View Full Version : Chiefs Justin Houston wins AFC Defensive player of the week

Week One was a good one for Missouri’s football teams. The Chiefs pasted the Jaguars 28-2, the Rams came back to beat the Cardinals 27-24 and a defensive player from each team wound up recording three sacks on the way to victory. The NFL announced Wednesday that those players have each been named the defensive player of the week for their respective conferences.Chiefs linebacker*Justin Houston*spearheaded a shutout effort by the Chiefs defense with three sacks against the hapless Jacksonville offense. The 2012 Pro Bowler finished last season with 10 sacks, a number that may not wind up standing as his career high for very long should he continue to pressure offenses even half as well as he did in the season opener.

There was no AFC Offensive player of the week. No one was worthy :)

Write the Right Word: Dominant vs. Dominate

“Dominant” and “dominate” sound somewhat alike, but they can’t be used interchangeably.

“Dominant” is an adjective, meaning it is used to describe a subject. It is defined as having or exerting authority or influence, or occupying or being in a commanding or elevated position. For example, “Wheat is the dominant crop in many parts of North Dakota.” “Which is the dominant gene?”

“Dominate” is a verb. It means to rule over, have control of, tower over or overshadow. For example: “The instructor dominates the class.” “Successful leaders dominate events rather than react to them.”

No wonder you're having difficulty with the English language. If you are able to button up your shirt correctly and put your shoes on the correct feet, I'd be pretty impressed.

Don't let that English language shit worry you.

I think you would have an argument at the moment as to find someone who is actually better.

Try it.......

You can make an argument against Charles, Poe, and Flowers. Those are the 4 best players on the Chiefs in MY OPINION.

Good thing we have him under contract through 2014. After that, we can tender or franchise him if we can't get him signed long term.

By 2015, Hali and DJ will both be on their last legs and their salaries fall off the books.

The only concern I have about our week one pass rushing performance I have (not even a concern...more of an asterisk) is that I thought Gabbert should have been able to side-step Jackson's sack and one of Houston's. A QB with legit awareness and pocket presence escapes at least one of those.

Good point.

Romo is pretty mobile and has a very very quick release, we will be able to judge our pass rush a bit better vs. the Cowgirls.

Although their offensive line is not even SEC quality...

that OL isn't bad and they got manhandled at the LOS by our DL. Sacks are glamourous and all, but this DL was in the Jags backfield pretty much all afternoon.

Romo's a different cat for sure, but Poe is going to have him a day this week and just like last week, the QB will be forced to run out the pocket. Romo's pretty good on the run too, but Houston & Hali are pretty good at contain pass rush.

Pressure from the DL. They'll bring it. Dallas OL is about to get buttraped hardcore.

That's true.

But then again, I read we only blitzed like 15% of the time, so we'll probably be more aggressive against good QBs and they won't be able to side-step/step up.

that was the 2nd sack they gave Houston full credit for....but to be honest Catapano couldve gotten credit for half as well. Houston got there a split second earlier down low but Catapano beat Joeckel badly on the edge and cleaned it up high. Excited to see what this D does this year! Got some good pieces to do something special.

How many 33 year old pass rushers are out there? Not too many.

I know James Harrison, and Freeney are, but usually they don't last much past about 31, 32.

Nothing against Wake, but Houston had a better week.

Outside of Cameron Wake, Robert Quinn was the league's most dominant pass-rushing force in Week 1.
