymoon was in San Fran. First time I had ever been openly propositioned by a gay guy was 24 hours after I was married. This guy came up to me in a T-Shirt shop in Fisherman's Wharf and said "Oooh....I have just your size!" I said "I beg your pardon?" He said "Let's go for a ride in my Porsche..." I looked at my new wife and said "Well, I've always wanted to ride in a Porsche!"

Yea I am very stoked. The best thing is getting my wife and son back. Little man freaked every time I left for 3 years, never again. This morning I rode my motorcycle out in the dark. On skyline the last 2 miles to 92 give you a panoramic view of the ocean and of the valley. Clouds were low on both sides as the sun rose and just the peaks of the mountains were sticking out. It was like heaven. I don't think most people know just how beautiful parts of the bay area are. I don't ever want to leave but may still end up in the Applegate valley in Southern Oregon one of these days.

Five facts you never knew about San Francisco.

1. It's named after Saint Frank, the patron saint of cured meats.

2. The city is built atop a giant elephant, who in turn stands atop a giant tortoise.

3. There are no gay people in San Francisco. The city developed its image to attract the lucrative LGBT tourist market segment.

4. The city has a vibrant Muslim population, with thousands each year making a pilgrimage to the al Capone site near al Catraz.

5. There are more Chinese people with degrees from UC-Berkeley or Stanford in San Francisco than there are in China.

You would probably dig any of the beach cities, from Venice to Redondo to Long Beach, Seal Beach, Newport, Huntington, etc.

If I could afford to live anywhere, right now, it would be the Pacific Palisades, just above the PCH. But I'm about $2 million short for the pad I need.

What the fuck? Seriously?

Are you still running your own biz? If so, I'm sure it would be a pretty smooth transition. One of my best friends just moved his biz to Cali with no issues.

Suffice to say, he's loving it here.

I am - going strong still. It may be worth looking into after a few more years. I look back and it's hard to believe we've been going for over 3 years now. I'd almost HAVE to have a climate controlled truck bed for the gear. I don't even know if companies offer that, I'd imagine there would have to be an outfit that'd offer that service.

No, that's not true. But, yeah, the traffic can be really silly (even as a visitor). I once left downtown LA heading to Carlsbad at 3:30pm and didn't get down there until 7:30pm. I wanted to kill everyone. I couldn't live there.

Nice!

I too am moving to the bay Area very soon. We definitely need to get a crew together and claim a bar for Chiefs games!

I work from home. My kids school is 3 minutes away and I only have to go through my neighborhood.

Rush hour sucks but outside of that, it's fine. I've been here for 20 years so it doesn't bother me.

Dane, I thought you were in TV... are you an editor?

I had a nice visit to Springfield early last week. I hadn't seen downtown in 25 years. It's a really nice area now. I've always liked Springfield.

TeeDubzzz...awesome man. there is even an underground standup comedy scene out here, apparently.

Let me know when you're coming out, if you are in the city we should hang. I am staying in a shitty one-room over a noisy cable car route in Nob Hill. it's brutal for trying to sleep, but I take a cable car to work each morning -- not too shabby.

Thanks Dane & TinyE... I've done comedy only once in SF.

Is it a shitty one-room, that's like $1800 a month? LOL. Use some earplugs. :-D

I'm out there next Friday for the final 4 rounds of interviews... been through 5, so far.

Ouch but for that area probably about right. Rent control....it's great if people have lived someplace for a while but totally fucks people moving in.

yes you usually need to do the landlord's dishes every night to get that good of a rate.

(but I would say probably doesn't include electric but likely does include water and may or may not include heating).

Yes. It's an AirBnB rental for a month. Biggest disappointment was no wi-fi in the room ("wifi in building" means it's in the lobby. FUUUUUUU!) and no bike allowed in building (was expecting to drive up next week with bike so I could ride. FUUUUUUU#2!

Holy Shit... I haven't even looked up in SF for a place to live... I'm looking in South Bay... maybe rent a room for a couple of months, until I find the right place to move the family.

I can pick up an extra $4k a month in consulting, no problem... but still, that's fucking outrageous. I could live in Lakewood or Lake Winnebago here in Lee's Summit for that much... with a fucking lake house and dock, w/ a pontoon. In SF, you get a ROOM.

My mortgage now is $940 for 1800sq ft. LOL.

Check out http://yourkarma.com and you can get a 4G hotspot that works pretty well for $14/Gb. Not ideal, but if you share, you get free data. So, it may work for you for a month-ish.

Welcome to the cost of living in CA(especially the metro areas). You probably don't want to look at real estate costs.....

Mountain View is great-lived there from 98-02.

Shoreline Ampitheater is great

The Tied House brew pub has fantastic beers

Location is fantastic. If you have time and play golf, head south on 85 to Cinnabar Hills
http://cinnabarhills.com/

Awesome course and not a house to be found anywhere. major elevation changes and wildlife everywhere. Always in excellent condition.

Good luck and I'm jealous!

I lived there for 23 years but now live in Overland Park. I still travel frequently there for business. Real estate is crazy expensive again and probably harder to buy a house now because of all the damn foreign investors jacking the prices up. Traffic is bad, but not quite LA bad. Are you going to live in SF or the burbs?

I've heard that San Francisco has some of the best Applebee's restaurants in the whole country. You're going to enjoy it.

Unfortunately, that is just a wild ass rumor. The Asians and Hispanics don't know how to make it good mashed potatoes.
