I am selling a vehicle and am wondering what a secure way of accepting payment would be so I don't get scammed by some fake money order...?

I know cash is the safest, but I am not expecting the buyer to show up with $12k in cash...

Don't take anything but cash IMO.

Cashier's checks can be forged.

Aren't a lot of people getting scammed with fake cashiers checks?

What's the difference between a money order and cashiers check?

Cashier's check and wait until it clears or cash.

Option B for me.

Either are the only acceptable options, IMO.

Good luck.

Payment method probably should have been discussed before he drives all the way there.

Have him do a bank transfer into your account ahead of time.

Someone from CL once asked me if they could put $1000 down and complete the rest in payments.

He hasn't left...

He plans on coming this week and is paying to have a mechanic checkit out. I'm thinking ahead and posed the question to him on how he plans on paying for it if he chooses to purchase it.

Not a done deal yet... But want to be prepared in what I will accept for payment when he responds.

Have a rep from your bank deal with a rep from his bank. Exchange no sensitive personal info

PayPal.

Horrible idea, I've run into too many scamers that LOVE paypal. They wait for a week or so after the transaction then dispute the charges with some bogus reason.

Not to mention the fees you'd have to pay on a transaction of that size.

If you're open to online transactions, look into Dwolla (https://www.dwolla.com/). It'll cost you 25c, but that's it.

Otherwise, you could look into an escrow service (https://www.escrow.com/services/vehicle-escrow.aspx) if you REALLY want both sides to be protected.

You will be fine at the bank, Make sure it is a certified check so he can't stop payment or cancel it.
