Yes. If the person builds up a dependence on them. If it's being taken for a short period of time for temporary pain (post surgery for example), then addiction is unlikely, unless the person is predisposed to such things (already enjoys recreational drug use). If being taken for chronic pain, long term, then addiction is inevitable.

You are right. I always just called up my doctor and they would refill for me but I never took them as prescribed I took extra and frequent them so I assumed if I took them as prescribed it wouldn't be as bad.

Some people don't like the opiate buzz... but it's not just that you don't feel anything when you're on opiates. It's that it's completely euphoric at the same time. It erases your stress and cares. Comfortably numb is the best way to describe it... though I actually get a "rush" of energy as well from them, especially if I drink.

To me, it's similar to when ecstasy first starts coming on. Euphoria and energy.

That being said, people have different preferences. Lots of my friends love them some xanac, klonopin, and other benzos. I hate them.

And I should add: this is all based on my past.. not my current life. I'm pretty much alcohol only at this point.

There is a euphoria before you get to that point which people chase. The hardest part about coming off is trying to sleep. You wake up and your entire body feels like it has "restless leg". Nerve ending firing everywhere.

When I've taken oxycodone, I've never understood why people take it recreationally. I don't get any of what you describe. Other than a slight spaceiness, it mostly makes it so I can't sleep (or shit). I try to avoid it, though it is one of the few things that will help with the killer headaches I get sometimes.

Well over the majority of the population takes at least one rx drug, and I think I saw at least 40% of the US population is on 3 prescribed drugs. Big pharmaceutical is your suburban, middle class and up drug pusher. Not to discount their actual beneficial uses, it's just our society is lazy, overworked, or what not and taking a pill seems to be the preferred solution. Lack of access to therapy, and behavior modification due to insurance steep decline in coverage for mental health as well as state and federal funding for these programs has driven the use of prescription drugs way up since the 80's.

Plus, people like to use it recreationally.

In those cases, yes, hydrocodone is often prescribed over and over.

His solution was always to tell them to "come on out to the clinic right now, and I'll fix your tooth for you" (his clinic was right next to our house). That usually separated the people with real issues from the scrip hounds. Of course, he also ended up actually having to go next door and fix people's teeth on occasion at all hours of the night.

I had to have my appendix removed and when I went into the ER the night before....they gave me morphine. Didn't do anything for me. I went back the next day (after a fuck up by the hospital) and they gave me Dilaudid as soon as they admitted me. That shit hit me in like 5 seconds. I've been given morphine several times for post op from shoulder surgeries and once when I was in the hospital after the cottonmouth bite on my foot. Both times it put me to sleep and then when I'd wake up, I'd think it'd been several hours, because the pain was unbearable, and look at the clock and it'd be like 7 minutes later. Couldn't wait to push the button to kill the pain. Then they'd give me vicodin when I was discharged, but I just took ibuprofen and threw the vicodin away. I don't like feeling sleepy unless Its time to go to bed.
