AIKMAN RATINGS
Thru Week 4

The dominance of the Broncos offense is obvious no matter how you measure it – through the Aikman Offense Ratings, through the NFL’s yards-only method, through the eyeball test.

For example, in the Aikmans the Broncos are at 106.7, a figure that puts them on a record pace with a stunning margin of 12.4 over any other team.

But nearly as impressive has been the play of the Chiefs defense – at least as measured by the Aikman Defense Ratings, where Kansas City stands first at 93.5. It’s a closer edge over the Seahawks (91.4) – and not confirmed by the NFL’s yards only method which has Kansas City ranked 7th.

But it sets up the two undefeated AFC West teams as ranking 1-2 in the latest edition of the Aikman Combined.

If you measure teams strictly by their proficiency in yards gained on offense and allowed on defense, the best team by the NFL method is the 2-2 Texans who are 5th in the NFL on offense and 1st in defense for a combined rank of 6. The Aikman Ratings have them at 15th.

Last week, they went up from 7th on offense and 2nd on defense in the NFL rankings – while losing to Seattle despite outgaining the Seahawks, 476 yards to 270. In the Aikman Combined Ratings, they remained at 15th with their overtime loss while having a slightly lower Aikman Game score of 72.1 to Seattle’s 80.0.
