It's only been a few weeks, sure. But you've already got some rookies popping off the screen. And other sucking the big one (like a certain first overall pick).

Who did you accurately nail? And who, so far, has made you look like a Direckshun-scale asshole moron?

Kiko Alonso of Buffalo Bills tops list of best rookies

We devoted a segment of Wednesday's Around The League Podcast to a discussion of the NFL's most impressive and most disappointing rookies. Below is our list of the first-year players making the biggest impact through six weeks of the 2013 season.

1. Kiko Alonso, Buffalo Bills linebacker: The No. 46 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft leads the NFL in tackles (66) and interceptions (4). Although Alonso can thank a generous hometown scorer for the inflated tackles total, he's still been a difference-maker in Mike Pettine's defense.

2. Sheldon Richardson, New York Jets defensive end: Damon "Big Snacks" Harrison has been a mainstay in our "Making the Leap" series, but Richardson has been nearly as dominant against the run while adding a pass rushing element. The Jets' star-studded defensive line is holding opponents to a league-low 3.0 yards per carry.

3. Giovani Bernard, Cincinnati Bengals running back: Jay Gruden's offense finally has a second playmaker to complement A.J. Green. No rookie is within 100 yards of Bernard's 438 yards from scrimmage. His ankle-breaking 20-yard touchdown against the Bills looked like a clip from a Barry Sanders highlight video.

4. Eddie Lacy, Green Bay Packers running back: Lacy is the first Packers rookie since John Brockington in 1971 to rush for at least 99 yards in back-to-back games. With Randall Cobb out at least eight weeks and James Jones nursing a PCL sprain, Lacy could be the focal point of the offense in a rejuvenated ground attack.

5. Tyrann Mathieu, Arizona Cardinals defensive back: The steal of the NFL draft, Mathieu has been an every-down asset as a slot corner, outside cornerback and deep safety. We knew about his natural playmaking instincts, but his tackling ability and run support have been just as impressive, drawing comparisons to former Vikings Pro Bowler Antoine Winfield.

6. Star Lotulelei, Carolina Panthers defensive tackle: Every couple of games, Carolina's defense just slaps an offense around. Lotulelei has been instrumental in the improved run defense, shutting down the interior.

7. Eric Reid, San Francisco 49ers safety: It's not hyperbole to suggest that Reid is a playmaking upgrade on Dashon Goldson, a first-team All-Pro in 2012. The first-rounder's range jumps off the screen on Game Rewind.

8. Keenan Allen, San Diego Chargers wide receiver: We've pointed out Allen's emergence as Philip Rivers' go-to receiver in back-to-back prime time games the past two weeks. A first-round talent who slid to the third, Allen is a complete receiver playing with a veteran's savvy.

9. Kyle Long, Chicago Bears guard: Jay Cutler is off to the best start of his career in no small part because of the upgraded offensive line. Long already has the look of a perennial Pro Bowl selection.

10. Larry Warford, Detroit Lions guard: Marc Sessler has outlined Warford's role in Reggie Bush's success. The third-rounder has also exceeded expectations in pass protection, keeping Matthew Stafford clean in the pocket.

11. Kenny Vaccaro, New Orleans Saints safety: Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is asking a lot of the No. 15 overall pick, lining him up as a deep safety, an in-the-box safety, a nickel back in the slot, a cornerback on the outside, an inside linebacker and an outside linebacker. Vaccaro has been one of most important players on a defense that has gone from overly generous to downright stingy.

12. Marcus Cooper, Kansas City Chiefs cornerback: If Mathieu was the steal of the draft, then Cooper is the steal of the waiver wire. Claimed from the 49ers after final cuts, the seventh-rounder has been sticky in coverage while turning in momentum-changing interceptions in back-to-back games.

13. Andre Ellington, Arizona Cardinals running back: The sixth-rounder has been a big-play machine, picking up a first down 19 times on 43 touches -- good for a 44 percent conversion rate. For comparison's sake, Adrian Peterson and LeSean McCoy move the chains less than 30 percent of the time.

14. Travis Frederick, Dallas Cowboys center: An offensive line that was expected to be a weakness has instead been one of the NFL's strongest thus far. Frederick's steadily improving play is a big reason for the turnaround up front.

15. Alec Ogletree, St. Louis Rams linebacker: Ogletree remains a work in progress, taking Magellan-like routes to the ball and missing too many tackles. His knack for big plays has been evident going back to the preseason, though.

Honorable mention: Robert Woods, DeAndre Hopkins, Ziggy Ansah, David Bakhtiari, Barkevious Mingo, Corey Lemonier, D.J. Fluker, Zac Stacy, Jordan Reed, Joseph Fauria, Akeem Spence, Kawann Short

Biggest rookie disappointments: Tavon Austin, Eric Fisher, Luke Joeckel, Montee Ball, Dee Milliner, Justin Pugh, Darius Slay, Manti Te'o, Arthur Brown

I'm happy to say nobody beat the Lotulelei drum harder than I did during draft season. All my draft forum brethren can attest to that.

I also loved Joeckel, though. So.

I liked Sheldon, Vaccaro and Honeybadger. I was kind of sad we didn't pick up Honeybadger but Marcus Cooper has made me forget all about that.

I will admit I never even heard of Marcus Cooper before he showed up and started owning.

As for guys I liked, that haven't done as well, the only two I can say are Fisher and Geno.

Fisher needs to get his shit together, and I think he can. Same goes for Geno.

But yeah, Richardson would make this defense epic

What?

Ansah, Mingo, Richardson, Lotulelei, Vaccaro, Manuel, Reid, Jones, Long, Eifert, Floyd, Hopkins, Patterson, Ogletree, have all looked quite good (I haven't seen others like Williams, Werner, Jones, etc) It looks like a typical first round class to me.

And Geno Smith.

And Tyler Wilson.

But apparently wrong about everyone else, especially Lotuleilei.

I thought this was an underwhelming draft all together with maybe a few surprises mixed in.

I thought Geno Smith should have been 1.1 pick and sky the limit for him. Still think that way.

Tavon Austin. I thought he was perfect for Fisher's team and exactly what Bradford needed. Not the case so far. Another guy I thought would help somebody was the QB Wilson to the Raiders. That one really fell apart.

I hope he's not Trezelle Jenkins Part II. He definitely needs to add some strength. His arms look pretty skinny for a lineman.

The reason I am not writing him off just yet is because of how well D Poe is playing in his second year and so that is the only reason I have any hope Fisher can do the same. If he puts on a strong frame then maybe he will work out but right now I am in doubt. I thought Eric Fisher was only slightly better than Luke Joekel but both bust.

There's absolutely no reason to write Fisher off, period. It's waaaay too early.

The major issues I've noticed, watching the film: he's playing too high, he's getting baited by defenders, and he's screwing up his blocking assignments too frequently. Also, he's playing soft at times, and anxious at others (i.e. the false starts).

Experience will help almost all of that: he'll figure out the baiting, as well as the blocking assignments, and hopefully his anxiousness subsides. He's got some technique to fix, and that'll come with coaching.

The occasions of him playing soft are concerning. But that wasn't his style in college, so hopefully that ship rights itself.

We knew, from day one, that Fisher was a project. I expected him to be farther along than he is now, but we knew he was a project.

I don't know how good he'll be, but he's got plenty of time to become a really good LT.

we shared the same views there. in our defense, playing RT isn't anything like playing LT, which is something neither of us claimed Joeckel would play well. so there's that.

this draft class has been horrible, for the most part.

I got a lot of shit for wanting to draft Tyrann Mathieu.

I didn't think he'd go as high as he did....I was wanting to take a flyer with a 5th rd pick or later. Instead he went in the 3rd and he's playing his ass off.

In Sandbox I took Kiko Alonso and Akeem Spence (both leagues). I also had all these guys on my draft board at one point or another: Eddie Lacy, Eric Reid, Kyle Long, Larry Warford, and Alec Ogletree.

On the downside, I drafted Darius Slay in both leagues.

DaneMcCloud
10-19-2013, 08:30 PM
Right:

Geno Smith: He teases with his talent then follows it up with dumb shit, just like in college.

Manti Te'o: Said in October 2012 he'd be lucky to run a 4.8. Said he sucks. He sucks.

Kiko Alonso: Liked him a lot. Not as much as he's performed.

Chance Warmack: I had an argument with a new age draftabulator in the draft forum about him. He'd sure look better next to Albert then Allen and at this point, would be a better choice than Fisher, for sure.

E.J. Manuel: Liked him with a high second. High character, ideal size, plus arm strength. Needs to get healthy.

Wrong:

Tavon Austin: I thought he'd be a game changer. Az Hakim meets Dante Hall. So far, he's JAG.

Matt Barkley: Based on his pre-2012 performances, I thought he'd be NFL ready. IMO, Bray has more NFL upside.

Kenny Vacarro: Missed on him. Should have known better. Would have made this defense even better.

I drafted Ziggy Ansah and Alec Ogletree with my first two picks in cdcox's Sandbox Simulations so I'm feeling pretty good about that.

I also had Kiko Alonso and Giovanni Bernard on my board at one point.

I think we had the draft after a couple preseason games though so I can't really claim that I'm some type of draft guru.
