The Texans have named Case Keenum their Week 7 starting quarterback.

Matt Schaub (ankle/foot) has been ruled out, and the Texans are looking for a "spark" after T.Y. Yates showed little in relief against the Rams last Sunday. Keenum — who has never attempted a regular-season pass — is essentially being thrown to the wolves against the Chiefs, who have a league-leading 30 sacks, an unbelievable 10 of which came at home against the Raiders in Week 6. Keenum was a machine in college, but lacks NFL arm strength. It's a downgrade for the Texans' entire offense, while Keenum is a bottom-two play for Week 7.

"Casey Austin "Case" Keenum (born February 17, 1988) is an American football quarterback for the Houston Texans of the National Football League (NFL). Keenum is the NCAA's all-time leader in total passing yards, touchdowns, and completions. On October 22, 2011, Keenum became the Football Bowl Subdivision's all-time leader in total offense. On October 27, 2011, Keenum became the all-time leader in total touchdown passes by an FBS quarterback. During that game he threw for nine touchdowns and 534 yards.

In the 2008 college football season, Keenum ranked first nationally in total offense and second in total passing yards.[1][2] As a result of his on-field contributions to Houston's success, Keenum was named to several All-American lists. He is the only quarterback in Division I FBS football history to have passed for more than 5,000 yards in each of three seasons."

Dude is no slouch.

He just lacks the practice and reps because Kubiak doesn't have the guts to pull a Harbaugh and put him in.

Is the all time NCAA passing leader and he's got something to prove.

Matt Schaub = Statue
TJ Yates = Schaub 2.0

Case Keenum - Drew Brees wannabe

He may get crushed this game but he will end up being the Texans starter when it's all over.

P.S. Wasn't Cassel # 7?

Id want Case too if I were a Texans fans. Yates has a very high sack% (though a small sample size) and that O-line is straight up stanky

FWIW, here's Keenum's preseason numbers

43/63- 482 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs, 0 Sacks

He's a guy who has a quick trigger from his "Air Raid" days at UH, but with his arm strength and limited pro experience, it's likely we're looking at a YPA/YPC abortion. Though, with our playmakers, it's going to be tough for the Texans to sustain drives and score with small chunks of yards. I think it will reduce AJ's role a little bit--which would be great.

Prediction:

18/29- 159 Yards. 0 TDs, 1 INT
4 Sacks

You can try to extend plays against this defense, but you will pay for it. If you try to make things happen against this defense, they will force a turnover. I fully expect their plan to be "Here you go Arian Foster."

Not so much that. He just plays very smart and doesn't force things. He's more than a game manager because he can create and extend plays. He can improvise. For instance, he can take off running - draw the defense to him, then throw it to a WR before the crosses the LOS. Very good at extending plays.

At face value, there ought to be carnage on Sunday. If the Chiefs can slow down Arian Foster, they should win this game easily.

But we all know that the NFL can be unpredictable, and I suppose anything can happen. The Texans could rally behind him like the Browns did behind Hoyer.

Hopefully the talent on defense is enough to get it done.

I didn't see them play the Rams, but seems pretty odd to pull the hook on Yates without even giving him a full week to prepare a game plan?

Unless Kubiak simply thinks Yates will get shattered as a potential qb being groomed, but that seems silly.
Not a move I would have expected especially when he's likely fighting to keep his job for next year?

That seems unwise. I can't think of a worse baptism by fire than Arrowhead with the Chiefs defense on the other side of the ball.

I think the idea here is that Keenum is more mobile as a QB. But, so was Vick, and so was Pryor...The Chiefs know how to handle mobile QB's. Against Vick they seemed to struggle before locking him down.

I think that game taught them a lot because they did a great job on Pryor by having Houston spy on him the entire game.

But yes, having a QB make his first ever NFL start at Arrowhead is a lot to ask for...much more so considering how well this defense is playing.

Case Keenum
Weight: 208
40 Yrd Dash: 4.72
20 Yrd Dash: 2.72
10 Yrd Dash: 1.63

Justin Houston
Weight: 270
40 Yrd Dash: 4.62
20 Yrd Dash: 2.61
10 Yrd Dash: 1.62

This 'mobility' thing isn't going to end well. Keenum's times are only slightly better than Poe's.

I expect plenty of offensive penalties against the Texans this Sunday. Multiple false starts, and delay of game penalties.

This Kansas City Defense is damn near mirroring the 2000 Ravens defense that was absolutely legendary. Both. He is VERY dangerous. He can throw on the run as well. He won't make huge mistakes. I watched all of his college home games. The kid is a winner and has improved drastically since the Texans picked him up (the same way KC picked up Bray) two seasons ago. Kubes has really worked with this kid and he would have competed for the starting job next season.

I get the whole "making his first start at ARROWHEAD" thing, but the Chiefs would have had a MUCH easier time with Schaub and Yates. They would be wise not to underestimate this kid. If the game is close down the stretch, Case will likely come up with a big pay or two. He most definately will not give the game away - the Chiefs will have to take it.

He is very instinctive. He MAKES things happen. He extends plays. Very dangerous.

The team has wanted him to start since week 1. They're going to rally around him. Expect a heavy dose of Arian Foster / Ben Tate and then Keenum will go for the KILL with play-action and bootleg passes. He is very smart and won't force things.

I have never seen a QB look more shell shocked than Pryor did last week. He probably has PTSD. Keenum is so fucked.

Watching some of the youtube vids on Keenum, Texans fans think this guy is the best QB on the planet.

Didn't we have a lot of people on this forum who thought that about a certain QB a couple years ago? :hmmm:

Either way, reality is gonna hit them like a ton of bricks. I don't care if he's good or not, no QB is done squat against this defense.

We should just punt on first down to save JC from his blisters and give our defense extra chances to score off of Keenum.

Keenum is really their only option.

If they start Yates and he's destroyed, they'd be forced to put Keenum in the game, without prepping him as the starter.

This way, if he sucks, they can bring in a guy with some experience.

How many sacks we get is mostly on the OL; I'm wondering how many INT's we'll get. Once this guy gets Poed, Hali'ed and Houstoned a few times, in his first trip to the big time, I have a feeling he's going to start throwing picks left and right. And, of course, our guys will show him absolutely no mercy.

I'd set the over/under at 3, and that may be overly conservative.

Here in Houston, news of his start is generating excitement. After 5 weeks of Schaub suckitude, a change was sorely needed. He may very well fail but at least they rolled the dice and gave the fans here hope.

Last year this development would have generated moans and groans and a general gnashing of teeth.

Sure the Texans have a strong defense.

So what.

This is the new Chiefs. The ones that eat opponents and spit out their bones.

Not only will KC do the same to Casey, it is doubtful he will finish the game.

He'll make a couple of throws.

He'll scramble a couple of times.

If he's lucky, he may even score.

But it won't continue. He won't survive. Come Sunday, we celebrate. Come Sunday we bring the pain to maim and murder.

Welcome to Kansas City Casey. The place where Ryan Leaf started his first road game. Where Tyrell Pryor was just sacked ten times. Where first-time starting QBs come to die.

Ladies and gentlemen. Boys and girls.

Dying time is here.

KILL! KILL! KILL!

I have a good feeling about this game. They have a good defense, it might be low scoring, but how many UDFA players are going to step in and win a game like this?

I mean, for comparison's sake, if we were on the road at Denver and Bray were starting, would we expect to win that? No matter what you think of Bray, no.

I think it's going to be a good day.

The only real consideration is can their defense shut down Alex and Co.? I think yes - he does terrible against strong defense so it won't surprise me if offense generates 6-13 points.

That said, it won't surprise me to see the D/ST score two TDs and the Texans fail to score a TD.

I hear ya but Case Kenum can play. He's better than Tyler Bray. The Chiefs sould not underestimate him. He doesn't make many mistakes. Expect a heavy dose of Arian Foster / Ben Tate then the killer play-action. DB's better be ready for it because it's coming. He'll roll out on a bootleg and pass on the run and he is deadly accurate when he does it. The team has wanted this for a long time. They will rally around him. The Texans have a good "D" and running game. Throw in a QB that does not make mistakes and you've got a tight ball game coming to Arrowhead on Sunday.
