No, he's not contributing, but if someone could show me that he's simply unable to get open, then sure, time to consider some options. But I just don't think Alex's game includes longer passes to someone like Bowe.

I'm dead serious.

Eventually if you're going to be a Championship level franchise you've got to make statements regarding who is important to your success and who is not.

Dexter McCluster has become vital to the offense the Chiefs run. Does Bowe help as a distraction? Of course.

But is he worth the headache with contributing absolutely nothing? Well..that's what the poll is for.

No way. Dude is a great asset to the run game at the very least. Pederson/Reid need to be lining Bowe up in the slot, or even at TE. He's hampered by his QB's inefficiency throwing outside the numbers.

On any other team in the league with a legit passing QB, Bowe would be putting up some monstrous numbers.

Im really wondering why Bowe didn't just cut and run in FA when he had the chance. He knew the QB situation for KC has always been a shit show. He could've gone somewhere that had a guy that could get him the football.

Also his signing bonus would accelerate and we'd end up with less cap room than if we kept him.

I've never been his biggest fan, but the guy does have some skills and can catch the ball. If Alex can't throw more than 15 yards to reach where Bowe is running, then they should at least try some different routes to get him some targets.

Bowe's not great at separating from CBs, but he's more than capable of positioning his body to make catches. Why would you want to cut such a player? If you're not happy with his game on the outside, or you just don't think it meshes with the current QB or system, get him in motion going towards the slot and let him take advantage of his size on quick slants and ins.

This is a candidate for dipshit thread of the decade.

The guy was consistently open today. It was sickening. Sure, a few times Alex was under pressure. Other times it was painfully obvious that he had checked the ball down before it was even snapped...he wasn't even looking at Dwayne. If they aren't going to throw it to him when he's open downfield, then just let him run short crossing patterns. They guy is a solid YAC receiver.

You don't cut your 2nd best offensive player. You figure out how to get him the ball.

Seriously though, through 8 games Bowe has 300 yards and 2 TD. Last year he only had 800 yards and 3 TD.

It's not unfair to ask what's going on with him, especially since he just got paid $56 million.

If you actually watched the games, then you wouldn't have to ask.

He's constantly being doubled.

The O-line can't block long enough for Bowe to get separation.

The conservative game plans include lots of screens, flares, and not much deep stuff (to compensate for lack of an O-line??)

yeah, anyone who wants to cut Bowe is a moron.

No, don't get it twisted.

Would Fitz or Megatron put up better numbers in this offense??

Not unless the O-line can block better.

Fisher may indeed prove himself to be a great football player...someday.

that day is not coming this year...the line, and therefore the team, would be better served by not playing Fisher as much in the short term.

He's gonna get Smth hurt, and all these ignorant dipshits calling for Daniel or Bray will choke on their jagged words

I get the frustration. This guy has been a consistent 1000 yard guy for us, and this year nada. But I'd say there's more going on here than just Bowe. As has been stated, he's a monster blocker, and he's not being targeted. I'd be more pissed at scheme\QB play than Bowe. Last week the first 4 passes went to Bowe IIRC. I think it just depends on the scheme and the defense. Alex is not going to take any chances with the ball...

Bowe is doing a lot of things besides catching passes. He is doing a great job of blocking downfield. He is taking up double teams. I think he's been hurt most of the year so the numbers are down, but numbers don't always tell the whole story.

The funny thing is that there is an argument you could try to make that this should be at least considered (well not this exact thing, but a variation of it).

The dinglefuck Beaker just isn't smart enough to make said argument.

Bowe's 2014 and 2015 salaries are completely guaranteed by the 3rd day of the 2014 league year. That locks us into Bowe through the 2015 season.

If you don't believe he's going to be part of that plan, you absolutely have to make the move before the 2014 league year starts. And really, it's moderately defensible. But it's going to hurt like a sonofabitch to do it. Not only do you get the $12 million of his signing bonus accelerated immediately onto the cap, but $4.75 million of his 2014 salary is guaranteed and would still count as dead money as well.

So you'd be looking at a cap hit of nearly $17 million. You'd pay $8 million more against your cap to be rid of Bowe than you would to keep him around. But you'd be doing it with an eye on freeing up significant cap space for 2015 (when he has a $14 million cap figure that's completely guaranteed).

Alternatively, you trade him and the guaranteed salary goes with him. And with the acquiring team not having to worry about his signing bonus figure hitting the cap, he'd absolutely have value. At that point you take a $3 million (ish) cap hit in 2014 to save a shitload of cap space in 2015 and get a nominal asset (probably about a 3rd rounder) in return.

It's not a completely insane idea. I don't think I'd do it because Bowe's still a great teammate, a loyal Chief, a ferocious downfield blocker and still a skilled player. But there's a discussion that needs to be had internally before that 2015 salary is guaranteed.

Or we could just throw the ball to him more.

Sure.

But I think you have to really start to wonder if he's the right fit for the WCO. Smith's not getting him the ball, there's no question. Smith needs to try to get him the ball more often (though this week is an outlier; Bowe was obviously dinged out there - I think he was a gameplanned decoy).

But Bowe wasn't getting separation out there prior to this week. I know, 'throw it to him anyway' and to some degree that's true. But at $20 million over the 2014/2015 seasons, I'd like to think you'll get more than a possession WR for your efforts.

Bowe's just not terribly quick; never has been. His routes aren't terribly precise; never have been. His skills allow him to be a standout WR in several different systems, but it doesn't appear like they fit this system terribly well.

It's really not an easy question. I know a lot of folks act like it is, but it's a matter of allocating resources. For instance, lets say we switched to a 4-3 defense that made Hali go back to being the middling DE4 he was before the 3-4 switch - would people still be excited about his cap hit?

We just made a similar switch but on offense. We paid Bowe his '3-4 OLB' performance but our offense doesn't use him that well. His strengths just don't fit it that precisely.

Yes, Smith needs to do a better job getting him the ball. But even if he does, this system isn't designed for galloping, physical WRs that use their strength instead of quickness or precision to produce yards. He'll be better if Smith uses him more, but he won't be great. And frankly, he's not been great this year when Smith has tried to get him the ball (as was the case vs. Houston).

An off-season trade before the salary is guaranteed is a conversation worth having. Bray's not going to be the panacea that suddenly makes Bowe a great fit in the WCO.

Maybe they can have Alex look to Bowe as the first read more often on a dozen 9 routes per game? Safety plays over the top? Alex goes to his 2nd/3rd read underneath. The playside S doesn't play over the top, lob it up and let Bowe go up and get it.

Obviously the money would hit the Chiefs bad but this guy simply does not contribute.

A legit franchise would simply move on.

He had a groin "tweak" and was a game time descision.

So the Chiefs are not a legit franchise now at 8-0... Biggest turn around in NFL history, undefeated and in first place with young talent on both sides of the ball and one of the best coaching staffs, greatest fans- becasue Bowe was playing hurt and only contributed on blocking???

Our FO paying 17 million dollars to find out Bowe isn't a good fit for the WCO concerns me much more than his lack of production. I have to believe it's a comfort thing with Smith in how much time he has to throw along with Bowe realizing that he has to work harder at separating for this particular QB. Maybe they should run more routes to Bowe in the middle of the field where Smith seems to be more comfortable.

Bowe is being interviewed on 810 right now.

He's speaking about how great Andy Reid is and why players play so hard for him.
He's talking now also about how great it feels to block for his runners when he's not getting the ball and he has no problem do that.
He says "it's not about stats, it's about winning in this league and that's all that matters"
"I'm just out there playing football and having fun with the guys"

Iowanian
10-28-2013, 09:55 AM
Bowe says at this point in his career all he wants to do is win and he doesn't care about his stats. He's been paid for what he has done and he's still capable of doing those same things.

Please do. The 49ers could use him. I would love to see Bowe catching passes from Kaepernick. He would go right back to 1000 yard season status.D. Bowe for V. Davis then. Straight up.

Discussing Denver, he said players are talking about it and "getting their chips in a row"....
He said he didn't care if he blocked every play or went 10/150 as long as they beat Denver.

He's also talking about the Bowe foundation, and he's selling his Charger to raise money.
The cause his foundation supports is Grandparents raising grand children.

Pretty impressive interview.

Exactly. Bowe is contributing to the offensive scheme. Someone has to block downfield when we run the middle screens. This offense isn't flashy but it is effective. For the most part it is a mundane game of field position and ball control. However, the tempo does pick up if we are playing from behind or it is a close game.

Ace Gunner
10-28-2013, 10:42 AM
when he was on 610 earlier he talked about a lot of the same things, but at one point he answered a question with "when we need a big play that's when the ball goes to me" and then abruptly ended. I kind of thought he was saying that the offense is still a work in progress, but his absence within the pass game is there when they need it. I think that is a good way to put Bowe's role so far.

hell, he's the best blocker on this team :)

Seriously though, through 8 games Bowe has 300 yards and 2 TD. Last year he only had 800 yards and 3 TD.

It's not unfair to ask what's going on with him, especially since he just got paid $56 million.

We just desperately need another option in the passing game. Be it a TE or WR. That will help Bowe a lot. He can help himself by securing catches, but that might be too much to hope for at this point. He is what he is, you know?

crossbow
12-25-2013, 03:13 PM
Sure, might as well cut the best Wide Receiver on the team and eat tons of cap space for doing so. Why wait for something better to come along when you can downgrade your roster right away?

Why is there so much hate for this player? He does what his coaches ask him to do and he doesn't complain in public about how the team is run.

Bl00dyBizkitz

I think Bowe is dumb as bricks, cannot run a decent route, or fight for the ball. Problem is, cutting him kills our cap space which is even worse. Keep him on the team and hope he shows up one year. That's all I can say.

This is partly it. The apparent outrage is that while Bowe CAN do a heck of a lot on the field to get KC where it wants to be.. he doesn't seem all that interested in giving his all to do that. I suspect that had Bowe been in a contract year this season, we would be seeing.. a different Bowe.

After getting paid, I think he is simply coasting and not being the best he can be. He can run out a few yards and use strength to muscle out defenders for the run game. That much isn't terribly troublesome for him..... but running his max speed and making sharp cuts? attacking the football and extending out instead of waiting for it? Bowe is often disinterested.

6. all accounts I've heard are that he's LAZY in practice. you don't HAVE to believe that...
7. dude tries to trap the ball with his chest as opposed to catching it in his hands (which may be ok, as he has terrible hands), and he like to try to one-hand a lot of em too, like he thinks he's Cris Carter or something.
