This is why I don't like the unbalanced schedule. It doesn't matter for the division, but for Wild Cards, we'd argue that we had to face Detroit's lineup more often, and the Yankees and Orioles would argue that the AL East might be better top to bottom, but there'd be no question if we all played the same schedule. You can't do that in the NFL, but you could easily do it or come close in baseball.

Rany and Soren were talking about that this morning, and I agree. He has to adjust and learn how to use the new helmet. It's just not good for him to take those head shots time after time with the old masks on.

The difficulty of jumping over this many teams for the 2nd Wild Card from this far back this late in the year probably means that we need to at least split Detroit and go 5-1 or 6-0 on the Indians to remain in the picture.

ROYALS
Royals’ Perez switches catcher’s masks after foul tip to the chin
September 6
BY BLAIR KERKHOFF
The Kansas City Star

Salvy Perez sported a new look Friday

He wore a catcher’s mask that the Royals hope will give him better protection. The switch was inspired by Thursday’s incident, a foul tip that Perez took off the chin.

It happened in the fifth inning of the Royals’ 7-6, 13-inning triumph over the Mariners, and after Perez delivered an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning, he left the game because of dizziness.

Perez was cleared by concussion tests to play against the Tigers on Friday, and he switched to a mask that better absorbs impact, one he used briefly earlier in the season.

“He’s had three or four balls off the side of the mask, and that’s no problem,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “It’s when he gets hit in the jaw, that’s causing the problem. The (mask) it was using just wasn’t working.”

Also, the Royals will position Perez closer to the plate.

“We’re going to scoot him up under the hitters a little closer, see if maybe he can dodge some foul balls that way,” Yost said.

Perez spent a week on the seven-day concussion list in early August after taking a foul tip off the mask.

Cain available to hit

Outfielder Lorenzo Cain wasn’t in the lineup, but he was available to hit for the first time in a month. He took early batting practice and declared himself fit.

“It felt pretty good,” Cain said. “The next step is to get on the field. I’m ready to go.”

Until he entered Thursday’s game as a defensive replacement in right field, Cain had missed 25 games because of a strained oblique. He’s having a terrific year defensively and entered Friday’s game hitting .261 with four home runs and 43 RBIs.

Gordon approaching century mark

Alex Gordon’s 17th home run of the season on Thursday gives him 99 for his Royals career. With one more he becomes the 13th Royals player with at least 100 home runs.

Getz out

Yost ruled second baseman Chris Getz out for Friday’s game. Getz left Tuesday’s game with the Mariners because of dizziness and stomach problems.

This day in Royals history

As the Royals continue to pile up stolen bases — they lead the majors with 130 entering Friday’s game — we recall the greatest base pilfering day by an individual in team history. On Sept. 7, 1971, Amos Otis set a club record with five stolen bases against the Milwaukee Brewers at Municipal Stadium.

alnorth

A big reason why the Royals aren't completely dead yet (though they probably wont make the playoffs) is the bullpen. KC's bullpen is the best in the AL, by a longshot, and its not even close. They have a 2.50 ERA this season, and the second-best bullpen in the AL is Texas with 3.02 ERA.

Kinda weird, I remember many years when the Royals relief pitchers were almost all awful.

I have noticed this too. I'm usually not superstitious, but it does get discouraging, outside of mojo, to always seem to start threads and update it a bunch of times for a loss.

On the flipside, for games that I have actually attended, I think the Royals have been like 5-1 this year. Every time I go to the K, they seem to win. Unfortunately, I live in DSM, so its hard for me to go to more than a few games a year.

First pitcher since 1916 to give up 14 hits and not make it out of the 4th. That's a shitload of statistical correction in one game.

The latest stat fix was 10-1 was fixed to 13-1...

Being in the top 4 for innings pitched the last 3 years PLUS this year isn't a promising record either

It's only one game. Last game the Tigers played Boston rocked 'em for 20 runs. I sure hope KC doesn't give up more than 20 to the Jagoffs.

And Baltimore and Cleveland move up. It seems like 4.5 is close but as long as a few teams ahead of KC keep winning they still lose ground.

Yes sir it will. Which means another season to watch Yost mismanage the bull pen and an almost guarantee that we trot out the same non-clutch lineup, hanging our hats on the hope that Moose, Gordon, and Hosmer can put together a whole season where they play at the level they are expected to. And to watch our overpaid, overweight DH hit 15 HR's when the bases are empty. Oh yeah, and another year of Wade Davis and Luis Mendoza in our starting rotation after we lose Santana.

I think it was the 2nd inning when on the telecast Ryan made a comment about after the 4th inning James would be at 200 innings.I swear when he said that my first thought was oh shit he's not going to last that long now.

I'm sure they'll add more shiny objects to the outfield pavilion. Maybe a tilt a whirl with lots of chrome and glitter and flashing lights. Oh, and don't forget to buy your tickets for "A's Appreciation Weekend." We do so wish we could be the Oakland A's. We just need to show our love and respect for them when they come in and sweep us.....

Mr. Wal-Mart prolly "Liked" this post... First, all those things are cheaper than any player since he'll have some back-country ex-employee build it and spray-paint it "chrome". And, since he'll build it, they'll come...
