Have an opportunity to buy farm raised (organic) 1/2 or whole hog that I'll have to have butchered myself. Price seems a bit high to me.

Looking for local pricing or what a hog goes for at present...

as soon as hog farmer gets his hands free, he'll let you know. maybe mohillbilly, or hcf?

i'm not sure of prices for fat hogs. I've got a friend that usually trades me one that's ruptured or something once a year. just pay for butchering/smoking/etc.

gotta be a place on the net that would give daily prices in your area?

good luck,

Organic is kinda of a loose term. Heritage breed maybe? No corn soy or antibiotics?

Processed price or live weight?

Breed of hog?

Sometimes the processing price is outta control.

All butchers are not the same.

And sometimes you need to grab a sharp knife & a you tube video & take matters into your own hands

Most people don't sell 'on the hoof' or liveweight for hogs and it makes me super suspicious but if its truly organic I would think anywhere from $1/lb (on the cheap side) to $2/lb Processing would be in addition to these prices

Processing depending on size, speciality cuts, curing, ect. Is around 120$

Only "farm slop." Veggies/meat raised on farm fed to the hogs.

Processed price or live weight?

I'd assume after kill but before the butcher. Lbs depend on what I want.

Breed of hog?

No idea.

Man I'd just get a market hog off Craigslist or some other rag and pay 50-60 c a point live weight.
This time a year is a good time cause guys have fed out spring hogs and don't wanna overwinter. A lot of the time they will haul to the but her you want if its within reason. Nadlers, winters, Stoney ridge, ect.

I'm offered $250 a 1/2 hog without it being butchered (I have one lined up.)

Right now live hog prices are .82 per pound.
Processing should cost .50 - .60 per pound.
A hog will yield around 50% carcass weight as compare to live weight
here is an excellent resource for what cuts to expect for pork and beef

Do you mean you have offered that? Respectfully, run sir run !
We usually sell them live for $1.00 per pound delivered to the butcher.
The customer pays the butcher and tells the butcher how they want items cut and packaged.

a half that's processed is around 60#.

So by my guess you're gonna pay 5.33 a pound.

Live weight and, on the hoof, refers to the weight of the animal pre kill.

One more note...

Now that Sams and Walmart have realized that Americans want higher quality meat products you can often purchase cuts cheaper than you can buy live and pay for processing with the same quality.

In addition you often end up using freezer space for large cuts you will not use of months or years and then it gets freezer burned.

I like the term organic or farm raised, its a niche, but we raise pigs on the farm and use the same medicated feed and drugs to treat sicks as Large corporate farms do.

I guess in summary I am just saying... don't get took just because your buying the Whole hog (or half) ;)
