PGA star Hunter Mahan chose family over work this weekend, and though it may have cost him more than $1 million, he sounds ecstatic.

"What a whirlwind of a day," Mahan tweeted Sunday morning, "but I'm happy to announce the birth of my daughter Zoe Olivia Mahan born at 3:26 am. Thanks for all the support!
"Both Baby and Mom are doing great. Thanks to all to my sponsors who appreciate what's important in life and all my fans for being Awesome!" he added in a second tweet.
Mahan was halfway to his sixth career PGA Tour tournament victory, with a two-shot lead after Friday's second round of the RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ontario.

But after receiving a call early Saturday that his wife, Kandi, had gone into labor, he withdrew from the tournament and flew home to Dallas to be present for the birth of the couple's first child rather than continuing to pursue the $1.008 million first prize.
"Kandi and I are thrilled about this addition to the Mahan family, and we look forward to returning to the RBC Canadian Open in the coming years," Mahan said Saturday, according to PGATOUR.Com.

Mahan has made more than $2.3 million already in 2013, with four Top 10 finishes this year, including a tie for fourth place at the U.S. Open and a tie for ninth place at the British Open over the past two months, PGATOUR.com says.

It's not like a 2-shot lead after 36 holes is insurmountable. If he had walked off the course with a 2-shot lead and 2 holes to play, THAT would be a story.

Put it into terms the average guy can understand... Let's say your wife is giving birth but you're going to have to give up a chance at like $5,000 to be there for her... Would you do it? The $5k is not guaranteed. You could just as easily lose it as bank it.

Depends. HIS situation isn't MY situation.

This is very simple to me. If i had Millions of dollars in my account and the means to make millions more, then i'd probably leave and see the birth.

If I have what's in my account now, then no, i don't leave.

The million dollars will go much further to helping your child than your selfish memory would.

You missed the birth of your child. That's only one day. Now you have the chance to take care of it for the rest of its life and be very well off, being able to afford the best for him/her. That's more valuable to your child and to your family...much more valuable than just YOUR memory.

What about being there for your wife?

When my wife gave birth her mom was in the room, her sister was in the room and her closest friend was in the room with me, with about 10 others waiting outside.

What would she be more thankful for? Me being there for additional support, or having a brand new, fully paid for house to raise our child in?

Quick quiz: Which of the following events would you leave to be with your wife during childbirth? Assume it's the first kid and the first wife. Select all that apply.

A) Final round of a pro golf tournament that you're leading.
B) Giant planetoid crashing into the sun that will be talked about worldwide for the rest of history.
C) Results of a lab test that, if you're there to do the extraction, will cure cancer, heart disease, and the common cold simultaneously.
D) Your Nobel Prize ceremony in the literature category.
E) Fishing.

Ten years ago Phil Mickelson's wife was giving birth to their third child when her uterus tore. She nearly bled out in the delivery room.

I'm sure he would have felt awesome about himself had he been making the turn at Sugarloaf when that was happening to her.

A lot of times things go wrong in the delivery room. Even if they don't, I can't imagine being the kind of person that would rather be working than attending to the birth of my child.

And a major isn't fair away either. As somebody mentioned, unless this money is a game-changer for your family(which includes the child), I think the decision is easy.

BTW, the eventual winner Brandt Snedeker acknowledged the babies help in him winning.

''Zoe will be getting a very nice baby gift from me,'' Snedeker said. ''I can't thank Kandi enough for going into labor early. I don't know if I'd be sitting here if she hadn't. But that is a way more important thing than a golf tournament. I missed a golf tournament when my first was born, and it was the best decision I ever made. I'm sure Hunter would say the same thing.''

I think the important thing to remember is there is no right way to do this and people need to decide what's best for them. I personally could be in the room but not past the blanket. My buddy har one the other day and watched the surgery. Can't do that myself. He watched them cut his wife open, pull out the ole uterus, and then the baby. He was cool with it. I would not be.

He was lucky that he was in a position to be able to make that choice to return for the birth. If you are living paycheck to paycheck to barely provide food and shelter for your family then the moral implications become pretty blurred. Good on him for being there but each situation is different for each different family.
