View Full Version : Football You should be worried about Rivers

Dude is straight up beasting this year.

He just set the all time record for accuracy in a 400 yard game, and there is only one other QB even close to as good as him statistically this season (Manning, duh). Manning is statistically better in every category, actually he leads the NFL in every important category, but Rivers is right behind him.

I think a lot of you were assuming 2 wins against us this year, but what I've seen from Rivers the last 4 games has me more excited than ever. He's never played this good, and he used to be considered "Elite."

I'll compare Rivers, Manning, and Brees because they seem like the 3 best QBs to compare as of now. Brady is suffering with his shitty receiving corps, or else I'd throw him in here too.

Yards
Manning - 1470 (1st)
Brees - 1434 (2nd)
Rivers - 1199 (7th)

Comp %
Manning - 75.0% (1st)
Rivers - 73.9% (2nd)
Brees - 66.9% (4th)

Touchdowns
Manning - 16 (1st)
Rivers - 11 (2nd)
Brees - 10 (3rd)

Passer Rating
Manning - 138.0 (1st)
Rivers - 118.8 (2nd)
Brees - 103.8 (5th)

Total QBR
Manning - 91.4 (1st)
Rivers - 81.4 (2nd)
Brees - 74.9 (4th)

Interceptions (Starters Only)
Manning - 0 (1st)
Rivers - 2 (T-4th)
Brees - 4 (~T-18th)

Apologies to Aaron Rodgers for not having played 4 games or else I'd use him in comparison too.

I'm not sure anyone was assuming 2 wins against you this year.

I am assuming they'll find a way to flame out brilliantly for the season as a whole in true Chargers fashion.

It'll definitely be a tougher game than I would have guessed. I could see a split series, though I think our defense will be tough for Rivers to see anywhere near that level of production.

While the NFC East is currently one of the worst.

If you havent had a chance to watch any of our games this year, check out our next game against Oakland (will be on late at night on Sunday on NFL Network after the SNF game).

Our new offense is the No Huddle / No Hurry offense. Pretty much we never huddle, don't allow you to sub on defense, and then Rivers waits and reads the defense and calls the play with about 10 seconds on the play clock. Has worked like a charm so far.

The only good defense you've faced is Tennessee, and they held you to 17 points. Houstons defense has given up more points than your defense. I like that the AFC West is a legit division again instead of the joke it has been. I think it'll be a split.

Tennessee handled him pretty well.

Expect roughly the same results when he faces KC. Offensive coordinators thus far don't have a fucking clue how to control Sutton's pre-snap looks. Usually it's the other way around, where defensive coordinators have to crack the code to these offenses.

Look hes playing good(again) but really when the FugK has that ever mattered for the Chargers.
The Bolts were picked how many yrs in a row to win the west and how many yrs in a row did they find a way to screw it up?
Over and over and over the reason you ask?..here is a hint(The pictures on this post)
Whether it starts to happen by week 8 or week 14 the above picture of the angry chipmunk will make its rounds on the gazillion sports shows.
Its a given. Fumbles INTs ..its coming.
But this yr its also that the Chargers defense Blows a$$.
So eventually Phillis will be Phillis and coupled with the Defense it'll implode eventually.
The Chiefs just need to take care of themselves and teams like the Bolts will take care of themselves they always do..yr after yr.

 This whole perception started with the Cutler incident and that's BS. Cutler was talkin' smack while getting smacked around, Rivers merely nicely asked him to pipe down. All of a sudden he's being called whiny.

Sure he kicks the ball and gets flustered occasionally, but who doesn't. Favre was twice as bad and nobody dared to call him a pussy.

I guess you guys just see what you want to see. If I were a Chief fan I would probably hate Rivers because he's a fiery competitor who threatens my teams ability to make the playoffs, and I would drive an Iroc and do meth.

ROFL

Sure he kicks the ball and physically expresses his frustrations ALL THE GODDAMNED TIME! But that's what all QBs do, right? Riiiight?

Newsflash, bro: Nearly all QBs are just as fierce competitors as Rivers is. This goes back to Tebow, where people who claimed years ago that Tebow was the next thing in the NFL because nobody wanted to win more than he did. That was absolute garbage. Tebow did dumb shit like kneeling and jumping up and down like a psychotic methhead and hitting himself in the face with hammers because he was just so darn competitive! People pointed to that and said, "We don't see very many other QBs doing those kinds of things. That must be the key to his success, and why he won all those games with the Broncos! He just wants it so much more than everybody else!"

And the same shit applies to Rivers. Other QBs I can guarangoddamntee you are just as fierce and want to win just as much as Rivers does. It only looks like Rivers wants it more because he noticeably does stupid shit. Whereas NORMAL QBs who have those kinds of emotions in check don't need to kick the football and yell and scream and pout to the officials constantly.

I cited the example of Favre who did stupid shit all the time and nobody called him a pussy. How about everybody's favorite Peyton who's starting fights with his O-Linemen on the sideline? Is he a whiny bitch too?
BTW - kicking the football, yelling and screaming I can agree with, but, I've never seen him pout and I don't get where the perception of him being whiny or a pussy comes from. It's all baseless.

I have a real dislike for Rivers. The guy's a douche on the field. Hell already this season he freaked the hell out on a call that went against him and drew an "unsportsmanlike conduct" penalty for being all up in the ref's face. Can't remember who they were playing, I was watching Red Zone at the time.

That said, can't argue with the numbers he's putting up. I thought we were done with this asshole, but I guess it'll be up to this Chiefs D to take him down a couple notches. Again.

B_Ambuehl
10-01-2013, 10:21 PM
The Chargers O is playing wayyy over their heads. They have practice squad fodder at 4 out of 5 oline positions and slapdicks at receiver. They'll likely end up regressing substantially, but this does answer the question of whether other QBs could put up Peyton Manning numbers running Peyton Mannings offense.

It also remains to be seen whether Alex Suck can keep up offensively with either Denver or S.D. At a likely 5-0 after this weekend there is a significant cushion when it comes to making the playoffs, but most folks around here know how these things end, especially with an Alex Suck at the QB position.

He's ranked #2 in my fantasy league.

The CHIEFS would be considered ELITE with Rivers as their QB. All you Chiefs fans would be singing a dif tune about his attitude if he played in KC. I've seen him play 7-8 times and he's very competitive while also being very durable

You have a QB who is playing lights out. He has been and is very very good. You also have an average WR core an ageing TE who could be hurt at any second. No RB that scares any body and a defense giving up what? 25 or so a game?
We have an absolute dominating defense, two LB's beasting! A nose tackle that DEMANDS a double team every play. a solid line backing core and a defensive back field that quietly gets better every game... on offense we have a game changing Rb a wide reciever in Bowe who has not yet done what he is capable of and a QB not making mistakes. That QB is also willing to give himself up for a yard at any time(a QB who i dont really like but is proving to sacrifice his well being none the less on every down).
so sorry that im not shaking in my boots because your QB is playing up to the potential that every one has expected him to play for years.

To play devil's advocate, I don't think their WR group is aging, Gates has looked fantastic and is lighter (IIRC) and Woodhead is no fun at all with various alignments/personnel groupings.

Additionally, I'd argue that we have 3 LBs "beasting".

I've been pessimistic about Rivers the past couple years for good reason, but the way he played against Dallas was impressive. He looked like the Rivers of old - a legitimate elite quarterback. Please don't compare Rivers to Tebow.

Does it cost his team yards when he yells at his o-linemen? No. That is called keeping emotions in check.

Rivers has been much better than I expected, after seeing the turnover machine he's been over the last 2 seasons. SD is someone to watch, BUT they are not a team I expect to get close enough to Denver and KC for a playoff seed. They just lost Floyd and a big pass rush threat in Freeney too. I don't think they stay as competitive as they have been. 7 or 8 win season.

Did the same thing. Had to start him last week and he kicked butt. If I had just about anyone else other than Aron Rodgers as my starter he would keep the job. I'm still iffy on if Rodgers can score mone on Detroit this week than Rivers can on the Raiders.

Our defense is as garbage as garbage gets, but our offense can consistently put up 30. That will beat plenty of teams.

Points per game season average below, minus the game vs. the Chiefs so as not to skew things. Scores against KC in parentheses.

Jacksonville - 9.6 (0)
Dallas - 27.6 (16)
Philadelphia - 27.6 (16)
New York - 18 (7)

so basically the Chiefs are holding their opponents two scores below their usual offensive output. I don't doubt that the Chargers can put up points against KC (especially with Rivers' long ball accuracy), but I fully expect them to cap out around 20-25. Chiefs are averaging 25.5, but as we know a good chunk of that has come from defense and special teams scores. Overall that seems to net out in favor of the Chiefs, especially if they can rattle Rivers early and watch him implode.

Point is, Chiefs have made a habit of cutting most offenses off well below their scoring average.

Rivers is good, he has a lot of talent, but he's not a leader...

Rivers is still living the shadow of "what could have been" had they kept Drew Brees or actually had kept Eli Manning and not traded him away for Rivers. Eli and Big Ben were both from that draft and they have 4 SB rings on 5 trips. Drew Brees has a ring...

Rivers is really battling to prove he's not in the Matt Schaub group from that draft class... Matt can be just as flashy with the stats, but he's not really a leader either.

So, worried about Rivers? Sure, there's talent there and they can score, but he can get rattled and frustrated quite easily. It's good that 2-2 has you full of piss and vinegar again though.

To be honest, though, before the past few years, Kaeding, Marty, and Norv were the ones who really melted down in the playoffs, while LT pouted on the sidelines with his usual "toe injury."

And that reminds me of another point: yes, Rivers is a douchebag, yes, he's thrown embarrassing tantrums on the field sometimes, but he also is a pretty tough quarterback. He doesn't get enough credit for things like playing with a torn ACL in the AFC title game against the then-undefeated Patsies. He threw 37 passes that game and only lost by 9 points! (To this day, I believe we could have won that game with a healthy Rivers and Gates, but I digress.) Meanwhile, pussies like Peyton can't even handle cold weather in the playoffs.

lol, That's the only way I would be worried about Phillip Rivers. The Raiders defense completely battered him last night.

Im still not sure why that was a personal foul on Fluker though. The defender left his feet. Its not the offensive players job to make sure he lands on a cloud. If you leave your feet like that, you are asking to get destroyed.

And as for Rivers, and his skill players. I think they would be fine if they had Malcolm Floyd. Finally saw Keenan Allen last night. I really liked him in the draft. Mike McCoy knows offense. Hell he made the change mid season from Orton, to Tebow, and got the Broncos into the playoffs with him.

So, we all knew he could coach.

The defense is still crappy. They made Pryor look like Aaron Rodgers last night.

Interestingly enough, the lone team to stop him - the Titans when they were in TN. That doesn't really bode well for KC. SD offense > KC offense

Rivers lit up PHI (which Manning did as well) and Rivers lit up Dallas (which Manning will do as well). Enjoy.

Ah, so you're Knomo's Dad...

I'm glad Philip Rivers got a 400 yard game, that means he'll stay around longer because they think he's "Not the problem".

And another typical chokejob to go with it. I was on the fence, but now I seriously think it's time to trade Rivers to a QB-needy team (like the Texans, for example) and bottom out. I appreciate what he did for the franchise, but last night pretty much cemented that it's not working out anymore.

Sadly, I agree. I started Rivers in fantasy last night. I had no choice really. matt ryan was playing at NYJ.

I stayed up and watched the whole thing. He didn't handle pressure well last night. But, that throw to Keenan Allen, where Allen couldn't get that left foot down, was a GREAT throw, as was that one down the left side to Green. Great throws.

Rivers will always be just good enough to miss the playoffs.

Chiefs should be worried about every team they play. They aren't good enough to phone it in and win against anyone. And I think that all of the AFC West games this year are going to be some of our toughest games.

Rivers threw his 56th career INT to lose the game. Yeah we need to be worried about him.

I don't think Reid & co are going to let that happen. Trust the Walrus!

Good disciplined teams, rarely come out flat.

Effort will never be the issue with this team. too much heart, the coaching staff from top to bottom is demanding the best effort on every play. That's how you explain someone like Marcus Cooper, being the 3rd db, 4 weeks after being claimed on waivers.....

Competition within the roster, makes everyone else accountable.

Still, not sure who Chad Hall blew to have 64 straight pass attempts directed at him, unless they envision him in the role they originally had thought McCluster could run.

Manning - 5-0
Brees - 5-0
Rivers 2-3

No reason to be afraid of him if the rest of the team is coming along, I suppose.

Rivers is a good Qb but the Chiefs have all the tools to stop him, so im not worried about him. Im much more worried about Pryor. Running QB's have gashed us this season.
