Arrowhead Stadium: home of the…Chiefs?

Posted on: 11:38 pm, October 19, 2013, by Gia Vang

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A true sea of red fan knows how the national anthem at Arrowhead Stadium ends, with the home of the “Chiefs,” not “brave.”
But this Chiefs tradition dating back to the 90′s, could be going back to what it originally is if a Facebook group called “Arrowhead, Home of The Brave,” has anything to do with it.

“We just felt that the times like they are now, things have changed since 9/11 and ‘brave’ extends past our military and past our first responders,” John, a page administrator, said.

“John” wants to remain anonymous because he said this isn’t about him. He said it’s about the brave people in this country today, not just military and first responders, but those fighting other tremendous causes.

“I just know that me and some of my friends, we feel good to get this off our chest and it’s creating some good discussion online,” John said.

Fans are chiming in on the Facebook page. One person writing, “Just sing brave … that’s the way it was written.” Others writing, “I don’t see the harm in yelling “chiefs” … it’s something that enhances the game day experience …”
Fans Fox 4 spoke to on the streets were split also.

“I don’t agree with it. I think it’s a Chiefs tradition. I think it should stay that way,” Sean Olson said.

“I don’t think it’s any disrespect to the service people. It’s just, I think it’s more to help kick start the football game for the Chiefs fans,” Skip Zey, a Chiefs fan said.

But John said one of the problems for him, is the song is kick starting games at other venues like Kauffman and Sporting Park. John said it waters down the meaning and others think, it is time to make this move. Johnna Schernikau said she used to say “chiefs” but not anymore. Why?

“Age, maybe just getting older and you just kind of appreciate what your service people do for you,” Schernikau said.

Arrowhead, Home of The Brave has gotten more than 600 likes on Facebook. John said they started the page last Sunday. He said he knows he probably won’t change the minds of 80,000 fans, but he is writing a letter to the Chiefs organization next week, anyway.

Yeah, agree with all that. I do think it's a tradition that does a nice job of letting opposing teams and fans know that this isn't just any stadium. I'd imagine that's pretty jarring for someone who's never played in Arrowhead before.

I can't say I disagree with his sentiment but I think it's a hopeless cause. But like I said earlier, it would be nice if people didn't use the chant at unrelated sporting events because it takes something slightly disrespectful and becomes very disrespectful, IMO.

...and, I'm as proud of a Veteran as you'll find.

So, phuckn' tired of all the PC folks. This is our tradition, don't like, stay home.

BTW...I'm also a vet and feel that whoever changed it to "Home of the Chiefs" at Arrowhead was clever to use the NA, a song that encompasses the solidarity and sacrifices of a nation, and apply that to a sports venue on a smaller scale and achieve the solidarity that it was originally intended to achieve in the first place.

In no way is it a slap or a disgrace to anyone. Those who don't feel the power of unity has missed the intent completely and are mindless sheep. If you need a cause to support, then find out why we are sending money and support to other countries rather than helping those at home. Go work in a soup kitchen or volunteer to mentor kids. I think you will find those more gratifying and worthy causes.

Nah

America really is home of the Chiefs. The Chiefs play in America. The Chiefs are brave, so it is still like saying home of the brave.

Additionally, America is also home of the cowards. People who are too chicken shit to change one word of a poem written two hundred years ago out of some misguided sense of nationalism toward a nation that 50% of the people hate 50% of the time, depending on what political party is in the white house.

It is also Home of the Not Brave All the Time, but When the Moment Arises, Able to Fight Through Their Fear and Tough it Out.

But that ruins the rhythm of the line.

Mostly, though, America is home of the Americans. Moreso than "the brave," because that implies that "the brave" are a collective group who share the same qualities throughout. So, if a brave person lives in Greece, then they are part of the collective "Brave (group)" and their home is America.

Of course, you could also just settle down and realize that the national anthem is about as legitimate a source of pride as having the sports team from my area beat the sports team from your area.

This is retarded.

Issues of concerns to Veterans:

1) Backlog of VA claims takes years

2) 22 military veterans commit suicide every day

3) High unemployment among veterans

4) Identification of traumatic brain injuries and PTSD

5) Draw-down forcing career veterans out of the military

6) Continued multiple deployments

897) Use of National Anthem at sporting events

Thanks for all you do looking out for Veterans, 'John'.

Having volunteered and interned at the VA was an experience of a lifetime, and the people I met and time spent with them, stories shared has shaped and touched my life immensely.

Yes, free speech is a founding principle of this country. No, it has nothing to do with this situation. Yes, you need to go back to 8th grade and pay attention in American History class this time.

You are 100% correct

It has absolutely nothing to do with free speech

Mandatory rote recitation of a song in it's entirety, without exception and without deviation IS free speech?

Not personally. But when the govt makes an unconstitutional act constitutional for it's own gain, then it becomes a govt of tyranny.

And that's all I'm going to say to keep this from being thrown into DC.

America would technically still be home to the 'Chiefs' if our 'brave' individuals didn't bring guns to a tomahawk fight.
