View Full Version : Football Sandbox Football Year 3 - Got room for some new owners.

Want a team? We had an exciting and thrilling Year 2, though marred by the fact that Sandbox Jovan Belcher did ... you know. Come and experience the excitement of Year 3 as new rookies enter the league and Sandbox stars such as Tom Brady, Adrian Peterson, and Aaron Hernandez show why they're destined for long and productive careers. (We're on a slight time lag in Sandbox.)

If you're interested in taking over a team, post your interest here. The calendar of events is roughly as follows:

1. We'll be doing the 2013 rookie draft over the next couple of weeks (August-early September).

2. You'll sign free agents, make trades, etc., from September through January.

3. You'll put your initial game plan together in January (or earlier - it doesn't matter).

4. Once the NFL season ends, we'll gear up and play the Sandbox season.

As you'll see, our schedule is designed to not interfere with your important but charmingly antiquated fantasy football season. Once you experience Sandbox football you'll never go back to fantasy football again, so enjoy that last season before we disrupt the entire fictional football universe.

Internet Testimonials for Sandbox Football include:

"It was great. I took over a turnaround team and really recreated its roster during the offseason. All teams are not created equal, so I made the playoffs!" - Thomas Jefferson

"I built my team around the running game. Big linemen, big running backs, and we just pounded the ball until the other team surrendered." - Ulysses S. Grant

"I like to play naked. It's so freeing. And I find myself so attracted to men who can run a good Sandbox game plan." - Megan Fox

Another reason to join is that the league's actual purpose is to troll me.

I'm 29-3 in two seasons, the best record in the league, and 0-2 in the playoffs.

There is much GoChiefs schadenfreude to be enjoyed in this league.

Cool. I've got two teams now that can use owners. The number at right is years remaining on their contract, though you have to subtract 1 from that. (Anyone with 1 year left is leaving in free agency, more or less, though you can retain up to 2 of them with long-term contracts.)

Provo went 7-9 last year and Seattle went 8-8.

It really is very addictive if you're into simulations. It reminds me a lot of Madden franchise mode, except without the graphical football part.

It's pretty cool altering your gameplan and seeing the effect in the sims. I lost a game last regular season because I had a stupid gameplan against a vastly inferior opponent.

Conversely, I lost my playoff game this year because an opponent I had dominated in regular season play twice, altered his gameplan.

mca and tattoo, claim a team if you want them. First post, first serve on choice.

We usually have a little turnover, so anyone who is interested can put their name on the list, and as we hear back about ownership we'll likely have more teams come available. We have two leagues of 24 teams each, so it's pretty active.

And as a testimonial, this thing is unreasonably fun and I anticipate CD and Rainman will only make it better going forward.

Anyone that participates in the Chiefsplanet Mock should be interested in doing this. Anybody that enjoyed the franchise settings in Madden would enjoy this.

And I move that we promote SNR to the big leagues immediately, and by that I mean League 1.

We have the following situations/histories

Columbia went 6-10 last year and is carrying over $453 for free agents.
Independence went 1-15 last year and is carrying over $459 for free agents.
Lexington went 1-15 last year and is carrying over $216 for free agents.
Oklahoma City went 8-8 last year and is carrying over $519 for free agents.
Pompano Beach went 11-5 last year and is carrying over $94 for free agents.

These teams are all likely better than their records since their owners didn't replace any injured players in the lineup over the course of the season. And most of them have significant money to spend in free agency since the other 19 teams average only $32 for free agents. This is a good chance to get in on a strong rebuild.

(The $ amounts might change. Right now, this is based on a 50% carryover tax from year to year.)

Several of the folks in League 1 also have League 2 teams, so you can rape gochiefs' face in that league if that is your desire.

I'm not sure yet if we'll have any turnover in League 1. cdcox needs to look at the stats, but everyone in that league was active going into the season.

Was it rough operating 2 teams?

I actually prefer to run two teams. It makes it less devastating if one of them loses, and I like the roster-building part more than the game-planning. Running two teams gives me more fun thinking about the draft and free agency and stuff.

A little bit. The user interface isn't really multiple team friendly yet, but I completely understand how low priority that is at this point.

Last year, my league 2 team (The Lights) made the playoffs as a wildcard and went to the conference championship. This year, wildcard and a loss in the divisional round.
The fewer active owners made for strong teams at the top, then well balanced teams that Rainman and CD babysat.

I "made the jump" to the big leagues this season. Took over a 7-9 (last season) team.

You should ask all those League 1 guys which of them won this year.

Oh, what? It was some League 2 guy with a 9-7 (this season) team?

You don't say...

It's going to be sometime in the next couple of weeks, but I can't say more specifically. Hopefully sooner rather than later. cdcox has some work stuff going on right now before he can set up the draft database.

The rosters are already stocked, so it'll just be a 7-round rookie draft. We'll then have a low-intensity free agency period for the rest of the NFL season, and the Sandbox season will start in February or thereabouts.

Cool. I'll put you on the waiting list for League 1.

We haven't had anyone run two teams in one League before (other than me as the Operations Manager), but I'd be open to it depending on how many new owners we have. You'd just need to have any trades between the two teams approved by the Operations Manager (which would be me).

You can spend as much or as little time on your team as you want.

Researching players for the draft and free agency can be time consuming.

But game to game, if you want, setting lineups planning your playcalling strategy can take only 15-20 minutes.

You could easily just spend 2 minute setting your lineup and not alter your gameplan all year if you wanted, too.

The draft coming up is like a fantasy draft. You can do however much prep you'd like. It's seven rounds.

Past that, I would say it's going to be a small amount of time in free agency. Maybe check the site a couple of times a week and enter bids if you want.

Then as we start the season it may take a couple of hours to set up your lineups and game plan. (early February or maybe late January)

During the season (February-March), maybe an hour a week to "watch" the games and tweak lineups/game plans.

We actually made all of our players make their wives become stay at home mothers or give their children up to a football development agency run by Dilfer. Upon reaching the age of 18, the child can then chose what college they'd like to start for (because nobody on this team is going to have backup offspring) and can contact their parents again.

There is of course, a daycare facility and school set up for the coaches families.

Hmm, rules.

Rules.

(Shuffling through papers.)

It's really more of a calendar than rules at this point.

When you get access, you'll see a bunch of pull-down menus, and they'll be obvious. You can see your roster and stuff. Most of it will be inactive right now since we're in the offseason, but the following will happen:

1. Once we open up the draft, you'll go to the rookie draft menu and it's a pretty obvious draft process. (We need to get the draft order posted, I guess.) After the draft, you'll assign them rookie contracts on the "manage roster" page. I'll dig up the contracting rules and post them.

2. Once we finish the rookie draft, the next phase will be free agency, which will last the whole NFL season. Once that starts, you'll go to the free agency menu and there's a bidding process for available free agents. The act of signing them automatically gives them contracts - bigger $$ equals more years.

3. Once we finish free agency and lock down the rosters, your next step will be setting your lineup and developing your game plan. You can't do any of this until that phase starts, so don't get frustrated if you can't insert Eric Fisher into that right tackle spot just yet. This will happen in late January, most likely, though cdcox is continually making improvements to the process.

4. Then ... the games begin.

You basically have to set what formations you want to use (3 WR, I-Form, 5 WR, etc), set a percentage for each, and designate how often you want to run vs pass from those formations.

You do that for several different game situations. 1st and 10, 2nd and 10, 2nd and 6-9, 2nd and less than 5, 3rd and 10+, and so on.

And you do it in three different columns: Normal offense, Hurry up and run out the clock.

I ran the score up on some sad teams this year by setting my run/pass to 50/50 during run out the clock mode. o:-)

Defensive stuff is a bit simpler. You set your blitz frequency, what players you want off the field in nickel and dime, how much rest your starters get on the DL.

Like I said, I'll donate Little Rock in League 2 if its to a good home.

They're not in brilliant shape, but they were a playoff team with a pretty nasty young defense. They won their wild card game and lost in the divisional round.

They have some nice trade chips at LB or at DE - lots of good LBs but a serious shortage on the DL convinced me to play them as a 3-4 last year with some 4-3 personnel; it actually worked out okay, but I'd recommend committing to a system and moving in/out the rest of the parts to make it work.

Really they're just dying at the skill position spots. Megatron is the #1 WR, so there's a start. But Santana Moss is the #2 and I couldn't even name the #3 right now. Green-Ellis is the starting RB and he's just trash. And like the RBs, I couldn't tell you who their TEs are. They're okay at the Ts but could use an upgrade on the interior line.

Get a RB, TE and WR2 in there and that teams an immediate contender. I was looking forward to getting my sleeves rolled up, but if someone else wants to play, it's all theirs.

Didn't mean anything personal by that. I understand that it's a great thing for some of these folks, but I am just not that into it. I do want to keep my L2 team, but honestly even that is just to see where it may progress from what it is now.
I hope ya'll make millions off of it.

No worries. Different people like different aspects. I love Sim Day despite the often bitter disappointments it causes in the results, and I love the drafts and free agency. I'm not really into the game planning part of it, but that's my price for getting to do the stuff I like more.

SPChief, you'll be the Overland Park Chiefs in League 1. Their record was only 2-14 last year, but there's some pretty good talent to work with. Follow the registration instructions from earlier in this thread, and then cdcox will get you set up.

Done and ready

I've updated the two League threads, but here's the update for those of you who are wandering around the Lounge.

Okay, everyone. We're looking at the following as a schedule. This is all tentative, and cdcox will update it as he gets all of the pieces in place.

Early next week you'll get an option to re-sign up to two departing free agents.

You'll also get your annual infusion of free agent dollars, which I think we've set at $450. This will be used to sign rookies in the next week, but also free agents over the next several months, so spend wisely. Any dollars you're holding from last year will carry forward, but with a 50% tax.

You'll have two days to sign free agents.

At the same time (give or take a day), we'll put the rookie draft up. The universe will consist of anyone who was drafted. Any undrafted rookies can be signed in the free agency period to follow. You can put your draft board together to prepare.

Draft day will start later in the week. Are there any strong preferences for the day of week? Candidates will likely be Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday (September 5th through 8th), with a likely preference for Friday here at Sandbox headquarters. Unless there's a huge outcry or quiet technical problem, we'll shoot for Friday the 6th.

When the draft starts, we will have one hour per pick. cdcox is trying to set up an e-mail notification, but we would advise you to have your draft board ready and monitor frequently. If you don't make your pick and don't have a draft board ready, you will draft the highest-drafted player still on the board, even if it's a Bronco or Raider.

I apologize for the bump to you non-Sandboxers, but just wanted to put out a reminder that the rookie draft begins this evening. Be sure that you're on hand and/or have your draft board prepared.

If I run out of people in my draft list.....does it just draft best available? Or does it skip my team?

The order is:

1. If your draft list is populated and locked on (checkbox at top), it will draft the top player on your list in one millisecond.

2. If your draft list is not locked on, you will have one hour to make your selection manually.

3. If your draft list has names but is not locked on and you do not make a selection in one hour, it will draft the top player on your draft list and other owners will frown at you for wasting an hour of their precious lives.

4. If your draft list has no names and you do not make a selection in one hour, the you will be given the highest pick in the NFL draft who remains undrafted in Sandbox.

The draft will stop at Midnight Eastern each night and resume the next morning (I think at 10 a.m. Eastern). Have your draft list ready and locked on if your pick is coming up.

I move that if the draft list is populated but not locked, it drafts the player drafted highest.

That encourages people to not fuck off and not lock their draft boards or check timely.

As it is, there is literally no deterrent to leaving your board unchecked.

Can we make trades for picks?

I'll talk with cdcox about it, but I'm not inclined to do that. I'm a non-absentee owner, and I like to have my draft board in place so I can see it and adjust if there's suddenly a run of autopicks barreling toward me.

Yep. Go to the trade menu and you'll see how it works.

On trade offers, you pick something involved in the trade (player or pick), and click "add to transaction". Then you pick something else involved in the trade and do it again. Once you have the proposed transaction put together, you click "approve trade" and submit it as a proposal.

Is there some kind of notification that I'm on the clock (e-mail)? Or do I just need to be there?
