JFC. Tony or not, we need to get someone in here. McGrath has been a decent surprise, yes. But as much as this offense relies on the tight end, we need a playmaker at that position. Hell, look through Reids tenure as a head coach. He made it routine to turn guys that no one had ever heard of into tight ends with good numbers. I think McGrath is talented, but a lot of the success is tied to Andy's scheme as well.

Having a playmaker at that spot would make a world of difference with this offense.

Things change fast in the league. The idea of leaving ATL to go to KC to contend for a Super Bowl had never even been in the realm of possibility. ATL's on a bye week now. Julio's done. Roddy's down. It will soak in as he watches us curb stomp the Raiders on Sunday.

The media's done it's job for now. It planted the seed in the collective minds of the powers that be. Now we just need to let circumstances water the seed until Dorsey can pluck the ripened fruit off the tree.

yep

Gonzo would never admit that he wants to leave Atlanta anyway. That would look too much like quitting. If it happens, he will want it to look like the team trading him and he just went along with because it is what THEY wanted.

It absolutely is a long shot. But wow, have the stars aligned to make the impossible a somewhat viable solution:

1. After going 2-14, the Chiefs are off to a 5-0 start.
2. After appearing in the NFC Championship game, the Falcons are 1-4 and 5 games back.
3. The Falcons have lost their #1 weapon to a season-ending injury, and their #2 receiver is possibly out for multiple weeks.
4. Travis Kelce is now probably headed to IR, and Fasano is hobbled.
5. We brought in a Head Coach/QB/System that specializes in ball control/TE play.
6. Tony Gonzalez is retiring after this year, driving down the compensation.
7. His pro-rated salary fits under the cap perfectly.

who is a dying team? Probably could get Mercedes Lewis cheap, but hes hurt too so forget that.

I think Andy needs to call up Philly and ask about Celek. They have Zach Ertz who is clearly going to take over. Unless they are stingy bastards that roll with two good TEs like the Bengals. They also have James Casey who can play TE too who I think they even overpaid for in the offseason to basically not fucking play.

Again, it all depends on what happens over the next 3 weeks. ATL has a bye, then TB, then at Arizona. If they beat both teams, which is entirely possible, they're 3-4 with winnable games on the schedule. But if disaster strikes, or even if they just win one of those games, they'd have to take a good hard look at the big picture.

Assuming San Francisco/Seattle claims one wild card spot, that leaves one more for Atlanta, Detroit, Chicago (assuming GB wins North), Arizona, even Dallas/Philadelphia to fight for. ATL's still all-in, so it's business as usual for them. But they just lost their #1 playmaker. Their #2 playmaker is injured, and then there's Tony with NO running game. None. Good luck with that.

How about - and this is just a thought - we actually don't wait until the third round to draft a tight end? What if we actually drafted someone in the first two rounds?

The myth of the late round tight end is about as persistent as the journeyman QB. Sure, it happens, but like everything - the best bet is on drafting one in the first round.

Well, since we wont have a 2nd round pick next year I think we'll have to wait til at least the 3rd round again, if we plan on drafting one next year.

Obviously with our #1 pick we are gonna have to look at an OL, they are too safe to pass up.

Cooper, McGrath, and Ron Parker (to a lesser degree) have deflected draft criticism, even though they aren't draft picks.

Fisher will improve dramatically. Alex Smith came for the 2nd rounder (and next year's).

Injuries have stopped Kelce (season), Commings, and Nico Johnson (?).

Catapano's showed some upside, especially for a 7th rounder, and Eric Kush is a developmental guy.

The only bust that you can definitively label is Braden Wilson. Knile Davis is raw. I really hope Commings can come in and supplant Kendrick Lewis.

You can add Bray to the list of those deflecting criticism, I think. I'm not calling any of them a bust. Not a single one. Not Kelce, not fisher, not Comings.

But you absolutely have to take note when not one single draft pick out of this class has really contributed. Fisher has come the closest, but he's had the greatest negative impact as well.

You could say that the 2nd rounder used on Alex Smith has been the biggest impact, but I'm sorry... I don't count trades toward your draft grade. Why not? Why not factor in ALL uses of your draft picks?

Because the value in the draft is in identifying talent and moving on it. Granted, Alex Smith is probably better than any player we would have taken in the second round, but it still doesn't say anything about this team's ability to locate and draft talent coming out of college.

It's really not a great start. But then again, Nico, Kelce, Fisher, and Comings could all come back from injury and excel.

We could have a phenomenal draft next year where every guy is an upgrade over a starter. But in order to properly evaluate that, we have to acknowledge the shortcomings of this year.

Kelce may be the next Brokie Croyle or Tony Brokeaki

Every year is a new crop of draft talent and free agents to fill in the gaps. If you are stable at QB, HC and the lines.....you are set for several years.

If you go to the Chiefs website, Rick Burkholder gave a really good explanation of what's going on with Kelce. It's a part of Andy Reid's presser, if you want to watch it:

A little bit sure....but its not the end all some around here make it out to be. if a team gets 3 productive guys out of each draft, that's doing pretty damn good. at least half of a teams picks don't ever amount to much.

A lot of broken dicks there...

Martin Rucker, though... he was having a nice camp with us last year before he tore his ACL. He's a talented pass catcher. Don't remember him having durability issues at Missouri, either. Could be a nice fit if he is fully rehabbed.

Absolutely. Boss would be a very nice addition.

Boss wasn't on the list of free agents that was linked earlier. I actually thought that Boss might have decided to skip out on the CTE and leave the game entirely.

I think it's pretty clear that our needs in next years draft are TE and WR. Too bad we traded Baldwin (sarcasm). I recognize that I don't have 20 years coaching and analyzing talent but can I suggest that we look at people who don't have significant injuries while in college (Moeaki, Kielce and Davis come to mind).
