Chiefs’ McGrath makes most of opportunity
September 29
BY TEREZ A. PAYLOR

Nothing comes easy for aspiring young tight ends in the NFL, least of all playing time and targets.

So when Sean McGrath found himself getting plenty of both for the Chiefs on Sunday, well, there was no use trying to hide his enthusiasm.

“I was getting juiced, man,” said McGrath, who had a career-high five catches on five targets for 64 yards.

McGrath actually punctuated one catch, a 23-yarder in the second half, with an emphatic first-down gesture. And don't even get the former Henderson State player started on his first career NFL score, a 5-yard touchdown over the middle that gave the Chiefs a 7-0 first-quarter lead.

“I found myself sitting open right in the back of the end zone there and as Coach (Andy) Reid would say, (Alex) dotted me with the ball,” McGrath said. “I saw it come in and all I was thinking was just catch it, catch it, catch it.

“(I've come) a long way; it's been a long time (coming), boy, a long time.”

McGrath, a 6-foot-5, 247-pounder who spent most of last season on Seattle's practice squad, was picked up by the Chiefs right before the season. He made his second career start on Sunday and has caught 11 of the 13 passes thrown his way in an effort to establish himself as a reliable target while starter Anthony Fasano and third-round rookie Travis Kelce sit due to injuries.

“I think he's done an excellent job of really just going out and playing,” said quarterback Alex Smith, who essentially said that's not necessarily a given with young guys. “He didn't blink, he just stepped in and went and we didn't even notice, didn't skip a beat. So I've been really impressed with him.”

Smith was also complimentary of tight end Kevin Brock, 27, who was cut by the Chiefs right before the start of the season, only to be re-signed before the Philadelphia game when the Chiefs were thin due to injuries to Fasano and Kelce.

Brock caught two passes for 27 yards on Sunday, equaling his career totals in both categories entering the game. Brock caught two passes for 27 yards as a member of the Buffalo Bills in 2011, which also happened to be the last time he caught a pass before Sunday.

“To have him coming in, playing a lot of football, he's done a great job,” Smith said.

But the star of the game at the position was clearly McGrath, whom Reid praised afterward.

“Listen, McGrath made a game-winner last week and he came up big this week,” Reid said. “He got hit in the ankle, he got hit in the knee, but he kept battling through it.”

McGrath left the game briefly after injuring his left leg in the first half, but later re-entered the game and later downplayed the injury.

“I just got twisted up, trying to get that first down,” said McGrath, who was wearing a sleeve on his left leg after the game. “I just twisted it ... I probably overreacted a little bit.”

Now, McGrath just hopes he can continue to stay healthy and contribute so his comfort level with Smith continues to grow.

“We've been playing together four weeks ― it's not that much time to get acquainted with each other,” McGrath said. “But like I said before, Alex throws to the open guy. I try to get open as much as I can. That's just playing football.”

Thought this was a cool article about a guy who came out of nowhere to be a really solid weapon for Alex. What a steal he's been so far. Hope he can keep it up.

He gets open, catches balls and gets headed in the right direction almost immediately once he has the ball.

I loved that he went right back to the cut block after the first one to JPP left him rolling on the field. The Beard is willing to do some nasty for the team.

He's a real talent.

The Chiefs are truly fortunate that the Seattle Seahawks are so freaking talented that they could afford to cut him.

they tried to pass him onto the PS for a 2nd year in a row and they should have assumed there was zero chance of that. I guess they thought he was a nobody from such a small school that nobody was paying attention.

they basically groomed him all of 2012 on their team

I am really hoping that when the other tight ends get healthy, that he still continues to get playing time. He is earning it, and I think the other players and the fans really appreciate his efforts. He runs nice routes, blocks hard, and just flat out catches the football. How do you sit this guy? I don't know, and I hope Reid doesn't either.

What is it? Henderson State or some shit?

yea I dont even know where Henderson State is on the map or college ranks,

he apparently has an interesting story, he originally went to Eastern Illinois and was kicked off the team (school?) for partying too hard and found his way at a DII dry school and led them to the championship.

Entered the draft (went undrafted) trying to be a longsnapper because he was a really good in-line blocking TE in high school and college, most of his reps were blocking because he is well, really slow. So his soft hands might very well be a natural gift.

He seems to have battled adversity to get where is today and it is very cool to see him accomplishing his dream and getting acknowledged for it by how hard he now pushes himself

I think we under-estimate mcgrath's athletic ability.

Although his 40 time is nothing great (4.78), He had a nice 10-yard split at 1.64, a very impressive 6.99 3-cone (would have been 4th at Combine) and 4.14 short shuttle (3rd) - a 35.5" vertical (T-5th) and a 10'3" broad jump (3rd). So, right off the bat, his above average athleticism jumps out at you. big 10 3/4" mitts, 33 3/4" arms and an 80 3/4" wingspan, important attributes for catching the football, but for a tight end, very important in blocking as well.

His athletic ability is comparable to Kelce's.

To be fair, his run blocking still isn't very good. Particularly compared to Fasano.

But yeah, I'm rooting for the kid. He's come out of nowhere to bail our asses out.

How long is Fasano out BTW?

I think we have underestimated Alex Smith's ability to pass to TEs. ;)

**** those two hot tub queens.

McGrath gets his ankle and knee ****ed up, he goes to the sidelines for a minute, rubs some beard hair on it, and runs back onto the field.

Those other two cocksuckers are ordering another round of drinks while McGrath is catching a TD pass and laying JPP out to dry...

It is so hard for these undrafted kids to get playing time its awesome to see one take full advantage of it when it does happen. And I think he knows that....why do you think he keeps going back out on the field even when banged up? I bet even if he broke his arm and had a bone sticking out through his uniform he would wrap it with duck tape and go back out there. I think he sees this as his one shot and he's not gonna give it up lightly. I'm pulling for the guy.
