They're about 15-20% of the population. Not that it matters.

The author focuses only on the nfl and doesn't address football at other levels. The lead attorney for the players told Real Sports they got all they could in large part because they couldn't pin all the liability on the nfl, since it only comprised a minority share of their football days.

Yeah but there were definitely some shenanigans pulled by the NFL. ESPN was supposed to air it (and helped produce it) but pulled the plug at the last minute.

Conflict of interest for ESPN? No. Just more proof that they're in the pockets of those who provide product to their highest viewership and ad dollars.

We didnt have football in my high school. My Junior year we won the state fencing tourney and that was pretty amazing. No one got injured but the cost to bus the team to Chicago was a big deal.

The smartest thing the nfl did was get their franchises so knee deep in public financing that the municipalities themselves have a vested interest keeping football around. They can't afford to cover these stadium debt obligations out of their general fund.

The only way it remotely becomes a possibility is if people start dying on the football field. I don't think that would stop the NFL but it would be a PR nightmare that might actually do damage to the game of football.

There may definitely be more rule changes in the future though... things like getting rid of kickoffs, etc. Goodell was floating that stuff out there for a reason. Maybe the game is officiated a bit differently 10 years from now.

NFL players are heavily compensated for what they put their bodies through. Could the NFL do more when it comes to head injuries? Yes, but lets not pretend that this is the roman coliseum. The players are there at their own discretion. No one is making them stay.

This is the typical liberal talking point. "It's evil! Let's ban it!" Nothing more than big government shills who think the best way to deal with things is by manipulating the way the free market works.

Let the people decide if the NFL should exist or not by allowing people to make up their own minds about it. Don't like the NFL? DON'T WATCH IT! Don't partake in it in any way...and like with anything, if enough people adopt this approach, the NFL will eventually cease to exist.

Scamming taxpayers? I think the NFL actually helps the taxpayers by creating more jobs, which results in more revenue for everybody. Having an NFL stadium in your city is actually quite beneficial for the locals.

No, but it is inaccurate to say "The LA Times thinks this", when it is one author on the LA Times. They have numerous, and often conflicting opinions, in every newspaper that don't necessarily reflect the opinion of the newspaper. A lot of people don't understand what the Op-Ed page is.

I see a lot of people on political forums outraged at a newspaper over opinion pieces, as if they all reflect the thinking of the newspaper. But newspapers usually have both liberal and conservative opinion pieces, for example. They don't really mean anything except that one writer believes it, and that the newspaper allows many opinions on its Op-Ed page.

I was just curious why he didn't address all football.

Because the NFL actively and knowingly took part in a campaign to lie to their players to the detriment of their long term health?

I've been saying this for a long time... the NFL knew the problems concussions caused 30 years ago. They knowingly suppressed this information from the players. Players should have been made aware of it.

Christ, I did a freaking report about this in 1998 when I was still in high school. What the neurological community said about concussions was 180 degrees from what the NFL was feeding it's players.

WhiteWhale
10-18-2013, 10:10 AM
how many times before these players realize, you lead with your head it is going to mess you up?

How many times before fans realize that it's not the 'big hit' concussions that cause long term damage, but the multiple 'walking concussions' suffered by linemen in nearly every game that have no symptoms but still cause damage to the brain?

Playing properly in the trenches is far more dangerous in terms of long term head trauma than smashing your head into a WR once and a while.

You're stupid.

The NFL lied to the players for 30 years about the risks of their profession. They were not ignorant like you were about the problems it caused. They're a source of the wide-spread ignorance.

I agree with your premise here, but you have to acknowledge the fact that the NFL was forcing them to make decisions with intentionally deceptive information.

Not only do I not know a single person that supports the employees at this point I don't even know somebody that knows somebody that supports them. In general, I've noticed that I have very little affinity for people who like football. I find them to be beer-swilling, nacho-gobbling cro-magnon proletariat types. They lust for "killer hits." They swill and gutturally exhort their team to victory. Ridiculously, with nacho cheese dripping from their soul patches, they strut around their living rooms high-fiving each other shouting "THAT'S what I'm talking about! Do you feel me?"
Sometimes they paint their faces. They are an amusing and disturbing spectacle!
